I had the same thought, especially since we play back-to-back in the stream. I think it's equally interesting given how different the lyrical content is. I like them both, though.

Wait, maybe it's the same story from two points of view, I hadn't thought of my song that way, but it could work. :-)

I'm still here too! *waves a little hentai kitty death flag* though, maybe i shouldn't bring attention to that. *cough*

I thought you sounded awesome this week, c hack. Alot better production than the last song of yours I listened to many a year ago.

but, yes.. scathing, but hopefully constructive reviews later when i get the chance. I've listened to everyone though. Off the top of my head I also liked Melvin, the anchors, the bewells, caravan ray (was also awesome this week), carpet burn, closest dark, doorite, saint cale... and i'm getting confused. others!!

Gotta say, pretty much every DJ BiggusDickus review is right on. Man, way too many submissions to review individually since I'm not in this fight (and I'm not that interested), but I'm digging:

BLT (shoulda won last time...that was a good song...decent tune this time)
Melvin (solid)
PIGPen (good sound, needs a little more song)
Shotpounder (pretty damn good)
Darkest Daves (man, don't hear a lot of this anymore...good job, I'm sad now)
Carpetburn (solid)
Klownhole (much improved...)

God damn, think I might have to vote for Klownhole.

No shit, I repeated that song 3 or 4 times in a row on my ipod today. I just wanted to hear him say, "I'm off to Pango Pango, where bulldogs all wear pants" f**king CLASSIC!

Pussies that don't review everyone are......well you know......pussies.

5900-N5 : Not my style but a very interesting production. The vocals especially are compelling from a “How do they do that?” standpoint. After the initial fascination wears off though (at less than a minute) I’m pretty bored by this. A glance at the lyrics has me wondering WTF? Please don’t take that as a need to respond. I REALLY don’t want to know.

Billy's Little Trip : Rocking intro, and the formula works for me. Hit them in the face, get into your story, tell it and leave. And don’t forget to kick your amp over in the direction of the dumbstruck asshole sitting on his hands. If he gives you any shit about it, just leap off of the stage, kick his ass and let the last words out of your mouth to him be “IT-COULD-HAVE-BEEN-WORSE!”. Emphasize each word by pounding his head on the beer soaked floor.

Caravan Ray : Someone’s liking the new bass they bought. Sounds great man. My main issue with your song is the overuse of reverberation and effects in general. I just think it’s a little too much and unnecessary, you’re a better vocalist than needs to be hidden behind it. The lyrics are darker than what I would expect from a guy who just started a new job that he seems happy about, maybe this tale comes from your previous line of work. Finally, as flattered as I am that you’re my friend and that you understand me, I won’t be sending you any money. Your silly mind control tricks won’t work on me Jedi Ray. Save them for the kids who didn’t grow up listening to Pink Floyd.

Carpetburn : Good intro and chord progression sets the song off on the right path. From there the vocals and continuing complexity of the arrangement adds positively to the entire piece. Very solid performances throughout and a good story line combined with professional sounding recording make this a very easy and fun listen.

Closest Dark Vepun ind. : Cool instrumentation, I love the horns and the tremolo guitar. The violins are slightly over the top, but I can live with them. This has a ‘60’s James Bond theme kind of feel to it, which in my mind garners you extra points. The lyrics and vocals are spot on for the genre. The recording is well done, especially considering the complexity of the instrumentation.

DJ Big Fanny (Dick) : This has absolutely no redeeming quality. None, zilch, zero. And no reference to the title whatsoever. None, zilch, zero. And your name has no reference to anything in your life. None, zilch, zero. As in you don’t have a big dick and you ain’t getting no big fanny. None, zilch, zero.

Dangerous Croutons : This is so far removed from anything I would choose to listen to, I can’t really say anything about it. It’s just not a song, a style or genre that moves me or inspires me to write anything more than the 41 previous words I just typed.

DooRite + Rankenstein : Cut and paste time. This is so far removed from anything I would choose to listen to, I can’t really say anything about it. It’s just not a song that moves me or inspires me to write anything you might like to read.

Eddie Lance : I like the fact that you used a kid to do some of the reading. I like some of the piano. The crickets are annoying. This isn’t a song in my book. And the “joke” is so obvious from the start it’s pathetic. Clicking next in the time it took me to type this.

Fine Tuvan Dining : Maybe I’m getting tired but I’m just not in the mood for some Tiny Tim right now. It’s not completely lacking qualities to like, I just can’t seem to find any of them. I would like the last 2:24 of my life back.

Flvxxvm Forvm : 3 chord blues / rock combined with weak vocals and lyrics is not what the Dr. ordered. Then there’s the religious reference (The day of judgement blah, blah, blah….) that I could have lived without. NEXT!

Hoosier Daddy : Me. Go figure, Dan-O From Five-O lives in Indiana. And one stupid joke in the body of my e-mail will most likely preserve my 25% win record, and 4 entry status. Oh well can’t have it both ways. What can I say, this song is a departure of sorts for me. It is my first entry where I actually am playing ALL of the instruments including the drums. A very shaky drum part, but drums none the less. And all REAL instruments played by a REAL musician. So I got that going for me. And the whole Dalai Lama thing, but that’s another story. Big hitter the Lama.

Klownhole : Holy Christ! The rock! The passion! This is the shit! I normally am not in for true head banging stuff, but this brings it so solid at the start that it’s hard not to like it. Even when you break it down in the middle (love the organ) this song is still just flat out rockin’. I’m not sure I caught the title in there. I’ll have to go back and listen again after my ears stop bleeding.

MC Eric B : Casio meets no talent or production skills. Congratulations, I’m sure you’ll be happy together. Next.

Masterhyde : I was going to cut and paste the line about how this isn’t my thing and I didn’t have anything good to say about this, but I couldn’t. Sorry Masterhyde, I’ve listened to this song at least 3 times now and I just have to say, this is one of the worst rap songs I’ve ever suffered through. Your “skills”, if that’s what you prefer I call them, are indiscernible. Your style, the music, the lyrics, the story, EVERYTHING. The whole package is weak, poorly conceived and executed.

Melvin : This song is the formula for what has now become Emo, or what’s left of it anyhow. I don’t really care at this point because I never cared for it anyway. But I recognize it when I hear it, at least this Disneyesque version of it. It’s very well produced, and very well performed blah, blah, blah…but it’s boring. Even your target audience (my daughter of 20 years) agrees. It’s just someone writing in a specific manner that’s worked in the past and is now overused. If it makes you feel any better she said basically the same thing about my entry minus the Emo part.

Phil's First Tambourine : People lacking talent doing 30 seconds of audio jacking off. Funny. You’re the guys that promote the notion of making people pass a minimum skills test before being allowed to make a submission or an all out dictatorial approach to rooting out shit like this. Maybe then I wouldn’t have to suffer through a Pigpen song again.

PiGPEN : See above. Here I’ll make it easier for you. A person lacking talent doing 2 minutes and 5 seconds of noise. You’re the guy that promotes the notion of making people pass a minimum skills test before being allowed to make a submission or an all out dictatorial approach to rooting out shit like this. Please find another hobby or some place else to hang out.

Ross Durand : Read what I said about effects in Caravan Ray’s review. Beyond that, this song has a lot of cool stuff going on, but I’m growing tired of the Western / Hispanic motif about midway through the song. Still, the hypnotic tremolo guitar effect has me hanging on until the bitter end. Pretty good lyrics and story though, so you get points for those. Not bad, not great.

Saint Cale : Weird thing following the Ross Durand song, but you folks already discovered that. Well then, pretty much everything I said above, with the exception of the effects. This song is well produced and the vocal, which is very pleasing, isn’t hidden behind an annoying reverb. Actually, as similar as the songs are, this one sounds almost like the fixed version of the other song. Or at least close to what I would have done to it.

Shael Riley : Great vocals and the organ sound is killer. I would like to hear this with a bit more real instruments, but I also understand working with what you have. Heck who doesn’t want to have a killer band at their disposal to help them crank out songs whenever the inspiration hits? What you have here is a pretty good composition and the makings of great song once you get the assistance to make it so. But do us all a favor and lose the applause at then end. They’re cheesy and the lo-fi sound doesn’t fit the rest of a pretty well produced song.

ShoehornTC : The electronic drum bit at the beginning had me dreading this song but then the guitars kick in and then those stellar vocals. I’m glad I stuck around to hear this. The content lyrically is a little weak, but it’s well performed and the production is solid. Not my favorite song in this fight, but I’m listening all the way through and enjoying what I’m hearing. I would lose the kazoo though.

ShotPounder : YEAH! More Rock. See, like a couple of other people in this fight, this is immediately what I felt from this title. No soft ass I can’t believe the bitch left me with nothing how could she be so cruel bullshit. Just true ass as hell here’s my life and it Couldn’t Have Been Worse fuck you and I don’t care what you think of my song because it rocks REALITY! Suck It! I could be wrong though and maybe you were going for something in the ABC Comedy theme song realm. Either way it works, as long as ABC lightens up on the censorship reigns a little bit.

Superteen : This is really not good. The vocals suck. The story sucks. The lyrics suck. The playing actually is the one thing that doesn’t suck as bad as the rest of it. Too bad the melody or lack thereof sucks as well. This couldn’t have been worse if you tried. Maybe you did.

The Anchors : I really could live without ANY song’s pre-roll dribble being included in the finished product. It’s unprofessional, boring and VERY much done before. The drumbeat and instrumentation sounds pretty good, but I think if you could have gotten to the lyrics before a minute into the song you would be better served. When the vocals do come in, they’re pretty disappointing. Not really bad, because I think your vocalist will get better with more experience, but he's not there yet. Overall, not a bad song.

The BeWells : Mellow mood setting the tone right off the bat. The chord progression and overall playing lets me know this is a sad story befitting of the title. Unfortunately, the story is pretty familiar so the lyrics aren’t particularly striking, but not bad. The vocals though, wow. Very warm, smooth, well harmonized. Very slick production as well. Pretty good stuff.

The Darkest Daves : Cut and paste time. This is so far removed from anything I would choose to listen to, I can’t really say anything about it. It’s just not a song, a style or genre that moves me or inspires me to write anything you might like to read. MORE CUT AND PASTE: A glance at the lyrics has me wondering WTF? Please don’t take that as a need to respond. I REALLY don’t want to know.

The Hell Yeahs : Rock! Finally! Lord how I’ve missed you swimming through this super annoyingly large fight. What can I say other than I love the Hell Yeahs? It sucks being right behind you guys in the stream? OK, if I must……Heather’s unique voice complimented by Phil’s solid playing of multiple instruments (guitar, bass, drums for those not in the know) and warm arrangement of material are a perfect blend that as usual…..combine for a great rock song. Maybe not your best or favorite of mine, but not disappointing in any way shape or form.

c hack : Nice to see your return C Hack and that your writing skills haven’t diminished during your hiatus. Some folks may find this song a little too dark and brooding, but I’m a blues guy and I love dark and brooding. Not that this is blues mind you, but is dark and, well you get it by now. I like the vocals, especially the harmonies, and the structure of the song. But after repeated listens, it gets to be a bit much. It’s kind of like sitting at the bar listening to some guy go on about whatever the hell it is he’s going on about. After a while you just tune it out and look for another place to sit.

mico saudad : Guy and guitar is one thing. Guy and guitar singing about how he lost the girl is another. Guy and guitar singing about how he lost the girl in a title as obvious as this is just intolerable. One more thing…….rinse and repeat a thousand times.

signboy : I heard this the first time when Devo did it. And they did it a lot better. I mean A LOT BETTER. Here’s a thought, try being original. Not regurgitating other people’s work.

Well that's it pussies. All of the songs reviewed. Who else will man (woman) up and do it?

Time will tell.

with all due respect, fruityloops synths = professional sounding? ;)
hey! i use fruityloops for all my entries. >_< ... it probably shows though.
roymond wrote: The Darkest Daves - I like the drone vocals or pads. Long fading movie track goes to black

(i'm wanking on about my song from here, so you don't really need to read any more, unless you want to flame me. you know you want to.)

actually, 90% of this song just uses refx's quadrasid, sequenced using midi in fruityloops. almost the only time i've used more than just the first chip, first sound channel on the vst. all layered up nicely. the arpeggy sound was kindof a accident. I had a nice sounding baroque kind of progression going on, and i couldn't be bothered sequencing it by hand, so i tried to record it in, via midi, but of course the latency and my crappy playing made everything out of time, so i quantanized it, and it made some interesting rhythmns, so i played around the note placement a bit until it had more of a natural flow to it and voila.

all the percussion and the bassline is quadrasid too. there isn't any effects on it after it leaves the vst. The only thing i didn't do with quadrasid is the vocals and the lead sound on the outro/bridge part.

I wish I had gotten around to putting some horror sounds in, like I wanted.. like.. fingernails scratching against wood, random creaking and such, but I was freaking myself out too much at the time. I also had some twangy guitar i had to accompany it, but when i went to record it, i thought I could hear some voices coming through on the recording so i deleted it. *cough* My house freaks me out. That, and I left everything till the last night before it was due in. I also wanted to have a chorus in there as well. oh well, maybe one day.

Okay, onto the reviews (in my next post)

My first solo song fight so I thought I would put up some reviews. Not an easy task but I had some time. As stated below I'm old so take it all with a grain of salt. : )

5900-N5 - I’m kind of sheltered so this is definitely “out side the box” for me but I appreciate that.

Anchors - I have always like the drums that sound like drums in a room so that is cool. I like the mix. It loses me on the chorus a bit but tends to grow on me. Like the bass solo at the end ha ha…

The BeWells – Great production, performances and mix and I like the haunting slide-ee guitar. Backing vox right on target. The song itself doesn’t totally hook me but it’s a great effort.

Billy’s Little Trip - Classic punk sounding song, good signing and arrangement, mix. I like the guitar work in the solo, very interesting to me. Super job.

Caravan Ray – I’ve never been a fan of too many words … or that much verb on the snare. Not my cup of tea.

Carpet Burn - I love the music on this, lyrics and melody are OK but not as cool as the music.

c-hack – Was this an intro that could not find its song… I kept waiting for it to kick in and following the same basic idea it would have worked.

ClosetDark – Wow. This is impressive. I love it. You have a future in movie soundtracks and TV theme songs. That isn’t a bad thing.

Dangerous Croutons – This is dangerous. Sounds like it was fun to make.

Darkest Daves – I never was a fan of the sad synth rock of my youth (I’m old) but I recognize the goodness of this, good melody and word play, everything fits and the ahhhs and the keyboard solo in the middle is very pretty.

DJbigDick - Never really gets anywhere.

Doorite n Rankinstein - This is more dangerous than above. Well put together but it disturbs me a bit. Did I say I was old? I am.

Eddie Lance - I played purse-ee when I was a kid. Nobody died. This is like a Saturday night live skit. Is there a video for this? There should be. Piano sounds nice.

Jeremy Bornstein – I love the trolls (or whatever that is) part… gregorian chanting? Buddist monks? Crickets?

Flx Frm – Very much opposite from some of the above entries I like the actual song a bunch but the performances and recoding/mix could be better. That said, I’m into actual songs more than performances. Good job.
Hell Yeahs – There is a backing vox that sounds really cool in there. I spent much of the 90’s going to see bands that sound like this, I like the way the lyrics flow together. Drums sound like arse but he lofi is cool.

Dan-o from 5-o – I also grew up seeing lots of bands that sound like this… not a bad thing. Song doesn’t catch me although it has some spunk and catchy places.

Klownhole – Like the keyboards!! Not something I would expect to hear in such a song/band. Might win by sheer effort… I would have loved to play on it… : )

Masterhyde – I know I’m a minority here but I’m not a hip-hop guy.

McEricB – I actually like your voice. You don’t hit all the notes but I bet you could if you work it more keep singing a lot. Not a bad song but it relies almost exclusively on the voice which hurts it a bit.

Melvin – I’ve been lurking here for some time and always enjoy your stuff although there are times you loose me. This time you pull off what I think you are going for nicely. The guitars are perfect and the call and response vocals are cool. Might be my favorite so far?

Mico – Another dangerous song. Some pretty cool melody things in the there but they are not consistent enough to keep me interested. I’m kinda formula dependent. The end thing is a little annoying.

Phil’s Trombone – Ha ha…

PigPen – I’m kinda into this, I could have used a little more singing & less talky, the melody is almost there in the vox.

Ross Durand – The music recording/mix performances and all are pretty cool. The guitar solo sounds a little out of place (the first one more than the second). Pretty good stuff. Actual song good not great.

Saint Cale - Same as above (although I like your voice better, no offence Ross, she sings nice).

Shael Riley – I like the melody, a lot. The second verse much better than the first. Needs some disco guitar and better drum beats but I think it’s got potential. Space sounds in the last chorus coolio.

Shorehorn TC – I swear I mixed this level up but it’s too quiet. Mostly one take on each of the tracks (a couple were second takes). Just learned to use the automation in the mix but didn’t have time to do all the tracks. I had fun with the organ on this. I finally got one in after about three aborted attempts.

Shotpounder – Love the big sounding guitars/ bass drum mix. Once again like the music but the melody vox leave me wanting more… I’m a melody hound.

Signboy – It’s a story. I like stories, but I typically only read books one time.

Superteen – Superteen isn’t a stupid name. Better than satan.

This might be my favorite Flvxxvm Forvm song. BLT's great as well. The Klownhole song is driving me nuts, but in a good way, and as always, Melvin is great.

Non-technical reviews, just me having fun so don't get mad

Post by MATA »

Here's a reviews list from a WASPy 30-something lady. Unlike most lists, this is not technical, it's just plain what I liked. :) I'll assign grades because, well, why not?

Superteen: Instantly too repetitive. Sounds like it was recorded on the short bus. C

Flvxxvm Forvm: Mix between The Eagles and The Violent Femmes? Did not catch my interest, except the nice sing-song guitar bit between verses. C+

BeWells: Allison Krauss intro? Nice harmonies, better-than-average lyrics. "Turning" quality to song was both pretty & carries the listener along with a desire to hear more. A-

Closeset Dark: Heh. Nice. B+

Shael Riley: Female of the Species is more Deadly than the Male? Nah. Song feels like elements are too loosely layered. Pretty good overall. B

Mico Saudad: Good lyrics, but more repetitive than I like. Beatles "Revolution" inspired? B

Phil's First Tambourine: I can't keep listening. D+

Dangerous Croutons: What is this about? Very tinkly. B-

Hoosier Daddy: Is this from an Applebee's commercial or Shrek IV? Ok. B

DooRite & Rankenstein: Not my thing. I am unqualified to rate this. Well, hell, ok, it gets a C.

Billy's Little Trip: Coolness. Dance-y. Lyrics are too general. B+

Shot Pounder: Cannot tell what this person is yelling at me about. Oh, there, I made out an "oh yeah." C-

Darkest Daves: I am totally enjoying this one. I might try to figure out how to get it into my ipod. I can't be the only person who likes goth on the stairmaster, right? A

Hell Yeahs: Modern-day Waitresses song? I can't make out a lot of the words. Rockin. B+

DJ Big Fanny: What is going on here? I am not the demographic for this song. C-

Melvin: Very standard grunge. Voice has awesome flavor. Lyrics aren't speaking to me. B+

Anchors: Catchy. Simple melody. Voice sounds a little strained. Too grumpy for my mood today. C+

Carpetburn: I liked it until the singing started. C+

Shoehorn TC: Lyrics were drawn-out which got on my nerves. One of two entries to use the "blessing and a curse" rhyme with "worse." Ok overall. B

Saint Cale: Voice hits hard! Intriguing. I like it a lot. This would please a typical bar crowd. A

Signboy: Booty shaker if I was drunk. Sober, I am annoyed. C+

Fine Tuvan Dining: Plucky start. I like lyrics that actually tell a story or describe a scene--so nice. Or this could be something the B-52s would write in a jail cell. B+

Caravan Ray: Ominous like The Church. Not annoying! Can't make out all the lyrics, like it overall. A-

Eddie Lance: Hmm. Not interested. C+

Masterhyde: Crisp! Again, I like songs that tell a story, so cool. Some elements too repetitive. A-

PiGPEN: The character represented by this song is not somebody I'd be natural friends with. C+

c hack: Doesn't move me, but extra points for mentioning a velociraptor. B

5900-N5: Too wacky for my mainstream sentimentality. B-

Klownhole: Devil music! Heh. Some power that my chest enjoyed. No idea what the singer is saying. B-

Ross Durand: Nice! Drums suited very well. Good lyrics. A-

MC Eric B: OMD inspired? Voice isn't doing it for me. (Moe from The Simpsons?) Good effort. Second entry to realize the rhyme between "blessing or a curse" and "couldn't have been worse." B

Thanks for reading! I hope y'all enjoyed.

BeWells Gorgeous guitar, great drums, interesting chord progression. Good production. Tasteful slide guitar touches near the end. Actual song doesn't knock me off my feet, but I prefer lyrics that aren't quite as 'on target'

Eddie Lance Okay I know this voice. Holy crap. Star Control II, the voice of the commander of the human starbase. Wow I'm a dork. But more importantly, did you swindle that audio from somewhere, or are you the guy who did that voiceover? I call shinnanegans.
(Incidentally StarConII is a video game from ~1992 that now available free online as 'the ur-quan masters' arguably the best video game ever made. Not only does it have a cool story-line game, but there's an amazing single or two-player melee where you can choose an armada of a dozen different ships with different abilities and fight your opponent's armada. Highly recommend downloading and trying it). I don't highly recommend plagiarism. You can't call it sampling if it's over a minute long and represents the entire core of your story.

Hell Yeahs Rocking as always. I like some of the harmonies. Very tightly done.

Fine Tuvan Dining The best musical dinner review with cyclical breathing I've ever heard

Melvin Cool! It's the Foo Fighters! Oh wait. No it's not. I like this. (but again, not as much as Brimming with Tears).

Ross Durand Your voice is deeper in this than I remember it being. Which is nice and fits the song. This one will rock live.

Saint Cale Gorgeous voice. Good guitar. Favorably similar in sound to Neko Case's "Hold on, Hold on".

Shael Riley Interesting lyrics near the end. The compositional dynamics are really very good in this (there are many little bits that sound interesting when strung together), and some of those bits are very nice although there's one or two organ bits that got a little repetitive for my taste. I didn't like the Starbucks part in the beginning and end, but I got pulled in in the middle pretty well. I likesee.

Hmm not sure who gets my vote. Saint Cale, BeWells, or Shael Riley. Probably in that order. Now line up and walk past me one more time so I can be sure... :)

Hi, not sure exactly what the question is but I wrote the script and had my voice guy record the voice over part, then my boy played the boy. Thanks for the review.

Hell Yeahs: Modern-day Waitresses song? I can't make out a lot of the words. Rockin. B+
Welcome, from one 30-something lady to another. The lyrics are here if that would help. Thanks for listening and reviewing.

It's in there. Something about rhyming with "took out my retainer, put it in my purse." And something about donkeys.
That would be the DK homage. Right after the Burl Ives tribute. It's really all about the anguish of menorrhagia through use of alliteration and homily.

And donkeys.

Who is your voice-guy? He sounds similar to a voice that has narrated many video games including the one I mentioned.

I do like the story, I'm just trying to quiet down the neurons in my head that are firing when it hears that voice.
