music collection database software?

Hey All,

I'm thinking about getting some software to manage my music/movie collection. Does anyone use this kind of software and have any suggestions as to what is good/bad? I probably have 400cds and 500 records.

I just use Discogs.com. Not perfect but getting better all the time. It's also free and I can view it from any computer. Here's my stuff.

That looks serviceable. I looked through the "about" pages but saw nothing that suggests bulk imports. Can one use a scanner pen to enter one's collection?

I was researching this stuff about 10 years ago and found a few desktop applications that supported this and essentially enabled entering about 500 CDs in a few hours. Then it went out and searched amazon, B&N, AllMusic, etc. for album information and graphics. I'm curious if there are ways to achieve similar efficiencies here.

Been thinking about this again lately so this post is a timely distraction.

We just did databases in Access... no auto-scanning or whatnot, but for CDs I wanted to be able to make my own genre tags and such. We've got a CD, a DVD/video, and a book one.

Hey all, first post here. Saw this old thread, and it hit home, so I'm reviving it!

Hope to be submitting fight stuff soon.

I can defintiely provide some constructive input here, since I've done some research on this recently. I wanted to catalog my CDs and vinyl. I figured that I could maybe even finally make use of my CueCat thats been sitting in a storage box for 7 years or however long its been.

I came up with two options. Neither are free, but they both look quite promising. Both are trialware so I will have 30 days to check them out.

Granted, these were the top two that fit MY needs, so YMMV. I also have not played with either of them yet.

I checked out ReaderWare years ago and it was pretty good but I didn't pursue it, with most of my collection is storage. It's also Mac & PC, a requirement of some of us

I also want full credit data, even if I have to enter, I don't see the usefulness of these things if that metadata isn't included. It's not like I'm banging my head at the CD store "oh man, do I already own this? I don't think so...I wish I had my list!!!" But I often wish I could look up all the songs I own that have a particular guitarist on it.
