Good job on the artist descriptions Niv. I like that I'm referred to as an "up-and-comer". It makes the fact that I've been lurking around for over a year with only 12 entries and 0 wins look less pathetic :)

One thing, my co-conspirator is Jord, not Jout.

I was wondering about that, too. The post in this thread says May 10 which is a bit more reasonable.

Oh well, looks like everyone *completely* missed the joke in my song and took the sampling/"plagiarism" too seriously. I thought it was a pretty clever and funny idea, but whatever.

Good luck to the rest of you...

A lot of people are going to be out of this thing (like, you know, everybody except one). Why set a precedent for ungraceful losing when we've only just begun?

What you failed to quote was that I wished everyone good luck, and I meant that. I wouldn't say that's ungraceful.

Also if I were an ungraceful loser I would have to mind losing. I lose every time I enter songfight. Many times I get no votes at all. I don't care about that.

I am a little disappointed because I felt like no one who posted their opinion of my song actually got the point of it. So I posted my disappointment with the hopes that someone might go, "oh I see what you were trying to do now" or "I get that you were playing a game with the judges, but we have to judge you on the song and not the joke behind the song" or something.

It's a little difficult to be called a plagiarist and let that sit. I don't care about winning and losing. I just want to be understood and, if I'm lucky, respected.

So there ;)

here's my rankings with some thoughts.

The Bovine Recyclery: Dude. It took me a second or two to realise who this was. Plat on his own is scary enough but what's this? nice bass-playing! This kicks ass. my favourite so far. Is this Plat and Jack. fuck, we're in trouble.

;) : Who's the other one here? All sounds pretty good, what is that sound, are you beat a bush in time? I like this song, I'm starting to think it's one of your best, you write some really good songs man.

Billy's House: Eat my riffage. This is one of the most engaging songs I've heard from you. I wouldn't have thought an acoustic guitar was needed but it fits really well and I think your singing sounds hella cool. Glad to have you.

Stevey: Hahaha! swell. Ooh nice chord change on 0.34. You are one schmoove motherfunker. It's a travesty you only got 59 points for this.

Rolly Joger: Hey, this sounds like your really raising your game here. This production is shithot, the drums sound a weeny bit sketchy later on but not too much, the guitar and bass are great (maybe that's just cos I got new speakers). I love the angles in this, all the changes and stop starts added to a fairly catchy grunge sound. Nice grunts.

Paco: Classic Paco. This is the kind of stuff you're great at, it reminds me a lot of this band we played with (and are playing with again this Monday) called Chet, sort of, cool comedy horror rock, you should check 'em out. This is really fun and engaging.

Frankay: I had to listen to this a few times but I do think this is very nice. Probably a keeper.

Mico Suadad: Mmm cool, funky groove, I love the beats. Bass is cool, vox are okay. I'm very surprised and a little disappointed this didn't make the cut.

Abominominous: That's the stuff, this is awesome. This is drowning in atmosphee, it has Tom Waits written all over it and makes me wish I'd got some heavy chains and stuff for my track.

JT: I like this, it's a good groove to sing over and the lyrical flow is damn sweet. I wonder how this would sound played by G'n'R. Nice guitar harmonics.

Calfborg: Sounding cool, streaming problems, I'll come back to it. Your voice sounds awesome, the rest of the track is kind of cool but all the cheesy sounds take a bit of getting used to. The fire sounds are really good.

Merisan: I dig. I like the sound of the rhodes or vibraphone or whatever that is, the bongos and the vocals. It's a nice vibe although it does seem to drift by without attracting much attention. Not any uncon perc to speak of but hey.

Spinlock: Man this is crazy, it sounds like nothing else. It's cool in it's own way and it's bloody funny but it's kind of a shame that you didn't qualify cos I think some of your other stuff would have done. Did you say "Spandau Ballet!"? Piss! hahaha

Ross: Ooh, this is all smooth and sleazy. I sometimes forget you can do songs like this. The sound at around 1.50 that pans form side to side sounds really sweet.

Thank Glennny: This is okay, not your best but it'll do. The song wouldn't miss much if the weird percussion weren't there but it's okay. I like the first bit of the solo where it's all wibbly.

Bryan Kandel: S'alright, nought special but pretty good. Slow and steady, but I don't find it boring or anything. Maybe a bit too ernest for my current mood. Percussion is understated and good.

Puce: This is the first Puce track I've heard for quite a while and who knows what to expect? the percussion is cool but I can't decide whether I like the bass or not, the sound is cool but not sure about the line. It's well produced for sure but the song itself isn't connecting with me really. There's plenty to like but the melodic direction and style isn't for me.

Sp00ns: Yay, Epilepsypop! It cracks me up the way your songs transcend key.

Wreckdom: Because of the percussion thing this song feels like it never kicks in properly but it sounds good. I dig.

Tex Blowmont & the Dirty Farts: Fuckin shitty country comedy line-dancing bollocks but I love it cos it's Ray. You'd be the star of clubland if only you lived in Bolton. I like the stages this goes through and it's a big quivering ball of nerdy fun. It also sounds like the Proclaimers and I hate you for that.

Ice 9: This is okay, it's got a Jesus & Mary Chain sound about it which is pretty cool. Not a bad song, doesn't blow me away and the percussion isn't very interesting.

Mr Lostman: Sounds a bit like mid-IRS era R.E.M., mainly the guitar. This is pretty cool in a very average garage indie band kind of way.

Marcus Kellis: It sounds okaaay, not much to say.

Bewells: Nicely done and it flows very well but I do wish you'd worked that rhythm at the intro into the track more, if it's there I can hardly hear it. Instead it gives way to the egg shaker, ah the tapping comes back a bit, it sounds like Tilly and the Wall when you do, which is cool.

MC Eric B: You're a phony! A great big phony!! but seriously this is probably the best thing I've heard from you so far, though I've not listened to all your tracks.

Rabid Fargunkel: Very spooky. the heavy breathing and clicking are excellent. Good song but not my fave.

Sausage boy: Oh man, sorry, I don't like this. Some of the lyrics are good but I had to stop myself from skipping forward.

---

BL/BR: God didn't want us to make this track. We fucked him in the ear. I wish we could've used my chorus but Mel managed to get death in there anyway, good work dude. He did most of the guitar here and he rocked, I love the feedback squeal at the end.

Can't speak for the other judges, but here was my take on it, and I don't mean it in a disrespectful way whatsoever:

You took a gamble by doing what you did. Taking the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C1mrlEVtKo">lyrics and melody from "Hard to Handle"</a> was a bold move. I figured that there might have been a solid reason behind it, like a joke or something to that extent, but joke or not... all you added was "let me in." I think you would have had to consider that it could potentially backfire. Well, it did.

There were a few songs that I didn't like in this round, but at least they wrote their own material.

The thing that irritated me about it the most is that I KNOW you are <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/a_promis ... 3">capable of writing a good song.</a> It's a shame, because I was looking forward to hearing what you would come up with, but I refuse to play favorites based on whether I have met you or not.

You could have even come up with some fairly crappy lyrics and fared better than you did as a result of your gamble.

That's my take on it, anyway.

ROCK!

Yeah, It's gonna be pretty hairy at the Redmansion when I've only got an m-f to kick out the jams.

Not that it'll be impossible, just, you know, hairy.

I've started writing lyrics, and let's just say: my personal challenge to myself is to write a sleazier song than WreckdoM's this week.
