But coming up with a ridiculous title after the fact isn't hard. It's more difficult making a good song based on a ridiculous title.

Agreed.

That list was started when the Chiodos song ("... Creek") came on and I had the thought of "Wow, people would either have a field day or conniption if that was a songfight title". And then I started looking at the rest of the songs on my mp3 player.

Hanukkah is basically just "Well hey, the Christians have a big celebration this time of year, so what can we arbitrarily commemorate to keep the kids in our faith?"

Unlike Christmas where it was instead, "Well hey, the Pagans have a big celebration this time of year, so should we move our big celebratory event here and pretend it always happened this time of year? I guess we could also borrow a few things from Saturnalia while we're at it."

How dare you!

Hanukkah celebrates a major military victory and a miracle. A major point in the freedom of the Jewish people.

I always got the impression that Hanukkah itself only celebrated the fact that the Maccabees lucked out and managed to make a meager supply of olive oil last for 8 days when it was only expected to last 1. Well, that and how people managed to discuss their secret plans under the guise of dreidel. Maybe my historical/religious upbringing was lacking.

Ah, I wouldn't be the only one. Thanks to our favorite name-redacted website:
Because Judaism as a religion shies away from glorifying military victories, because the Hasmoneans later became corrupt, and because civil war between Jews is viewed as deplorable, Hanukkah does not formally commemorate these historical events. Instead, it focuses on the Miracle of the Oil and the positive spiritual aspects of the Temple's rededication; The oil becomes a metaphor for the miraculous survival of the Jewish people through millennia of trials and tribulations.

I'm pretty sure Fluffy's right - it has to do mostly with the rededication of the Temple (as far as I know).
