Will be in NYC for a day, what must I do/see?

I'm in NJ til Sunday, and I'm going into nyc tomorrow. With my mom.

So, what does a 22 year-old guy and his mom do in New York from ~9am-5pm? I've never been to ny, so Times Square, central park, etc. is probably on the list.

Where's good lunch sushi? Where are some cool shops , music and otherwise? Anything else?

Kim's is one of the best music stores ever. Actually if you go to St. Mark's Place, there's great sushi at Zen and Kim's is right across the street. I really only know the Village area.

that's funny sober, because i was in new jersey a week ago today, and went into manhattan for a few hours while there.

one thing thats cool, if you're taking a PATH train in, take it to the World Trade Center station, which is only going to be open for a short time longer apparently. the train comes out from underground and circles the footprint from the towers. it's like you're riding 3 stories underground in the original station, but now there's a big hole in it. it's about as close as you can get.

i had lunch at this great little cafe near south street seaport. the dodo cafe. really excellent organic food and right under the brooklyn bridge.

NYC was nice, but man, the bloody mobs of people drive me friggin crazy.

Dude, wish I woulda known. I work in TRiBeCa.

The PATH isn't closing, they are just building the Transportation Hub there. But they have been building forever now.

I agree with Luke and you should check out the whole St. Marks Place/ Union Square area. You can see the wonders of Kim's (best music store around), Love Saves The Day (a great vintage toy store), Forbidden Planet (exceptional comic shop), The Strand (a great book store), Max Brenner (for the chocolate lovers), Union Square Park, Pie (a very avantgarde pizza shop), Toy Tokyo (import toys), The Sidewalk Cafe (the home of Anti-folk music), The Cube (you have gotta spin it), Smac (all Mac & Cheese all the time)...

And then if you travel downtown, you will hit Chinatown and after Chinatown, the wonders of TriBeCa with stuff like Ground Zero and the South Street Seaport.

ha, i actually thought of you and looked for you while i was going through security in the newark airport niv, as for some reason i thought that's where you worked.

yeah, it was a whirlwind trip. my sister lives in fanwood, near scotch plains. i was only there for one day before driving down to virginia.

sober, take your mom to century21 department store. what a crazy place!

Well it's too late, but it's my one workday a month in NYC, so hooking up for lunch would have been fun. My office overlooks the World Trade Center construction pit. Though I look out over the Hudson instead for obvious reasons.

I hope you don't waste time on Times Square. It sucks and there's just too much greatness in NYC to waste it on the commercial crap. As has been said...The Village, China Town, Tribeca.

That said, hope you enjoy your day!

There's a million cool museums there, of course, but one of my faves is the Cloisters. It's pretty up there, and a nice break from the crowds.

Also, if you hit the village, you should definitely go to Cafe Veselka if it's still there. Ooh! I think it must be! Here's an address:
