Van Frickin' Halen

Post by Reist »

Just listened to Van Halen for the first time - I'm now obsessed and trying to learn 'Ain't Talkin' Bout Love' for guitar. My hands hurt, but my soul is light and happy. I can't say I like the lack of variety, but there are some fantastic riffs in there, and I just really enjoy some of the songwriting ... very Beatle-esque at some* spots.

*very few, but still - some.

I can't believe you've gone this long without hearing VH. VanHalen was the soundtrack to my middle/high school years ( The Cradle Will Rock being one of my favorite songs. Have you seen juniors grades?) so I may be biased but don't listen to anything after Dave left (1984 onwards). They started singing about feelings and crap. If anyone tries to convince me of the validity of post-Dave VH I will turn up Eruption as loud as I can and air guitar along with it. In fact, I may do it anyway.

I used to blast Beat It in college. Yeah, Eddie is fine at appropriate volume.

At first glance, I genuinely thought roymond wrote:I used to Beat It in college.

In JR's defence, I believe he's in high school. That means he's roughly 18 years old—correct me if I'm wrong. And I also believe that Van Halen has been shit for roughly 18 years. So he's completely excused for only just hearing them. The important thing is that he listens to that old stuff, cuz it really is brilliant.

Having said that, my eight year old will recognize Running with the Devil from the opening car horn blast and ask me turn it up. But he's gifted, yo.

Well, amen to that, but still, Van Fricken' Halen. And while you're at it JR, go watch Better Off Dead to see the best VanHalen song as played by a hamburger. Trust me.

So, why would I say just college?
