Hey everyone.
Blah. I am having problems dealing with stress. The world crazy job thing is getting to me. The family is all sad because the hamster has cancer. Everywhere I turn lately, it's just been dark spot followed by dark spot. Blah. I hate days like today. Plus it's fucking 97 degrees here in NYC. Ugh!
Question of the Day:
What's your favorite cover song of all time?
I love covers so I'm gonna take a while to think about an answer for this.

Back at the day job after a long vacation. Seemed long anyway, 'cause I did so many different things.
QotD: I will not be able to narrow this down. I'll be lucky to trim the list to five.
Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme - Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden)
Jim Of Seattle - Scared To Death (Glenn Case)
The Coolies - Scarborough Fair (Simon & Garfunkel) (actually the whole DIG album was great)
Ben Folds - Songs Of Love (The Divine Comedy)
Ruben Blades - The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul (XTC)
Yeah, I could keep going.

QotD: "American Woman" by the Butthole Surfers, although "99 Red Balloons" by 7 Seconds really is a pretty close second.
Yesterday I went to the Goodwill, and as I was parusing the VHS titles, I saw the Hal Hartley film "The Unbelievable Truth", which I see alot there. I wondered why I never see any other HH films at the Goodwill, and then I moved over a bit and saw like five of his movies all together. I bought Trust (in addition to Harold and Maude) and then was unable to watch either last night because the person I was watching them with didn't want to see movies with characters who are fascinated with suicide.
We watched Galaxy Quest, and then freaked out a little bit when we saw the Mac Guy in there.

QotD: Sooo many, I'm a song cover fan...
There are a number of songs that I enjoy the cover thoroughly more than the original. (For instance, Like a Prayer (orig. Madonna) by Rufio.) But probably my favorite cover of all time is probably "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by The Starting Line. (I forget who did it originally, Kenny Loggins I believe).

QotD: One of my fave covers is David Bowie's cover of "Knock on Wood" on the "David Live" CD. Almost everybody who does this song (I heard it on American Idol several times last year) does it with a swing beat, but Bowie's cover has a straight rock beat and it's awesome. Kinda stands out because (for me) Bowie was able to find something in the song that makes it way better than the original.
Today... various errands, including all the honeydew stuff the Mrs. is coming up with. Dentist appointment, stop by and see my mom, run by the church and (a) figure out why the monitors weren't working Sunday and (b) see if anybody's donated any new computer parts for our Mexico trip.
Picked up a CD this morning with some more audio files from the film shoot a week ago Saturday, I need to get them catalog'd into the library to deliver to the director on Saturday (wrap party for a previous project). We recorded all these files with handclaps at the start of each take for syncing the audio, but I get the impression that the director is editing the video separately and then his brother will be laying in the dialogue on top of that (at which point the handclaps won't be visible on the video anymore, which will make syncing a lot more difficult). Hmm...

You know, this is actually up there for me. I play this song for people sometimes just to show people what can be done with songs they didn't think could or should be covered.fluffy wrote:add music - take on me
R.E.M.'s Superman is pretty good too.
I'm a sucker for Cake's cover of I Will Survive. (Their new cover 'War Pigs' is OK but his voice isn't right for it... but I suppose it's tongue and cheek anyways)
Is it Wilco or Fountains of Wayne.... Britney Spear's Hit Me Baby (one more time) Thats fun.
I could go on forever. ANYTHING BY ME FIRST & THE GIMMIE GIMMIES.
Monday. Not too bad so far. Had a busy weekend so I'm tired but still in a pretty good mood.

Thanks Paco.
I still can't answer my own QotD. I wanna give an answer but I immediately fear that I'm gonna leave off an excellent cover. I think of songs like "Pillars" by Glenn Case & Plat, "Charlotte Sometimes" by the Hell Yeahs, "Hey Ya" by Boss Hoss, "Sexyback" by Rockplazacentral, and then another wave of songs hits like "Running Up That Hill" by Sweatysuedelips, "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" by At the Drive In, "Ava Adore" by Candymachine 88, "Losing My Religion" by Scary Kids Scaring Kids, "Like A Prayer" by H20....The list can go on and on of covers that I love. Hmmm, maybe "I Wanna Be Adored" by Year of the Rabbit. This is gonna take more thought.

Bill Frisell's version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" is the ultimate cover, in my opinion.
edit: but about stress... I completely empathize. I'm nearly constantly stressed out... I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, so nearly everything makes me anxious. It's a stupid feeling.
booooo.

Well, Cake, I Will Survive is one of mine, but its getting all used up here and I don't like sloppy seconds.
1000 Mona Lisa's - You Oughta Know (Alanis Morissette) couldn't find a working vid or link for the life of me, but it's awesome. It is a hidden track on their first EP. Maybe I should upload it.

I also love covers so this one is really hard. Let's see -- off the top of my head:
"Pictures of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo as envisioned by Camper Van Beethoven (Actually, I must admit I've never heard the original, but damn, Key Lime Pie is a good album!)
"Cactus" by the Pixies as envisioned by David Bowie
"She's Real" by Kicking Giant as envisioned by Built to Spill
OH! And of course, John Cale's version of "Hallelujah." That's probably number one for me.

These guys are from the Phoenix area, and when I was taking recording classes at Mesa Community College in 2001, they came in and we recorded them in the MCC studio. I don't know if it's the same people in the band, but it's kinda cool that they're still around and starting to make a splash... they're on the warped tour this year and probably a bunch of other places...Niveous wrote:"Losing My Religion" by Scary Kids Scaring Kids

That's pretty cool. They've changed drummers a couple of times but everyone else is the same.king_arthur wrote:These guys are from the Phoenix area, and when I was taking recording classes at Mesa Community College in 2001, they came in and we recorded them in the MCC studio.
