I keep coming back to Comfort Eagle.
It's the best argument for using delay instead of reverb, for keeping some high end on your bass guitar, and generally for letting every instrument have a few moments in the sun. It just sounds clean and in-your-face.
Lyrically they try to be overly clever. But the guitar work is tight and humble. There's no show-boating. The energy comes from a lot of rhythmic intensity and careful, shifting arrangement.
I have no idea what they're like live, or in interviews. But that's a damned cool-sounding album.

Cake played for free in Berkeley one day. They were just as tight live as on record. Some jerk threw a water bottle at the singer. He stopped the show, made the guy come up on stage and apologize. It was a classy move.

Everybody loves cake! (I'm convinced thats why they named themselves Cake)
I love this band. I have seen them twice and have like 5 of their records. War Pigs cover is a little weird...but fun... and reflects current events in a way.
I'm currently playing bass in a band on the weekends while Ghost Town Gridlock is on haiatus. I add a TOUCH of distortion and a little slap back delay. I have always added just a touch of slap back to my vocals in most recordings have I made in the last 5 or so years. Including my GTG tracks.
Cake rocks!

I love Cake, too. Some of their songs are so full of riffs and hooks, on every track, it's amazing. I love the War Pigs cover, which I heard on the radio recently. They seem like cool dudes, judging from the stuff on their Web site, and their decision to go indie. I'll probably buy their album over PayPal.

I adore Cake. I even covered them once, and would totally be up for covering them again in a Cake bake-off.
One thing though, am I the only one whose favorite Cake album is Prolonging the Magic? Comfort Eagle, Fashion Nugget and Motorcade of Generosity always seem to get hailed in Cake-related discussions, but PTM never seems to get any love.

I like the first two cuts best myself. Motorcade and Fashion are just so fresh and unique. I don't think the others are crap by any stretch of the imagination. Prolonging isn't necessarily the 'weakest' album but I have to be in the mood for that one...and to me, it's a good alternative to Comfort Eagle.
I relate Motorcade and Fashion
as I relate Comfort and Prolonging

Not at all. If I gave an order, Prolong the Magic would be number 2 and is quite often the first CD I go to. I don't care for Cool Blue Reason, ok, but not my fav, but Never There, Satan is My Motor, Walk On By, and pretty much the whole CD is great! One thing though, am I the only one whose favorite Cake album is Prolonging the Magic?

I guess I have to listen to some Cake then so that I will know what you are talking about.Billy's Little Trip wrote:I predict Steve Durand being a very busy collaborator in a Cake Cover Fest.

If this were to happen, I think I'd have to call Rock and Roll Lifestyle.
