Oh, I just remembered another horror flick my friend brought over some time ago. I think it was called something like the audition. It's one of those Japanese horror movies. It's nuck'n futz! Along the lines of the type of gore from Hostel.

"Hard Candy" - as I said, not a "horror" flick, but not an "adult" film (as in lots of nekkidity) either. But the main character in my "Sugar Shaker" song would find it mighty scary, I think. (And in "Hard Candy," we are led to believe that the guy is not just an old dude with a fondness for the young ones, he's a rapist / killer, too).

My mood has improved a bit, but the day itself is goin' downhill fast. My mom's air conditioner is broken, in a new and different way, which probably means new and different repair parts and costs. And the company that did the work two or three days ago - called and they have a message that, due to a death in the family, they are closed all day today, but will be open again tomorrow. So we've moved my mom over to our house for a couple days (not a great solution, as all the bedrooms are upstairs, but we can probably limit it to one trip up in the evening and one trip (make that "journey") down in the morning). And we're trying to figure out where she should stay while we're out of town for three days... we do, at least, have a couple options, and if the A/C company can fix her unit tomorrow, she could go back to her house, as long as her home care person knows who to contact if it dies yet again.

Hoblit wrote: I find young girls to be scary for some of the same reasons her character displays. The way girls will manipulate decisions based on lies they know they can get other people to believe...such as rape or molesting. Instantly the guy would be 'guilty' by a jury of peers...and any guy knows that. I also think that young girls are vandictive enough to rationalize these ideas as fitting to their situation(s). And they're just dumb, immature, and emotional enough to execute their bad ideas.<b>This is all in general ladies, I don't think that every female child is some psycho waiting to boil over.</b> I've seen it though. From the girls who cry 'rape' to the girls cry 'pregnant'.

See, that movie feeds all of my relevant fears of the female child.
WTF?!? Hoblit, I've tolerated some of your other posts about women, but this is just ridiculous. You can't just preface a statement like this with "<b>This is all in general ladies, I don't think that every female child is some psycho waiting to boil over.</b> " and expect that to make what you just said ok.

I've never seen the movie, but even though Hoblit said it wasn't a general statement, it certainly seemed to be a blanket statement of fact.

I suppose I'd get labled a "feminist" (used it the negative way) for believing that girs are not manipulative unless they are raised to be. This shit really bothers me, but I don't think this is necessarily the right forum to discuss "feminist" issues.

Carry on with the roll call and ignore me as usual.

My day was busy and dumb. I got to work a bit late, so I had to stay a bit late. I didn't get home until 5:45. The house is a mess and I have to clean it, make a cake, wrap presents, and sleep sometime before the birthday party tomorrow. Then Sunday - Tuesday I'll be at the AACRAO conference. Fun.

I guess I'll post some pics of my sweetie's party, but I certainly don't want to cause any nightmares with my devil child or anything.

I haven't watched many horror movies in my life. I wasn't allowed to watch them when I was younger. I think my mom was attempting to protect me from the ridiculous portrayal of women and girls in those type of films. But as an adult, The Ring scared the shit outta me. One of my favorites, billed as the goriest horror film ever made, is Dead Alive (the unrated version). It is way more a comedy spoof on horror films, but it is really gory.

The First Stone by Helen Garner is a very interesting read that would in many ways support Hoblit's thesis

The Devil's Rejects is my favorite horror movie of all time. I binged on some great horror recently. Calvaire is a great backwoods psycho movie set in Beligum with cabaret singing and pig-fucking abound. The Manson Family was mind-blowingly good, not really a documentary but a really impressionistic/dark psychedelic movie not about Charles Manson himself but the lives he destroyed. Great great filmmaking. And Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, was a great dissection of slasher flicks. But, The Devil's Rejects is perfect. Hilarious, disturbing, horrific, stylish, chaotic, characters that you love and are disgusted by all at once.

Oh! That reminds me! "Bad Taste" is another great Peter Jackson comedy/ horror movie. (And Peter Jackson's in it!)

Good stuff, if you like the horror/comedy blend.

Dunno what my favorite horror movie would be. I never saw Hostel, as I don't think I could handle the torture stuff. (I had to turn off "The Audition.")

I tend to like psychological horror. I thought that movie "The Others" was a good underrated flick. It had a nice Henry Jamesian thing going on. I also really liked "Mullholand Drive" and the Shining. I also liked "The Sixth Sense" although that Shamalamadingdong guy hasn't done anything good since.

The most recent "scary movie" I saw was 1408, which was depressingly ungood. Maybe even downright silly.

QotD: Dawn Of The Dead (1979). In my opinion, the best zombie movie ever made. The perfect balance of character, gore, and social commentary. The original Night Of The Living Dead is a masterpiece too.

I'm such a horror buff that I don't really get that scared by 'em, but seeing The Omen when I was 8 in a physics class (don't ask) gave me an adam's apple phobia that lasted for a good fifteen years. (It's the scene with the photographer and the sheet of glass). A lot of movies (like Hostel say) gross me out, but that's different. probably the end of "audition" really was the only recent horror that creeped me out. It's gross AND creepy mental head-screw as well.

I'm assuming that everyone who's saying The Ring mean Ringu rather than the remake. Well not assuming- hoping ...

Oh, as fluffy says, comedy-horror - I love Army of Darkness. But that's way more comedy than horror.
Bubba Ho-Tep was odd and funny, but more odd than funny :) But definitely enjoyable.

Please, please, please let this be the start of a Anti-M/Heather Redmon collab that uses a deadly mix of sex and rock and roll to crush the pre-dominantly male SF community.
