Roll Call!

Hey folks. It looks like the weather may be turning today so there just might be a Harry Potter party in my neighborhood after all. And I would also like to say a big happy birthday to Aurora, my housemate/best friend/etc. And I have got another harebrained scheme in my head.

Mugh. Woke up to find an "accident" in the studio room this morning. Poor pup couldn't hold it

No more pizza for her! Auditioning a singer tonight in the very same room, speaking of harebrained schemes, heh. Same ol', same ol'... Other schemes are still on deck, yes, looking for the sound & feel that complements them, which be tough, even still.

QOTD: Geez, that's a tough one. Let's go with Brian Tyler & the Red Elvises' soundtrack to "Six String Samurai". A close second would be Danny Elfman's score for "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"

And now I'm late for work. Oy.

Off to The Balsams again after work. Last night I hosted the open mic at The Lucky Dog, and it was a rowdy old time.

I lowered the levels on my CD tracks and re-submitted them. I haven't heard back yet.

As of yesterday, Sean is crawling, which means we now have to move all that stuff we've been saying we were gonna have to move soon. He's nine months old already.

QotD: I've been listening to a lot of movie scores/soundtracks lately. 'Pi' is a strong favorite.

It's more of a score than a soundtrack, but I like the music in "Trust" no matter what you call it.

Niveous...Tampa weather is finally acting like Florida weather...by that i mean it is beautiful sunny...then it rains in the afternoon...then it's crazy sunny again. (Therefore 100% humidity!)

QotD: The score to the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" was my first taste of modern classical music. Still holds up, though I know now that George Martin was happily quoting/ripping off Ravel, Bartok, Stravinsky, and the rest. For a time I just thought he was a genius. Which he kind of is, though not in composition. And the band's songs, some of which were throwaways since they kind of hated the idea of the cartoon movie they were contractually obligated to write songs for, were supercool: Hey Buldog is still a favorite.

Of note, too, is the score to "The Dark Crystal" by Trevor Jones. I really like that one.

QotD: I can't think enough to pick one, but I like Elfman's work, and I really liked the songs for Breakfast on Pluto, with songs like "Windmills on my mind" and especially "You're Breakin' My Heart" by Harry Nilsson. No so much that all the songs are great, but how they're used in the movie is fabulous.

QotD: since it was one of my three Desert Island Disks, I guess I'd have to go with the soundtrack to "A Hard Day's Night." Geoff Emerick's book on recording the Beatles has shown up in the clearance stores at the outlet mall, and I've been reading that the past two or three days, too.

Day so far has mostly been taken up with taking my mom to pool class and lunch, and now I'm stopping in at home briefly before taking the dogs over there for a short visit, so they feel like they have something to write about in the Roll Call thread over on dogfight!.

Looks like I'll be collab'ing with Wages for the So Weird fight. That means I'll have to dig out the strat tomorrow from the back of the closet where I hid it away before we left for Mexico Sunday. Gawking Urethras are back!

It looks like the AAD main page at CrapArt hasn't been updated since the end of last year... so I guess my AAD won't be getting much exposure for a while...

Quick aside: I was watching "Futurama" and the song "TV PARTY" by Black Flag came on. My wife was in the bathroom and heard the song. She leaned out and said "You aren't watching Repo Man without me are you?!?!"

I have always been partial to the Spawn soundtrack. Terrible, terrible movie, but the (then) odd pair-ups of bands yielded some interesting stuff.

A particular favourite is No Remorse by Slayer and Atari Teenage Riot

Ooh, I love both of those, so I think I should check out The Fountain. Thanks!

I really like Star Wars, Princess Bride, Bladerunner, The Sting... but if I have to pick a favorite right now I'm going with Bladerunner.

Something very bad happened the other day. I'm sure this has happened to someone here. I have a favorite pair of pants. They are the only pair of pants that I have ever loved and the only pair to ever fit me well. It's a pair of brown courdoroys. Lately they've been getting thin, especially in the ass area. A couple days ago (I forget which day) a huge tear showed up in the ass. I don't know when or where it happened, but I saw the tear when the pants were on the floor. The ass is too thin to fix. Now I have to go try to find a replacement pair, a pair of pants with the exact same fit and comfort, and buy several pairs. This will be difficult. Pants-buying is extremely difficult and annoying for tall, skinny males. The measurements on the pants are 32-32, vintage cut by Unionbay, but the Unionbay website showed nothing about these pants still existing. I must look around stores and find replacements. I am in need of replacements. My other pair of pants do not fit quite right and are not nearly as comfortable. Oh fuck.

This is the worst thing to happen to me all summer.

So, really amazing news today (which is why I'm posting in Roll Call for nearly the first time)... but first, back-story!

I live in a third-floor apartment on the hot side of a--to speak euphemistically--quaint building. The neighborhood is not so great: lots of sirens, my car has been broken into, and there was an honest to goodness shoot-out on my street a few months ago. But, more importantly, my downstairs neighbor is a real problem when it comes to my noisemaking. I can't play my electronic drumkit, even though it makes no sound, because the dull clack of sticks on practice-pads makes him thump his ceiling in protest. If I sing or play an instrument, he will turn up his music full volume to drown me out, which would be fine if it wasn't so loud that it leaks into my mic when recording. As a result of his escalating reactions to my hobby, I have recently become extremely mic-shy. So, basically, I need to move.

Well, yesterday, on what essentially amounted to a whim (there's an elaborate story behind that too, but I'll keep this short), I looked at a small house for rent. It's a two bedroom, but the rent is cheap because of its peculiar location: it's in the middle of commercial zoning. I guess they rezoned at some point and for some reason this house was never torn down. As a result, it has no neighbors... in fact, there's no building of any kind within a 50 foot radius. It's also close to where I work. I fell in love with the place immediately, only to be crushed when I found out that 17 other people had already applied.

But by now you've deduced that I got the place. And I did, Sherlock. I move in on August 1st. And I gave notice for my current place, which is being shown to new tenants starting tomorrow. According to Plat, all the landlords in my town must take some type of potent amphetamine. No neighbors means I can drum, sing, and practice whenever I want without fear of admonishment. Hell, I could get a real drumkit. A whole band could practice there. Two rooms means a) a dedicated studio room, and b) people can actually crash at my place. Perhaps it's the Al-Gore-predicted-Global-Warming-induced-heatstroke, but I'm starting to think crazy things like SF Live: Victoria ("Songfight! Shakin' [Canadian] Bacon"?), so I need to go lie down and breath deeply into a paper bag for a while.

So, to recap: Yeeee-haa!
