August 10, 2007
good morning everyone.
i have an idea, and i don't know if it will be welcomed or hated, so i thought i'd run it by the roll call gang.
i think it would be nice to have a thread (maybe for each songfight, or maybe just one big one) where you can speak about the production, players, and/or ideas behind your submissions.
pretty often, songfight supergroups show up and i would be interested in reading a bit about who played on the track and how it all came together. i know that music is supposed to speak for itself, but i love stories about how songs are written, what sparked what idea, and who plays what on which song, and why.
the "liner notes" thread got me thinking about this, but that one seems focused on listing what bands you participated in, which isn't the same as what i'm suggesting. i don't think this would necessarily fit in the prefight, the reviews, or the lyrics threads.
any thoughts?

I would put that in the review thread... actually I do anyway. Keep it together with the songs. Is this really a QOTD?

I think it would. Try it.The Weakest Suit wrote:i don't think this would necessarily fit in the prefight, the reviews, or the lyrics threads.
We have a work lunch outing today to one of my favorite restaurants in Ann Arbor. Ergo, I am incapable of working. Oddly, I am very capable of web surfing, coffee drinking, and thinking about what kind of cheese to have on my burger*.
Go figure.

fodroy - your profile says you're in muncie. the music scene there has really grown in the past few years: the spitshine, charlie don't surf, arrah & the ferns, margot and the nuclear glom-ons, this story. please tell me you know these bands.

weakest do0d I don't think anybody REALLY thought your avatar was racist... it was just black vs white...and it could be interpreted that way if someone really wanted to take it there. Otherwise... it's white ninja vs black ninja or whatever.
anyways, I'm at work..days not over, It'll be over around tomorrow morning at 5am. Then I sleep.

Weakest, there wasn't anything wrong with your avatar. It was pretty rad.

Man, this was the lamest roll call ever. No real QotD...
Anyway, my day was long. I think I jinxed myself last night when I talked about my morning routine. I missed my 6:17 bus this morning so I went for the 6:34 bus. It never came, so I waited for the 6:59 bus and it never came either. I knew I was going to be late for work, but I still had to get there so I walked some blocks to a different bus route and caught that one at 7:18. When I finally got to work it was 8:15 and my boss was concerned.
I worked and worked and worked today, but then I got to go to my favorite lesbian friend Rachel's going away party / happy hour. I drank alot (because I didn't have to drive home) and got really loud and silly in front of work people. That was fun. By the time I bussed all the way back to Saint Paul, it was after 9 pm.
Phil had to go to work right when I got home, but he sure was nice to let me go! He had to take advantage of my buzz, so we had a quickie in the basement (so the kids couldn't get to us) right next to the washer and dryer. I sent him off to work with a smile on his face.
Now is this roll call a little better than before? 8)

Oh goodness, my roll call can't compare to quickies next to the washer and dryer, but, uh, I'll try my best.
I'm seeing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for free as a volunteer for Y-Rock on XPN, woo!. Pretty good show, though I must confess I've never really heard much of their music. I also feel rather silly when saying their name, as it just all feels a little superfluous. However I do need to get back home from Philly at 11 at night on my own. Woooo, let's hope I don't get killed

I know them, but fuck those bands. Actually, I don't know The Spitshine. I've heard of Charlie Don't Surf, but I've never heard them. Arrah, This Story, and Margot make annoyingly cute indie-pop. This Story is just a cheap Bright Eyes knockoff. From my experience they're mostly nice people. I got drunk with a guy from This Story the other night and I work with one of This Story's member's brother (that was a mouthful). I wouldn't consider Margot to be part of the scene though. I think they lived in Muncie at one point, but they're all major label now. I saw them once and was like, "Ok. They're a band and they know how to play their instruments. Ok." I just feel like the scene here tries too much to sound like what an indie band in 2007, in the midst of mp3 blogs, is supposed to sound like. Me and a group of friends are actually trying to overthrow the current scene with our joke hardcore bands. We will do this by playing shows in Muncie's only independent record store the Village Green and we will talk shit about all the bands between songs and we'll probably show our dicks too and also get really drunk and say fuck a lot.The Weakest Suit wrote:avatar changed.Bjam wrote:Ahaha, it is. The song "Cunt Water" on Møurning Brëth's page is our parody of all the Muncie bands. Arrah heard it and thought it was really funny. But we were kind of not joking when we challenged them to cover it.
Oh yeah, and I was just joking when I said your avatar was racist.

why shit over all the bands in the same music scene as you? most of the people in those bands are right out of high school, and just starting their musical careers, and for the most part, still finding their voices and styles. if your music is that much better than theirs, why not support them, and influence them in a more positive way?fodroy wrote:I know them, but fuck those bands. I didn't mean to shit all over them. You asked me if I knew of them and I said yes and gave you my opinion. I don't say that I like something if I don't like it. Likewise, if you ask me about something and I don't like it, I'll say I don't like it. I know there are talented musicians here. I just don't like what they're using the talent for. The scene here, like most scenes, is completely based on sounding alike and fitting in. Like you said, they're all very young, yet all they care about is getting signed. This is all they talk about. The singer from This Story is famous for complaining about their record label and he's only like 18.The Weakest Suit wrote:why shit over all the bands in the same music scene as you? most of the people in those bands are right out of high school, and just starting their musical careers, and for the most part, still finding their voices and styles. if your music is that much better than theirs, why not support them, and influence them in a more positive way?
I have nothing against This Story or Arrah and the Ferns. I'm sure they're good at what they do. I just don't like listening to them.
You didn't mention Everything, Now! who's pretty good. Though, I think Jon Rogers just graduated, so they probably won't be around anymore. And Castle Oldchair is pretty good. Though, the guy responsible for the music is a bit of an insane druggy. I guess he was in a band with some of my friends and they had to kick him out because he refused to play a song unless there was a dildo on the hi-hat.
So there are a couple more Muncie bands to check out that are better than the bands who get their dicks sucked by all the mp3 bloggers.
