Another day in pair of dice
Warm peach pie and I got a slice

Day started great!
Went surfing for a couple hours
Energy is busting out
A couple biz stops today, nothing tough
Few ideas for next weeks title fight
Going to give them a go later
Felling something "angular"
I'll let the spirits guide me

Question Of The Day:
Have you ever had a quickie in the basement right next to the washer and dryer while a little tipsy and the other had to go to work? Image
Kidding, I'm just still laughing about that one. But I guess you can answer it if you want.

The REAL QOTD:
Have you ever written a song that was so personal that you decided not to play it for anyone? If so, give as many details as you are comfortable giving. Or do you have an incredibly personal song that you did record to share with the world? If so, what was it about and why did you write it?

I do have a few that will never see the light of day, but I needed to write and arrange them to get them out of my system so that I could move on. But I have done many that I was a little unsure of performing or recording, but did anyway. This is kind of pathetic, but years ago when I had songs that I didn't want to admit I wrote, I would say a friend wrote them. Now I feel more comfortable with myself. Plus I've found new ways to write and generalize so that I satisfy my muse and still get the passion of the meaning across.

Konichiwa Songfighters!

It's Saturday so I have spend the morning eating pancakes, playing the Wii with the family, working on Septemberian stuff and watching some glorious tv from my childhood as the Kinderlings learned about shows like "Out of this world", "My Secret Identity", "Centurions" and "The Adventures of Pete and Pete".

QotD: Nope. We don't drink in the house and our basement is too creepy for quickies.

QotD2: Many a time. Most notably is the whole Broken Monster album. I wrote a whole set of songs during my struggle with depression. The idea was to make the album with the help of the SF community but the lyrics hit too close to home and I couldn't bear to make the album.

Also there's "Mean To Me". "Mean to Me" is one of a set of about 4 songs that were written in my depression. Mean To Me is the most mainstream and least personal. Some of the others like "Oblivious" and "What do I get in the deal" are much more personal. They're good songs but I'll never play them.

QotD1: Why yes I have!

QotD2: Nope

This morning at about 3:45 am, a crazy storm came through and knocked out the power, brought down a big branch from our huge 90 year old black walnut tree in the back yard, and split one of the neighbor's trees in half. Apparently there were 80mph winds. It was scary and I should have brought the kids down to the basement, but I was tired and didn't realize how bad it actually was until this morning when it was light. Spencer woke up scared, but Allison didn't stir at all. Phil was at work, so Spencer came to sleep in bed with me. He kicked me the rest of the night.

The power didn't come back on until about 1hr 1/2 ago. It was starting to get really hot in the house and everything in the freezer was melting. All is well now.

Tonight is our street's block party. Should be fun.

Only one of my songs qualifies as incredibly personal. Initially, I was going to keep it to myself because it was so personal that I was afraid to put myself out there like that. I am already my own worst critic and the thought of someone not getting my point or thinking it was corny made me shelf it. It's been over ten years and I am not really self conscious about it at all. I was 24 when I wrote it and being 37 I look forward to feedback instead of cower from it.

It was written the day my favorite singer songwriter died and has been to this day the only song I have written from start to finish in one sitting no lyric re-writes etc.

If you are so inclined you can listen to it here:

http://www.myspace.com/hollyandthesleestaks

It's the third track down.

My apologies for being so verbose on a Saturday...I have the house to myself and got tired of watching the paint dry.

I like that one Sleestak. I hate how Mice Pace cuts off the song names. It Always Rains In....? I'm guessing Seattle, right?

I've already heard So Weird, but AFOG rocks too. You have skillz bruva.

Yeah, I hate that My Splice likes to truncate the song titles. It is called, "It always rains in Seattle"

I am glad you liked it :D at 24 it sure felt like I was putting my heart and soul on the line to let anyone listen to it.

More than anything though, I sincerely appreciate the feedback.

I just replaced my broken 4-track with another caveman era 4-track complete with a pteradactyl inside it with a witty comment.

QotD2: Everything has been recorded, but there are a few projects that have never been shown to anybody - the "Dirty Old Mannerisms" thing I mentioned a few episodes back, and another thing called "Love Song for a Church Girl" for which the lyrics were written in 1972, the music and recording were done in 1992, and also hasn't been shown around at all. It's not exactly that this stuff is so private and personal, it's more that I think it would creep people out to know I was writing it :-)

I guess I could also mention that I did set a couple of Niveous' "Broken Monster" lyrics to music (apparently to his satisfaction), and I think I do sorta have his permission to continue working on the project... there was one song from that called "Justified (One More Death in the World)" that actually felt a lot more personal for me than almost anything I've ever written myself... it's scary how often I find myself singing that song in my head...

Anyway... wrapping up a fairly productive week, including a trip to Mexico and getting seven computers ready for Wesley Center (working on #8 tonight), a little recording, etc. etc. I pretty much managed to avoid making any progress on the job hunting front, but I got enough other stuff done that I'm not feeling horribly guilty about it at the moment. For me, that makes it a good week...

I worked from 10-4 and three people came in. Three! And there were workers out the back sorting out some landscaping, and workers in the store next door refurbishing, and all I could hear was Hammer Hammer Screw Screw Bash Bash Sweep Sweep. It was very busy sounding. But I read and watched Undeclared and ate a tasty turkey sandwich. I went to see 'Becoming Jane' this evening with a friend, and oh my god it was just so tragic. Why even bother with love or romanticism or boys? Bleh. Definitely turned the night in a poignant/sadness sort of way. But we got ice cream on the way home and all is better.

QOTD: One song, that can be found on Songfight, is disgustingly honest and open and I played it off as a story written about a friend's issues(because I hate sharing 'me', for I am a big old sissy), but it's not about a friend, and it's all about me and highly... not embarrassing, but I definitely would make a funny face if someone was to question me about it. The original lyrics were a lot more 'real', but I figured it was very melodramatic and toned it down. Mhmm. I want to make silly kitschy songs, but all I can write are silly melodramatic ones.

More than kinda. You have my full permission. And more people need to hear Justified. I love that song.

The only song I have ever written lyrics for, "House in my Head", has never been set to music or recorded for personal reasons. It may be someday however, once I am more satisfied that I can do it justice.

Hey, Spud, you're building a House on Your Property. That trumps a house in the head any day!

Anybody who'd like to hear "Justified," here it is 'til I need the space for something else...

This was yesterday and I swore I posted... my head hurts. Probably because I'm at work with a hangover.

qotd: While I have had a quickie WITH a washer and dryer, I haven't had one next to a washer and dryer.

trqotd: I have a couple of inappropriate songs that are very personal to me. I just recently played one of those songs live in front of a person that I didn't want to necessarily hear the song while secretly hoping that person would hear the song. Not sure if this person did or did not hear the lyrics. I will never ask.

qotd2: Yes. And I never shared them because they're too emo and lame. Though I hate some stuff that people have actually heard because it makes me uncomfortable. But I usually retract that stuff. I hate things that deal directly with emotion.

I always stick personal stuff in my songs. They are just buried deep beneath layers of fantasy and hyperbole.

Actually, thats not true. I can think of a bunch of songs that are intensely personal, but everyone just assumes I am being childish or funny. Which is the way I like it.

I've never been afraid of sharing personal content whether through song or in conversation. I'm more afraid of performing and screwing up. :)

Though there are songs I feel suck so bad I wouldn't want anyone to hear them. And sometimes that is sad because on some songs I thought the lyrics were pretty good, but the music was pretty horrible.

QOTD: While I tend to pass off my more personal songs as fictional (Names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent, etc), there are some which nobody knows about. IRonically enough, my angriest song is non-fictional, and I make no secret of it.
