Somehow I missed this last year. Don't want to do so again!

In.

Now I have to think of songs...

[edit] Now with a songlist! A good variety, I think.

[double edit] And now linkage!

Gogol Bordello - Wonderlust King
Nick Drake - One of These Things First
Nickel Creek - The Lighthouse's Tale
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem - Can You Picture That?

No offense what-so-ever to Niveous or Eddiebangs, because they do a fantastic job with this each year, but the Hell Yeahs will not be participating in the Grift of Screwsic this time.

It's always fun to do cover songs, and I'm resisting every urge to say we're in, but we're not in. Due to past experience with the giving and the not receiving (from the designated gifters - other Songfighters have always come through for us) it pains me to say that we're out.

I hope past years have taught us all that there should be some sort of accountability, or something... I'm sorry if I appear bitter, but I kind of am.

I hope everyone has a great time with GOM this year and that every gifter is gifted.

I'm in again, i'll post me 4 tunes later but....

my missus wants in too, as a separate entity so she can get a song covered (she has terrible 80's taste in tunes, don't tell her i said that tho)
do i have to register her to take part or can i just say thre's 2 of us taking part in this GOM separately even though we will both feature heavily in each others GOM............yes, me is taking part and mrs rinkydink is taking part in this GOM, jeez its wile early to be starting christmas things!

that is an excellent song. I got to see BTS a few weekends ago. Glenn Case went to Minus the Bear, who played the same venue the next night in the city in which he lives, and not Built to Spill, which I think was a huge mistake. they didn't play that, but they did play Sidewalk, Carry the Zero, Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss, Time Trap, Velvet Waltz, In the Morning... ah. they're from Boise, which is more or less where I'm from, and I seen 'em a bunch of times. everyone from Boise who is hip talks about Doug Martsch as if they're good friends. including me. I see him at the Co-Op and at the park with his fam.

Enter as 2 people - and give us two lists - and with a bit of luck, Heather will draw one of you two to do her song and not some loser, and you will make Heather happy again and all will be right with the world. Just like when Mrs Brady sang Christmas carols while Mr Brady was being rescued from the collapsed building in A Very Brady Christmas.

But it is unfortunate for the Redmons - I've had a 100% strike rate from my past givers so far (thank you Primitive Screwheads, Jim Tyrrell and Calfborg)

Plus, it has the bonus of explaining the chord progression in the lyrics, which makes it a plus one for any GOM song!

Yeah, I've seen BTS a number of times. Most recently with Camper Van Beethoven, which was pretty damned cool -- although my fav gig remains the one from the tour in which they were playing the cover of the Talking Head's "Dream Operator." That show was fantastico.

I knew they were identical twins...I thought they just wore flannel because they were Canadian. They're both lesbians, huh? Well, that would support the theory that there might be a "gay gene," wouldn't it?

Okay Hell Yeahs,

Every year so far, you have gotten screwed in some way while putting up an awesome tune. And every year I feel horrible about this. So, if you guys walk away from GoM, I'll completely understand.

But.... I won't let you go without making an offer.

If you stay, I will hand pick your giftgiver (not at random).

And if you still get stiffed, I will personally make it up to you by covering a whole album's worth of Hell Yeahs' songs (min. 10 songs).

That's my offer.

Plus, as an added bonus, you get a GOM 2007 Pre-gift just for stopping by! It's a cover of my choosing, admittedly, but given last year's list, I hope you find it suitable. :)

last year i swore this off because every year it disintegrates into a bitchfest (although last year i did help out calfborg, who eventually won, so that was cool). and last year was no different, with eddie bangs in fact swearing off songfight altogether (again....he, love you eddie!).

no disrespect to eddie or niv, who work hard on this, but really, anyone with a history here knows how the plot plays out every year.

and heather, if i were you, there's no way i would touch this. as long as i've been around here (eons!), nobody has gotten screwed worse than you and phil with this.

if you really want to give someone the gift of music, just cover a song from someone's list unconditionally. king arthur has been doing this for years (giving the gift of music).

you don't need some big contest with rules to give the gift of music. you just need to be motivated to do so.

Didn't a whole bunch of people do like a million covers of Hell Yeahs songs as part of a Hxaro LoveFest? I know it's not the same thing, but I mean, it's not like the Redmons didn't get a whole bunch of SongLove not too long ago. Not making excuses for people who fold on GoM, just saying...

Anyone ever consider making the assignments BEFORE posting the songs? I know it takes away the element of surprise, but if I knew Glenn Case was my guy maybe I wouldn't give him the same list as, say, Jute Gyte. There may be a million reasons for not doing it that way--just chiming in.

I think I would like to do this. It's been a while. My only (minor) gripe is that it seems to be a platform for people to post their four most obscure look-how-hip-I-am favorite tracks and that sometimes makes it difficult and, frankly, less fun for me.

Ooh, here's another idea for THE FUTURE. What if everyone chose four songs they don't particularly like and the coverer's job was to improve it in such a way that would make the cover-chooser happy? Less pressure I think than covering someone's favorite song by their favorite artist. I'm just full of mediocre ideas.

I'll post four songs when I get a chance, but you can add me to the list.

Let me make sure I understand what the GOM is all about.

#1. Everyone that is in, lists 4 songs, which it looks like from major and indi label bands.

#2. The contest host matches up a gifty with a gifter.

#3. They each pick a 1 of the 4 songs from each others list and do a cover of said song.

Is this correct?

Also, what's so great about covering a label bands music? Wouldn't it be better to cover a song by the SF member that you get matched up with?
And another thing, why is it so upsetting if you do a song for someone and don't get one in return? Is it a feeling of rejection or something? I guess I just don't care. But I also appreciate and respect others feelings, so sorry to all that have been denied a return gift in the past.
