Scumshits and scamtards.
I dunno why I even googled 'sven mullet', but I did, and here's a link I found.
http://mp3-search.hu/sven-mullet-0.html
Okay, fine, I think. Someone has a site which crawls the web for mp3 files and compiles them into a linklist. Fine, I can live with that. But click on one of the song links- it takes you to a page where it tells you you have to install an executable file on your system to play the music. Probably a virus/spyware thing for starters, but the real piss-off was that unless you buy the ($29.95) full version of the software, you get short, quality-reduced samples.
I don't want my name associated with this shit. I've always given my tunes away for free, no strings attached. How do I proceed here?

I would suggest contacting them and politely asking them to take you off of their list.
However, noting their scheme...they aren't going to very cooperative.
Then... you hold the copyrights and could lawyer up...so...by calling them and asking them to take you off the play list is your first step. If they do not, then they are violating your copyrights. Right?

I've already patented the act of Googling "sven mullet," so I'm entitled to at least 70% of any compensation you receive. Unless you'd like to buy the rights from me...

Though note that they didn't strip the "(c) 2003 by Brent Stansfield" off the comment tags of some of mine. Ooops! That might bite them in the butt. A cease and desist letter might work.

yeah, RE-READING your post (this time correctly) I realize that it IS in fact a search engine. I'm not sure HOW you'd get out of their results without getting out of Google Results.
Unless there is some way you can develop a meta tag that tells <b>their</b> crawler to 'go away' (specifically) and even then you'd still have to make a phone call getting them to take you out of their cached results.
If you could get that first step of getting their web crawler to ignore your mp3s...one could assume you could move your mp3 directory or just change the folder name. LEAVING a page with nothing but broken links, you could trick the crawler into removing you from its results. However, this is assuming their search engine even cares about that to begin with. Which it probably doesn't as it's going to redirect user to software anyways.

If you can do that, better to replace your mp3s with the top ten hits of the day and then tip off the RIAA!

They're obviously doing something spammy to get to the top of the search results, and google (at least) has some means for reporting this kind of abuse:

I don't know... I tend to agree just because everything about it already seems shady. However, I see no evidence to a spamming routine. They might just put forth a lot of effort; pay per click, re-submit the site often, list it in directories, link affiliates, and every other legitimate SEO trick. That and 'free mp3' is a beginner's internet search and everyone and their brother has hit that page making it even more popular based on traffic to it alone. (Sort of perpetuates itself)starfinger wrote:They're obviously doing something spammy to get to the top of the search results, and google (at least) has some means for reporting this kind of abuse:

What they are doing is not illegal in any way that I can think of. They are just posting search results as far as I can tell...and then using those search results as a launching pad to purchase, download, and install their product.
If you think about it there isn't anything wrong with that. Google does the same thing except they get direct payment for advertising utilizing EVERYTHING in its search results. (that and when you click on the results you actually navigate to the result's intended destination)
<b>Please note that I'm not defending the practice. I would NOT like to be associated with their scheme either.</b> I'm just admitting that it doesn't appear that there isn't a whole lot we can do about it.

I use a Creative Commons Music Sharing License, which asks for attribution but doesn't allow commercial use, and this is commercial use in order to get people to buy their software (if I understand your take on the site, which I can't access right now anyway). So that sucks.
"For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work."
But the internet is a public place (at least for now) and I choose to make my music public and this kind of stuff happens. I don't know where to take this line of reasoning at this moment, so I'll wait until I check it out tonight.

Thats just it, it's a very gray area. They are using search results in order to get people to buy their software. It just so happens that we end up in those search results. A pretty specific search but technically Google does the same thing. We end up in their search results yet they get people to invest in their company so those results keep coming. GRAY as Gray gets... the perfect shade of gray.(TM?)roymond wrote:I use a Creative Commons Music Sharing License, which asks for attribution but doesn't allow commercial use, and this is commercial use in order to get people to buy their software (if I understand your take on the site, which I can't access right now anyway). one of the spam criteria on the google abuse form has to do with misleading information.. that is definitely the case here, as they are claiming that their product is needed to listen to our free music.
furthermore, there is no way they're getting to the top of the search results listings without doing something shady from google's perspective..

No, they aren't claiming that. They're claiming that you can get those same search results. They are saying...hey to actually play these songs from our initial search results posted here, you'll need to download our stand-alone search engine software. I don't like it either, but that would be their (devil's advocate?) argument.starfinger wrote:one of the spam criteria on the google abuse form has to do with misleading information.. that is definitely the case here, as they are claiming that their product is needed to listen to our free music.

As far as top results go... Shouldn't Gregory Hoblit top out on the search results? I mean, he is the most famous Hoblit , being a hollywood director and all... but somehow Chrystler / Dodge Hoblit auto delear is? (There's nothing Shady here, just good SEO)
http://www.google.com/search?q=hoblit&i ... =firefox-a
Besides, that... just doing a search on -free mp3- and the like doesn't turn them up. It just means that Sven Mullet isn't as popular as that site using him in their search results. (nowhere near the top results when you search Hoblit)
