I once tried to convince Mo that sos should cover this. In response he quit the band and moved to another continent. Well, I'm sure he'll claim that this wasn't really the reason, but I can see right through him.

i didn't understand we had to cover a song for someone. i thought we just put up 4 good songs we'd like to hear covered. you guys can ban me or whatever you want, that is a grave mistake. i feel quite badly about this.
is there any way i can get taken off this? i don't want to not do it and have left someone musicless

So is it like, legal to upload the originals and post them? I won't get fined by the RIAA or something ;-) Not all of mine are on youtube.

I cannot let another year go by without joining in on the fun. Count me in. I've pretty much narrowed the list down to these four songs (with the selection process likely influenced by spending most of this past weekend in San Francisco at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival).

Daniel Lanois - The Maker
Kathleen Edwards - In State
Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby
Patty Griffin - Rain

Led Zeppelin - Out on the Tiles
The Velvet Underground - That's the Story of My Life
Jonathan Richman - Lydia
Etienne de Rocher - Big Black Wall

EDIT: links added.

Ehhh... Your risk is lowish, I'd say, but I'm with you on not wanting to risk the ire of the RIAA. I'm happy to act as third party messenger on your behalf! So, people of Songfight, if someone pulls Jeff's name out of the hat, contact me, and I'll work with him to get the files sent directly to you. (He'll send 'em to me, I'll forward them on) I'm also happy to do this for anyone else who has tough-to-find selections.

I'm happy to do this, 'cause I'm also a scaredy cat where the RIAA is concerned, and it's very likely I'll have to do the same thing with my semi-obscure (? I really didn't think they were THAT obscure) musics.

I've been making Niv do this for me, since he presumably already knows who to send the links to. I'm pretty sure he said this was okay at some point but I may have just imagined it.

I'm okay with being the go-between.

Have you ever given someone a mix CD or mixtape? According to the RIAA, that's a capital offense.

Giving someone a mixtape is a crime?????? Balderdash!

(Plus it's part of a coverfight covering copyrighted material. It may be non-profit but it's being released on the web. Someone could make a case about that too.)

The main reason I'm concerned about doing it is because my webhosting is being provided to me by a friend in high places, for free, and if I did anything bad with it he might get in trouble along with me.

I found "Jet Boy Jet Girl" on youtube, only it's periodically interrupted by German sketch comedy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQlsfsypBi8

Just search for "jet boy jet girl" and you'll find a number of versions, including Captain Sensible and/or The Damned. (Which is the first version I heard anyway)

Also "Sunrise (Come My Way)" is on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaCGS46qFnc

Oddly, nobody ever seems to get in trouble for posting videos to youtube, even though the audio track of the video essentially *is* an MP3. Or at least not enough people get in trouble for it that you hear about it as something to be wary of. So, if you want to post an mp3 somewhere for free, just use some freeware video editing software to make a one-frame "video" for it..
