episode iii : revenge of the sith

This is how I heard the nine-part story went down: Back when the original movie was this gigantic hit, he was interviewed and said that it was actually part of a 6-part story, and that who knows, he could even continue it to nine parts, though that was never planned. Since then, the nine-part idea has turned into fact, and Lucas has come out saying that he has no plans to make any more after this.

However, once he dies and the vultures go after the rights to the story, you bet someone is going to try to squeeze out 7, 8 and 9, or even 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, etc., etc.

That book is supposed to be great. I loved Starship Troopers because of its sarcastic hung-ho nationalism. I found myself laughing at [with] all the little propaganda snippets, how the military demonizes an enemy defending itself, and the brainless Aryan heroes. I walked out of the theatre smiling.

I watched the movie again a few months ago and realized, to my horror, that all the sarcastic touches I had loved may not have been intentional after all. I knew the book was full of social commentary on superpowers and how they wield their manifest destiny, but then I realized that this movie was from the director of Showgirls, RoboCop, and Hollow Man. Hmm...

Oh, and while I'm off topic, Belle > Ariel >> Jasmine.

Regardless of the attitude behind the book, the director knew full well the kind of mood he was creating. This is his only good movie, sure, but it's still a good movie.

That said, I know pretty much nothing about the book.

That's not unforgivable. I once dated a girl who was in love with Wedge Antilles, a man with like 35 seconds of screen time in the original series. As for Ewan McGregor (to dip into this thread's other discussion) that's justified because he is decidedly "Hot", no matter what your definition of the word is.

Jim: Maybe. In a perfect world Lucas would just approve the storyboard and produce the special effects, and he'd leave the directing to someone else. For instance, Empire Strikes Back was directed by one of Lucas's film teachers from college who actually knew what he was doing. George could get these done if he just took a back seat in the process; However, they might be brutally bad.

Look, Empire Strikes Back is indisputably the best of the Star Wars films. It's also the only one that Lucas neither screenwrote nor directed. The correlation is clear.

Whatever you say about Lucas's direction he did two things we should all be grateful for.
1) He started Industrial Light and Magic without which the special FX industry wouldn't be where it is today
2) He started THX (ditto the above but sound)
3) The Raiders of the Lost Ark trilogy which ROCKS! Though admittedly making part four is pushing it a bit.

That's very, very disputable. It had a few great pieces, but the third act of ESB is the closest the first movies ever got to feeling like Ep 1 and 2. Namely, muddled and dull as hell.

Yes, it too is my favorite of the bunch. But that doesn't discredit 4 or 6 though. In fact, without 4..there'd be no 5. Also, a lot of people were disapointed AT THE TIME with Empire Strikes Back..it's only now can we really go back and decide that it's our favorite. Of course, I always like the idea of bad guys winning in my movies every once and a while. It's that dip into reality that really sells it to me.

when the a new hope "special edition" was released, i bought the new CD version of the soundtrack (had LONG since worn out the 8-track copy of the original!), which was a double disc set, and included pretty much everything, including the second cantina song. if you're interested maybe i could send you an mp3 of it...

Um, Bill, that was like, the point. Heavy-handed satire is still satire.

And Starship Troopers is a frickin' excellent film. I own no Star Wars DVDs but I do own ST on DVD.

The book's not that different, really. Bugs in Space is still Bugs in Space.

And ESB is ok. Its dynamics are a bit screwed up from being filmed back to back with RotJ. It's easy to go 'oh it's a bit dark it has to be the best' but it's actually far too episodic, with a pretty cheesy ending, truth be told. It can not be seen as a seperate entity to RotJ imo, and people who distinguish it in value terms from 4 or 6 are cheating.

That said, obviously ep 4 is the 'best'. Before Lucas started changing it.

It's being discussed... last I heard, a year ago..they were full on with the intent of making this film.

More than being discussed. The release date is set for 2005/6 in the US
Indiana Jones IV Premise/Synopsis:
The continuing saga of archaeologist Indiana Jones. Plot is unknown as so many writers have been attached to the film. Some rumours have said that the fiilm could be set toward the end of Indy's life in the 50's or 60's, but again nothing is confirmed.

On BS:G I stand by two things. The first episode of BG (well the combined two-parter which became the movie) is good. It just ran out of steam in a Voyager way. When you set the purpose of a programme to be trying to get somewhere, you can never let them reach it for as long as the programme runs. Which leads to frustration.

Second thing - is the new Battlestar Galactica showing over there yet? We're a two-part movie and 6/7 episodes of the series in, and with some major reservations, it's actually (whisper it) pretty damn good. [spoiler] they're not even pretending earth exists [/spoiler]

for anyone who owns the new DVD set, i'm curious.
is it only special edition, or do you get the option of original flavour too?
i have both versions of the trilogy on VHS, and unless the DVDs combine the two in one package, or they have some really kick-ass must-have special bonus features, i don't see the point to shelling out the $$ for that right now. maybe i'll change my mind once the tapes start wearing out, or once the whole hexology is available on DVD or something.

I believe that the Lucas party line is that Eps 4-5-6 will never be released on DVD in their original form.

crap.
i know when i bought the original trilogy, a while before a new hope was re-released, it was advertised as "available for the last time in its original form" (all cryptic-like, because they hadn't yet announced that they were going to fuck the movies all up) but i was hoping they were lying about that.
