I won't get to all of these before heading north to VT tonight, but here are a few:

<b>c hack</b> - Wow! This bursts my bubble of your serious-core guy-and-guitar sound. This just sounds so comfortable. Well paced, whitty and fun, even for a less-than-enthusiastic Starwars fan like me.

<b>The Jet Eye</b> - This would be fine without all the Starwars (and other) samples. But I guess that was the point.

<b>Steven Bellinski</b> - I don't give a shit, either. Clever and fun but a one-listen joke.

<b>Willie Green</b> - As far as low-core Starwars rap goes, this is pretty cool. I like the pre-delay on the vocals the second verse. I guess it's there all along, but that works real well.

<b>X-Tokyo</b> - Nice percussion textures. Glad you're bustin out vocally. The varying treatments would otherwise become tiredsome but with you're stuff it works really well. And that right channel guitar is really sweet. One of my favorites from Tokyo. That percusion track is awesome!

<b>Caravan Ray</b> - Nice enough and well produced but I wish for a greater dynamic range and use of tension somewhere. Just doesn't take me anywhere.

<b>Ken's Super Duper Brothers</b> - Ahhh the Lucus Waltz. Of the narative songs you acheive a great balance in dynamic and energy. Can't say much else. Nice ride end to end. Thanks.

Guitar is meant to be grating. Melodies are actually quite clever, just buried in swathes of effects. It's slightly depressing that people enjoy my voice here more than on my own songs ;)
I also recommend you incorporate the girl voice somewhere again, in addition to Johnny.

CR: So uuuuugly! I'm sure you didn't mean for this to be a Violent Femmes song, but I wish it was one anyways. Chorus is cute, harmonies are out of tune. You spent the time to do them, why not do them until they're right? How about a smidge of delay on those vox?

C Hack: The tiniest bit ham-fisted, but an excellent delivery. I wouldn't call it rap or hiphop or whatever - it fits much more in line with spoken-word specialists like Hammel On Trial or, to a lesser extent, King Missile. The monologue at the end about the fans owning the thing, tho.. I dunno.. I disagree with the sentiment, and it ruins the humor. Lots of nits about an excellent tune. BTW, our neighbor loaned us the Firefly DVD set, so of course we had to kick off our viewing with a listen to your AAD.

Jeteye: meh. I dunno, it might be a song, it might be a good excuse to record some stuff.

NOTM: Wow, you've really fattened up your sound since last listen I had. I'd prefer all those tone-ruining guitar effects be turned down until they're just the tiniest dash of seasoning on the sound - remember the lesson of 1995: Everything Alex Lifeson did sucked.

Kenniumus: This has a nice, sweet tone when turned all the way up in my headphones. Still wanna hear a little more bus compression to mesh those voxes into the music.

Phunt: ass

StephenB: Talentless flubbery. Write a goddamn song already.

MCz WD Greenz: Beat was interesting, rapping is shit.

Wreckdom: Well maybe you've learned something about how being funny is cooler than being retards. Vocals UP, noisey shit DOWN. Humor UP, inaudbile samples OUT. This is shit.

X-TX-MOTU: Musically interesting, but repetitive and casio-laden. If this were hand-performed I'd call it genius.

Well, one person jumped out of the box and really attacked the title, one person put his usual good skills to work and presented a compelling song, and the rest of you turned in the same stuff you turn in every week.

Do something different next week. I'm voting C Hack in a squeaker over Ken.

As far as the song goes, I agree that it falls off in the 2nd verse -- not b/c of the sentiment, though; I think Noah said it well: it loses its energy. I had a hard time figuring out where to go with it, but I like the point I'm arguing -- once you give something up to the public, especially if it's something so much based on collective mythology like Star Wars is, it's like the public owns part of it, and it really seems wrong to fuck with it and not release any original versions.

The vocals on this are bloody awful! I should have listened to this before posting it. This song was mainly done as an exercise to learn how Garageband works – nice to see some of you noticed the huge jump in sound quality over my previous entries.
Songwise – this was pretty much a shameless combination/rip-off of “Pictures of Lily” by The Who and “Lee Remick” by the Go-Betweens. Re-recorded with better vox and a general tightening up all round – I think I’ll be very happy with it.

Verdict:
I really couldn’t slip a bee’s dick between the Jet Eye and X-Tokyo River God – I love both of those. I think I’ll vote for XTRG, for no real reason other than it’s not as novelty-songish (not that there’s anything wrong with a novelty song)

Nice bass tone! I like the upbeatness of this. While I don't mind the drum sounds (kik/snare) I find it too mechanical sounding...and that has to do with the hats programming/sound. The whole mix is a bit flat...maybe some ambience could be used to liven it up...like a nice subtle room verb for the main elements to share. Love the line 'pictures of Natalie Portman' This is a pretty good tune, just the right length. Nice work CR.

C Hack
Great great great vocal delivery. I don't find the tightness of the talky bits are well supported by the singy bits 'cuz they aren't as tight in delivery and pitch. Backing music is a great canvas for them though. The mix is pretty good, bass very well represented. I like the falsetto. Good job man!

The Jet Eye
Awesome fun. Thanks for having me along Jack, great job on this track. I'm not a big fan of vocal samples, but you done real good with these ones.

Jim Tyrell
I like this already on account of the chords. It's almost too serious for the title. The mix is a bit thin in the tricky midrange.. Good drum programming. (if they were programmed). Nice length..vocals to thin and quiet. Great tune Jim.

Ken's Super Stuff
Wow...great drum sounds. On my system the bass guitar is a little light in the mix, but lots of room left for the kik which sounds good. Love the acoustic guitar sound. Nice use of the stereo field. Not much to critique here. Very well recorded, well written, nice sounding piece of music. It moves nicely. I don't really dig the way you sing this..kind of deadpan, over enunciated, but that's a minor gripe. Nice.

This is awesome. Love the Cashpoint vox. LIke the guitar samply stuff... I find the mix to be thing, no meat. I want meat. I want thump. Less air, more thump. Otherwise this cooks. Nice changes. Fresh sounding. Love that guitar samply thing...heh. Not big on the ending.



This was a surprisingly good fight. Thanks everyone. Here's how I'm feelin' it right now:

For musicality, I like Jim's best. For originality, X-Tokyo tags it. Sonically, Ken's Superstuff BandandDuper owns it. C Hack shocks me with his wordsmithin'. Sample tactics mastered by Jet Eye. Vote = ? , gonna be a tough one.

stephen bellinski: inoffensive so far. Bell sound is kinda cheesy, but that's alright. Okay, "I don't give a shit about star wars" was cute the first time you said it, and it deteriorated exponentially after that. Put some effort into the song next time, and maybe it'll end up being worth something.

x-tokyo river god: this must be J$. Damn, you're getting good. This feels like it could be Bowie, from the era I don't like at all. The song isn't really doing anything for me, but maybe if it was an in-between song on a really good album, I could dig it. CONTENDER

phunt: wtf? If I wrote a program to make random sounds and mix them in with random samples from TV, its output would probably be better than this, definitely not worse.

willie d. green: good effort. Writing rap lyrics is really hard. The delivery is better than most rappers here, but still sounds amateurish. Here's what you need: a chorus. A melody. Check out Eminem. Song structure is very traditional, for the most part. Verse/chorus, etc. Remember this: "the chorus: it's what makes songs fun."

jet eye: sounding very professional to start out with... cool... don't think I like the way the acoustic guitar sounds in the mix, but all the other instruments sound GREAT. Now just give me a cool chorus... Damn, you didn't give it to me. Still really like it though. It'd make a cool song if you reworked and got rid of all the star wars stuff. Yeah this has serious potential. CONTENDER

jim tyrell: good stuff. doesn't really go a lot of places, but it's like a fun little song. Perfect length. CONTENDER

wreckdom: hey, it's nice to see you gave up the flatulence humor. I got bored with this about halfway through, which isn't bad, considering.

ken: sounds nice. I like the fact that you have a chorus, but it's not very memorable. Song feels pretty much by-the-books with respect to like, chord changes and stuff. Not really grabbing me. Still, it's done well. CONTENDER

caravan ray: has a very amateurish sound. Great chorus though. Okay, even though the production is bad and your voice is pretty bad too and the lyrics are nothing special, I can see myself humming "pictures of natalie portman," and that gives it enough points to make it a CONTENDER

c hack: chorus needs to change. Lose the rock, more hip hop. 2nd verse needs to have as much energy as the 1st. I really like it up until the first chorus, then it falls apart. If I was gonna do this over again, I'd keep everything up till then and start the rest over from scratch.


conclusion: nothing is really calling out to me as being amazingly better than the rest. X-tokyo's is really good for what it is, but I'm not crazy about what it is, so that's out. Ken, Jim, and Caravan Ray's are all regular songs. Jim's and Ray's are more memorable than Ken's, and Jim's is a solid decent song, but I'm just a sucker for a catchy chorus, and I'm smiling now when I sing "pictures of natalie portman" to myself. So it's between him and Jet Eye.

Jet Eye wins because the production kicks ass and it has so much potential. I'd really like to see this redone without and samples or star wars references. And a cool chorus.
