I'm happy to rename the thread if this title is too groan inducing.

ken
this is kind of a cool waltz arrangement. bring up those high harmonies in the chorus, i hear them but barely. is that your rhodes i hear back there too? very nice. the bridge works nicely but i almost wish it came about 30-40 seconds earlier.

caravan ray
hehe, the drums sound too perfect to be real. it's got a nice little smiths sort of feel for it, with the chorused guitar. you are a dirty old man sir. :)

c hack
the intro setup sounds kind of awkward but comes together with the organ, and the flows are pretty good. the way you occasionally double it too works well. now this would have been really cool if you'd low passed that chorus to sound like it was coming out of a beatbox or something. i really like the percussive stuff you have going on, and the singing stuff is really well done from a trip hop sort of perspective.

x tokyo river god
damn, is that cashpoint all effected up? thats some weird shit that is. the beats are pretty good on this. definitely some interesting moments here. i could see bowie doing something like this back in his lets dance/scary monsters phase.

the jet eye
this is me, with power flow by Pavlov's Dawg aka The Hip Cola.

stephen bellinski
i take it you don't really give a shit about star wars.

jim tyrell
i'm digging on the progression, wish the guitars were mixed a bit better, or less compressed i should say. you get big points for the passion and the emo delivery. this is really well done. nice little turnarounds too. but the whole mix definitely sounds real compressed, if this had more room to breathe it would rock.

willie d. green
the backing mix is ok, has potential, but your raps leave something to be desired. it's like you're trying to sound tough and trying to sound nerdy and you need to pick or choose cause both just sounds dumb.

wreckdom
now wreckdom, those guys know how to pick one or the other. they don't need to sound tough. those hairy ass cracks are tough. i kind of like this, or parts of it anyways.

Caravan Ray - Oh, comedy club music! (by which I mean that most dread of images - the stand-up comic who pulls out his guitar ) 'Pictures of Natalie Portman' makes me smile a lot. Some of the ryhmes I could see coming in so fast I was wincing. I love the Na-na-nas too. Maybe 30 seconds too long? This is nice production, I have decided, although maybe this sort of song could do with a little treble boost, to excite up the track a little?

C Hack - Yeah, I like this. nice bass tone. very nice. Good flow, more or less. i like the chorus (but I would drop the falsetto 'George Lucas' backing vox there cos they make it sound a little too chaotic/formless). I like it. Kind of wants samples I think.

Jet Eye - This reminds me in an odd way of Loaded by Primal Scream. great organ. Too many samples - all good but a bit top-heavy - I want some rapping. Ah there it is - Pavlov's Dogg should have come in much earlier. This is all really good but the first 1.30 feels like an intro to the last minute which is the wrong way round, in my book. Still I like it a lot.

Jim Tyrell - Is that percussion marching stormtroopers? It sounds really flangey/flammy. It's the only distracting thing in an otherwise great tune, with a good late 70s rock feel to it. I could imagine Fleetwood Mac, or maybe that era Yes, doing it. And you really sound like George has been a bastard to you personally. Does he owe you money, or something? :)

Ken et al - I don't really feel the George Lucas aspect to this (although it doesn't say anywhere that this George Lucas has to be that george Lucas I guess!) I can't really criticise anything about the music - it has a nice swing feel to it, perhaps a little plodding for my tastes - but not in a bad way, just not a me way. I just kind of thing this is more of a gay love song for some bloke called George than you intended it to be????

Stephen Bellinski - So how is George going to break your heart then? instant disqualification due to not actually having anything to do with the title :) Nice music if you like 'Walking in Memphis' style stuff. (sorry I can't remember the artist, I'm not trying to imply it's a rip-off or anything)

Willie D Green - I like this. it's slightly amateurish, but that just adds to the enjoyment for me. 'The same f**king mother' indeed! It made me smile. If you meant to make me smile, good job. If you're more serious, then it didn't come across so well.

Wreckdom - If this was a bag of frogs, there's a couple in there that I would take home and care for at the Johnny Cashpoint Home for Distressed Frogs. The rest I would fire from a catapult onto the freeway.

X-Tokyo River God - it's a great drum groove. Guitar sample comes (originally) from the Au Pairs' 'You'. I'd just watched 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. The mumbled stuff at the beginning and the end is 'Greedo did not pull gun first'.

Hmmm, that was a surprisingly good fight (ie I expected the title would induce a whole bunch of lameness, of which there was none.) I'll think on the vote for a while.

Fast run through. Note that I already have tix for the midnight showing.

Caravan Ray - I can relate but the price of hard drives have gone down quite a bit so I'm not having to part with my pics of SMG. As for the song itself, I felt like lighting incence and eating some fungus I found growing under some cow shit. Not my style but good production.

c hack - Sorry, I don't like rap. The chorus is kind of neat. I listned to the whole thing, it was alright. The lyrics kept my attention.

The Jet Eye - Oh shit, there's too much going on...and I'm in a church at the same time?!?

Jim Tyrell - The passion! The intensity! The vote!

Ken's Super Duper Band n' Stuff - Points for the band name. At 1:20 I started skipping through the song looking for a change. I didn't find it. If there was, I would have liked it better. Hmm, not really helpfull advice...

Stephen Bellinski - There's 2 other fights if you don't give a shit. I laughed though..

Willie D. Green - Hmm, rap again. Catchy. Fun. Not too many samples.

WreckdoM - I love you guys, you are the definition of Adult ADD.

x-tokyo-river-god - Well, you delivered what I expected. Take that for good or bad.

Good fight guys!
Electrocushin - Shockingly Uncomfortable

george! (which reminds me of a french comic, but i digress...) let the post-modern cross-media references begin!

i have to say, overall, the production is crystal-clear for everybody. kudos!

caravan ray
- love the line about deleting pics of sarah michelle gellar
- the music is poppy and bop-along, which is very fitting to the lyrical mood
- some of the vocal harmonies seem a little off or at least forced
- really like the "na-na" coda

c hack
- the opening rap is really good and the music is perfect for it
- ... but i love kick-ass yoda! :-)
- the second verse isn't as rhythmically-driven, so the song loses that tense energy it had in the frist verse

the jet eye (haha!)
- the use of samples is great (though i think some of the jar-jars aren't from the movie); i love watto.
- the rap is good, but its just a tad too buried; bring it up in the mix

jim tyrell
- i like the rhythm guitar
- there's some odd flange on those drums; robo drums? they seem too organic for that, but are still over-processed
- repetive; the first verse is promising, but the chorus goes on for too long; how about a solo?

ken's super duper band n' stuff
- i like the vocal harmonies in the chorus
- seems a little languid, tho; either not enough speed or not enough tension
- despite the bridge, this still seems repetitive; maybe it's just the pacing thing

stephen bellinski
- haha! nice ironic use of the title
- the guitar seems a little distant; not muddy, but just not close enough to the mike
- pretty vocal harmonies

willie d. green
- what's with the unusually high amount of rap in this fight? is the possibility to sample more freely or just the way that rap can easily be humorous?
- competent, but not particularly original or driving

wreckdom
- i knew you'd be on this
- where did you dig up this read-along vinyl?! too cool
- however, i really don't like the chorus; is this like a metaphor for lucas movies: really, really good parts, are great idea that's totally blown by one really reall awful bit?
- howard the duck?! hahaha! man, i love that movie, it's so bad it's good.

x-tokyo-river-god
- i really like the litle electronic blips in the background, and whatever effect you put on the drums is a nice touch
- the speed-up for the bridge doesn't come off too well, which is my fault with the drum programming
- the coda seems kind of turgid and useless (i hate to say); i feel like there should be something more there, like a last little guitar explosion or something

Jim Tyrrell

+ Great sound
- Maybee a little too much energy for accompanying music

C Hack

+ Cool music change up and great voice
++ Hmmm... still early in the week but maybee a contender
+++ Very enjoyable (thanks for not feeling the urge to cuss :))

Stephen Bellinski

+++ Great music
++++ Great voice
--- Should have used your talent to write a song that matched your musical talent
--- minus "You don't give a SHIT about Star Wars" and you got a great song

X-Tokyo River God

++ Can't stop listening since the depressing girl voice is gone
+ Kinda cool, great sound and production
+ Wildest voice I've ever heard

The Jet Eye

++ Really Really Cool stuff here
+++ Definitly a keeper
+ Hahaha this song just gets better as you listen
- Not sure where George is breaking anyones heart here?

Caravan Ray

+ Cool tune
++ Song gets better toward middle
+ Actually plays on the theme w/great dynamics
-- Too many Natalie Courtmans...

Willie D. Green

tell you what.... i'll try to care a whole lot more next week... maybe twice as much, and we'll see how that turns out.

maybe i'll rework this masterpeice.

as for reviewing, i'll have to go back and listen to them again... i made it thru all of them last night, but didn't pay attention to each one. I just turn them off when something started to bug me.

examples:

the rap. since when did nerd rap about jedis and stuff become cool? Nerd rap wasn't cool on Reading Rainbow, not cool now.

the samples: there was at least one song (maybe 2... i'll look into it) that was almost all samples. i don't think aranging samples makes an original song as much as putting a puzzle together doesn't make you Picasso. Sorry if thats harsh.

I'm not trying to pick a fight and... yes, i realize that i have little room to speak, as my song this week, left little to be desired about. (cause its not a whole idea of a song, but a riff that i've held on to for years, with a stupid line over it.) AND WHAT's WITH THOSE STUPID FAKE STRINGS AT THE BEGINING OF IT???? sorry.

doood. who said nerd rap was cool? Maybe it's the inherent uncoolness of it that people are going for.... I dont' remember seeing anyone say it was cool. So I don't get yer point. Other than you don't like nerdy sounding rap. And that's cool... :):

And as for samples on songs making a song...of course...those are like icing bro..not the cake. How could you slag SW samples in a title like this? HOW?

No fight pickin' goin on. You gotta stand for what you believe..reviews are only about YOU man...your opinion only. Just be ready to defend your views if someone else thinks they suck.

keep on reviewing man!

well, i guarantee i have more "live" tracks in my song than you do, and i'm sure that my song (the jet eye) is undoubtedly one of the songs you were referring to, as it features gratuitous use of samples from the movies. in your song, the drums sound completely MIDI. how much better is that? on my tracks, there are 5 seperate tracks of live electric guitar, and 13 vocal tracks that i recorded live, not even counting the hip cola's vocal tracks. i'll cop to the fact that i don't own a hammond, but the leslie/tonewheel gives me a woody, so i'll take it any way i can get it.

working with samples is an art form in and of itself, and i look at artists like future boy, undesirable, johnny cashpoint as being seriously brilliant in the art of working with samples. it doesn't mean thats all they do. just because you paint, doesn't mean you only work with oils, or watercolors. you paint in whatever medium floats your boat at the time. you mix your mediums. because ultimately, to me anyways, the brilliance comes from the vision and the ability to communicate that, by whatever means necessary.

hehe, okay. The gracious fightmaster put my song up even though it was late. I'm not Phunt; don't tell., so I'm not exactly entering for the votes. But, here and there, people actually review what I submitted before.

This might actually work out better than usual. If you absolutely hate me and wish my computer would explode while I was sitting nearby, you don't even have to listen to the first five seconds of my song. If you want to hear it, you can go back and click-clicky.

Thanks for putting up with me, everybody. Or at least, thanks for not blowing up my computer while I'm sitting nearby.

Ok Egg, you asked for it...

I listened to your last weeks submission probably 50 - 100 times (didn't really get it but it was interesting). So I've got to say it sounds pretty much the same as last week??? Who is that talking and what is your goal? Enlighten me so that I can listen with a little more interrest, 'caus last week was much better.

If you submitt next week please change it up a bit and give more than just the voice trying to make reason... Last week I actually listened, but this week I don't know if I can...

Phunt; don't tell : hmmm...montage.

Caravan Ray : Vocals could benefit from some good compression...bass sucks. This reminds me of Wesley Willis...minus the awesome.

The Jet Eye : Yey...a clip show...err...song. The music started off cool, oh, actually singing...not too bad...cut out all the sound clips...or at least use them in a way that looks like there was some thought in the placement.

Jim Tyrrell : maybe its just a bad mp3 encoding...but it sounds really washy. I like the song,,,just not the recording. The acoustic guitar is brutal, and the bass is really muddy. Decent singing thou, should be more up front.

WreckdoM : Sounds good...good stereo spread. Cool sounds. I didn't completely understand what was going on thru most of the song, but Love the ending. (VOTE)

Stephen Bellinski : Is that a Goo Goo Dolls song? Your message might have been more efficient, if you didn't use such lame music.

Ken's Super Duper Band n' Stuff : I like the drum sound...but that incessant cymbal hit is bugging me. I might have to stop listening...okay...this sucks.

c hack : Chorus is alright...work on vocals...I don't like the verses. You free advertising slut. You overlapping lyrics don't seem to work.

Willie D. Green : Okay...I've had enough...what is it with Star Wars nerds and rap music. You beat is uninteresting.

x-tokyo-river-god : Some interesting sounds. I bit shrill, not counterbalanced with bass.

okay...with all the rap, and crappy samples...why didn't anyone do anything cool/creative with using Star Wars SFX as part of the beat...Sound Clips are LAME X10.

Thanks to anybody who is taking time to listen and I hope that you can enjoy it every now and then.

Phunt; don't tell.'s previous entry was under Pasty White Man.
The collaborative effort Phunt Your Friends submitted last week under A&A.

This week, I made this little ditty for DBMHA,GL with some weird concept of a cover in mind. This is definitely harder to listen to than any of the other Phunt stuff that's been submitted and sounds the closest to a bad sound collage, but I think it's worth a listen because it has the weirdest cover (if you'll call it that) of the Imperial March ever. The entry I made with my friend (in Phunt Your Friends) for Scissor Kick is pretty much just a sound collage. And I'm not that happy with it. To answer another question, there's a bit by our favorite lecturer, some George Lucas justifying himself and then some more of the lecturer.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked the last entry you heard. I agree that it was better. I thought this was worth submitting for that feedback "cover."
