I'm with Jim Tyrrell. PM me if you want me to cover one of your songs. Tell me which one or I'll just pick one. Don't be surprised though if I throw out everything but the lyrics, and even rearrange/edit/supplement those.

Well now that I know what this thread is actually about, I like it alot.
To answer Hoblitt's question, the idea of covering my songs was mine. There was a thread in the sidefights forum about a different user who was requesting a sidefight about his songs, and I chimed in saying if anyone deserved it that I did. And then I guess whoever that other guy was who started this up did his thing. But I have no idea who he is.
I got an email from someone asking for my vocals without music to use as part of his cover. I just want to tell everyone what I told him just in case anyone else wanted it. I don't save my vocals when I perform. I save the music without the words seperatly but not the other way around. I'm sorry.

As the person who first brought the concept of hxaro to Songfight, I have a suggestion.
TAKING BACK HXARO
Okay folks, instead of some big organized gathering for one person, how about this. Anyone who wants to has two weeks in which to do some sort of hxaro for someone else on the board. Whether that hxaro is in the form of a cover, a new song dedicated to that person, a remix, making them a logo, et cetera, is up to the giver. Does it matter if the person has already gotten a hxaro gift before? No. All that matters is that you feel like you wanna give a gift to someone. Everyone has two weeks. So friday, May 26th would be the deadline. Everyone would send their hxaro gifts to me and on May 27th, I'll put up a website over at my webspace where everyone can enjoy the hxaro. And this event would be without discussion over who deserves hxaro, who got invited, etc. If you wanna participate then participate. Pick whomever you wanna give a gift too. If you wanna give numerous gifts, it's okay. Hxaro is supposed to be about building the bonds of a community through gift giving. And all this quarrel over the idea of a Rone hxaro is purpose defeating. So let's take back hxaro.

I Like it. I've gotten cover requests from a few people, and I'm gonna try to do 'em all for the 26th.
NUR ALLE!

It seems to me that organizing it is anti-hxaro. it encourages selfish motives by providing a venue for glorifying the one giving the gift.
if you really wanted to be hxaro, shouldn't you just privately send it to the recipient and not tell anybody?
i mean, if you wanted to be a purist or something.

Purism is overrated.

so what's the point of taking it back?

I'm boycotting purists.

Your band may be included in the WebWide Boycott against the sponsors of Hxaro form.
In other words, we will purchase no products (CD's, comics, ect.) or services (concerts or events that Songfight artists participate in) until Rone Rivendale excuses the Songfight forums from this Hxaro.
We will then return to childish name-calling and bickeribng so that the forum and it's users can experience a maximum benefit.
This is a great post. Kudos to you.

setting a deadline sort of instills a sense of obligation, doesn't it?
in the original spirit it seemed like it should just be an ongoing, random thing. not trying to piss on your parade or whatever, though.

Okay allow me to edit my too-short-to-be-clear statement.
Having a place to do hxaro doesn't defeat the purpose of hxaro. When I first learned about hxaro, it was a part of college assignment for cultural anthroplogy class. We all brought in gifts and tried to emulate the Dobe Ju/'hoansi and their hxaro system. Of course, it was slightly different because you knew there would be giftgiving during a given peroid of the semester but it still was good to get gifts unexpectedly from people. And when it was all said and done, I made a bunch of new friends and it brought the whole clas together. So my idea is taking my teacher's way of implementing hxaro within our class and doing it here within Songfight. It's not going to be just like the way the Dobe Ju/'honsai do their hxaro system but it doesn't have to be. The hope is for hxaro to help build bonds within the community and if a slightly different version of hxaro brings on the same end result then it's still a good thing.

i'm anti-purist too. I was getting the impression that that's what Niv was trying to accomplish. I also agree with tviyh regarding deadlines.
Anybody else want me to agree with them? I'm easy*.

but don't we already have a place? and an established, though questionably authentic, history of actually doing this?
Suggesting a hxaro sidefight (whether or not you want to call it that) seems to perpetuate that which you are trying to "take it back" from.
but hey, I don't actually even care. I'm just finally getting the hang of inflating my post count by perpetuating silly discussions. what comes after coal cracker?

I have no problem with organization of hxaro. It was organized when I first did it in class. The thing that got me about this thread was the fact that people were upset about the choice of who was getting the hxaro. So I suggested a hxaro event where it's give to whoever you want.
In my class, there was no regulations of who gives gifts to who. It wasn't everyone gives a gift to Bobby day on Tuesday and a gift for Jamie day on Friday. No, you chose who you wanted to give the gift to. If you wanted to during the hxaro time, you could just give gifts to one person in hopes of better building your bonds with that one person. But if you did, you were also missing out on an opportunity to connect with the community. By suggesting an event like I did, I'm hoping to spread the hxaro giftgiving. More people would get chances at gifts and participating and more bonds would be created. I think that's closer to hxaro than what we were doing before where the whole community was showering one person with gifts. That's a tribute, not a hxaro.
(As I inch closer to Flume status.)

my feeling is that there shouldn't be a hxaro for Rone Rivendale or for Jolly Roger, as they both asked for covers of their songs. Hardly an act of unexpected genorosity (oops, another word for the 'i can't spell' thread) - sidefight, sure, if people want to do that.
But I'm no hxaro daddy.

I think that's why we used to have that Wish List thread. That's for asking for covers and the like.
