Thank you everyone for taking the time to consider my really very silly song, and thank you some of you for actually enjoying it! That makes me happy. Those of you who do not enjoy it, well, I certainly do understand.

BBABM, I love punk (and alternative), too...unfortunately, I don't really have the voice/guitar skills/writing style for that kind of music so much, so sometimes I sound country even though I REALLY don't want to. But I do happen to cover three Violent Femmes songs and I think I'm not too shabby on those...they are one of my fave bands. You heard of them? If not, check them out...they were amazing. I think Add it Up and Kiss Off are probably two of their best.

Been listening to the songs, it is a really good crop this week. The overall quality of songfight has improved a lot over the many years I have been losing here. Votes to:

Thanks for the Frisbee (favorite vocals)
DJ Ranger Den
King Arthur (favorite arrangement)
Abjure! (favorite songwriting)
gizo

If this was still old style songfight and I could only vote for one, it would probably be flipping a coin between Frisbee and Abjure!

I do have to wonder why the catholic girls are screaming in the bird sanctuary – am I hearing that right? Can you expound, or is this another one I don’t want to know about? Haha
The bird sanctuary was/is a secluded woodsy section of the island where, I was told, the kids who lived on the island would sneak in to do drugs, fool around, and (according to the crazier stories) engage in occult rituals.
Also amusing: she had brown eyes like a doe…funny.
That wasn't supposed to be a joke... I was once in love with a girl whose eyes were the exact shade of brown that you associate with wild animals. It sounds creepy to you probably but it was actually quite endearing.

To be honest, I may have added the foreboding vision to this piece. But Roymond's vision was quite heart felt and precise. It actually moved me enough to get really inspired. Sarcasm yes, but innocence to adulthood, truth....100%!

JB accused me in chat of sounding like Violent Femmes, so I used it in the subsequent song (Had It Up To Here) which then won the fight. So, perhaps they were a secret sauce. I actually don't know if I've ever heard them.

You have probably heard this song in a commercial:

and if you've ever gone to karaoke it's likely you've heard this one:

and a few years ago Gnarls Barkley had a cover of this song which people didn't realize was a cover:

I've heard Blister in the Sun, just never knew who did it. The other two I've never heard.

And, Stop enlightening me! I am blissfully ignorant of much pop music. I guess they're actually "alternative" since he can't sing in tune? Also, I don't know Gnarls Barkley.

That's why I'm alternative. People cringe when they hear me sing. So I say, STOP CRINGING ASSHOLES, I'M ALTERNATIVE! Then they say OHHhhh and smile and their heads start bouncing around like bobble heads.

The Violent Femmes are from Wisconsin.

That is all I have to add to this conversation.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Not to mention their drummer is a maniac... How do you make a single snare sound like a stadium set? We may never know

Violent Femmes are in the same popularity bracket as Pomplamoose - beloved by their fans but pretty much unknown outside of their fanbase (except as "the guys who did that one song, you know, 'I'm high as a kite and I'm gonna check you out' or whatever").

Their studio work sounds less out-of-tune, but live recordings are easier to find on YouTube.

People that have never heard of that band would have a whole new image of Wisconsinites.

It's not easy being cheesy.

Studio version of "Add it Up", with fan-made video:

The acoustic bass on this song is absolutely god-tier.

Yes, I get that. They have a good sound and seems genuinely into what they do. I'm just promoting how out of touch I am, and fishing for such recommendations.

** note to self: re-evaluate self promotion techniques **

Oh no! That means their music is immediately no longer worth listening to!

Good thing the Beatles are still together. I don't know what I'd do if they ever broke up.
