I don't golf (Isle Dauphine reviews)
Apologies if anyone listens with a subwoofer. Just found out. Sometimes I get a little too excited with the sub-bass synth. If the songs aren't up for a while, I may try to correct this.

If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Re: I don't golf (Isle Dauphine reviews)
Hey, I have a late entry that I don't expect to be put into the fight, but I just wanted to share anyway. It wasn't recorded live, but it's almost as good: each instrument only gets one take and the whole thing was written and recorded and mixed in the space of an hour. Man I wish I'd actually done a real song for this fight. I really did have my earliest experiences of canoodling with a girl in the sand dunes next to the Isle Daupine country club on Dauphin Island, Alabama. Redneck paradise.
EDIT: an actual link to the mp3 would be nice:

Pure flvxxvm florxm awesomeness. After struggling with a non-song-fight tune literally all week, i am envious of the one-take production.jeff robertson wrote:http://www.flvxxvmflorvm.com/files/othe ... son_id.mp3

I seem to have neglected to mention the most important thing that makes it similar to a live fight. I was drunk the whole time. Too drunk in fact to take notice that the songs hadn't been posted yet. I would have submitted mine the normal way, or at least waited until the others were posted.

I would like to reiterate that the less than half of the song I played live that you can hear at 14:45 of fluffys video is 3000% better than the crap I have recorded here. Vote for that... And joints

Some pretty awesome songs this round. I think I have to give a shout out to Thanks for the Frisbee for my favourite line of the playlist:

Nice: we have two songs that are superficially similar to Nur Ein "Blame It On Ginger".

I honestly hadn't been following Nur Ein; I can't believe I created something similar to the Merisan's winning entry (which I just checked it out now). They're not identical or anything, but I see what you mean.
Ugh. I wonder if this is what women feel like when they spot someone at the party wearing the same dress as them (and look a hell of a lot better in it).

Oh I meant Frisbee's sounds kind of like WSA's Blame It On Ginger, as does mine sound like mine.

Re: I don't golf (Isle Dauphine reviews)
Hello, I must brace my heart and eyes for your beauty.
Kudos to live song fight attendees. brief reviews.
Manhattan Glutton
Very bubble gum. Good track composition.
Hey it's Romer
Is ok. Parts are diverse but little variation within each makes track seem long.
Billy's Little Stinko
Well produced. It is weird and I am curious on the inspiration.
DJ Ranger Den
Good control in vocal performance
Baker and LSares
Very silly. A little nonsensical and nerd rappy.
The Uncomfortable Project
Cool vibe. I like a little more bite [single coils] or tone [tube head] on the guitar and put it up front in the mix for the style, like muddy. Maybe a tom waits megaphone too.
Thanks for the frisbee
Cool song, good writing, and vocal/melody craft. Thought you were going Matchbox20 on me at the start.
Abjure!
Cool arpeggiator. Funny song too.
EggNogAdam
This could play behind the Isle Dauphine Tourism Board’s welcome VHS tape. Smooth jazz interlude and pan across the seventh hole fairway.
lalabrookie
Very educational.
Jeff Robertson
This song touches my soul. It is sincerely profound.
WreckdoM
Cool mambo on hook, but satire-parody rap annoys me.
gizo
Cool paired down vibe, the kind I like. I wonder how deliberate are the lo-fi-ish vocals, and did you mean to go in the direction. Like a bit rate reducer or distortion.
Sockpuppet
Good song. Coherent piece.
Bad Boys at Bat Mitzvahs
Good performance. If you work at it you get a real mature and unique aesthetic out of your voice. Try to keep out of the young post-punk acoustic singer niche, unless you’re into that.
King Arthur
I also hate the rich, and so I identify with this song.
I love you,
Daring Front

Re: I don't golf (Isle Dauphine reviews)
Time for reviews. Nice to know that lots of people had trouble with this title and it wasn't just me.
Abjure! - The song is still pretty funny but this recording's kind of bad. Muddy vocals, really sloppy drums, and the vocal delivery just makes the jokes feel like they fall flat. I think it would have been better if you just did an acoustic recording along the lines of how you performed it live. The breakdown at the end is just kind of weird too. I wonder how much my listening is affected by having heard the live performance and having been somewhat intoxicated during said performance.
BBABM - You might disagree but I think this sounds WAY better than the live recording. I also realize that I only voted for you in the livefight because of the promise you made (I am still waiting for it) and didn't actually remember the song during the vote. This really needs a bridge section with a kazoo or something.
Baker and LSares - sorry but those sloppily autotuned vocals are disgusting and this is an instant skip. If you're going to autotune your vocals (and you really shouldn't without a good reason) you should at least lock them to the notes that they're supposed to be instead of just letting them float around. Gross.
Billy's Little Stinko - So is the similarity in the intro vocals between this and Roymond's intentional? Or did you both get the same weirdness from a Google search? Nice and energetic, but I have trouble understanding the vocals most of the time.
Daring Front - Nice groove.
DJ Ranger Den - Why didn't you perform this at the livefight? Or did you not have it ready in time? Or was I just too drunk to remember it? Very pretty. v
EggNogAdam - This reminds me of Flaming Lips as performed by Jim of Seattle. I kind of liked it until the saxophone kicked in, and then it just turns into a mess of some sort. There's some sort of weird humor behind the arrangement and production, I suspect, but I can't quite wrap my head around it.
gizo - I like the layered looping thing. Please get a better vocal mic, or EQ your vocals better or something. Atonality works for you, at least. v
Hey it's Romer - I kept on waiting for the actual song to start but it didn't. I believe that a suitable instrumental can be a song but this is not an instrumental, it's just a bunch of loops with rambling spoken words on top that just annoy me. Sorry, it's not you, it's me, in that I don't like your entry.
Jeff Robertson - Clean enough production, dumb and obvious but well-executed pun on the title. Redneck jokes are kind of played out at this point but eh, the bar is low on this fight. v
King Arthur - Eel dolfeen?
lalabrookie - I'm not a fan of ballads with overly-emotive vocals. Also, holy disconnect between the tone of the song and the lyrical content, Batman.
Manhattan Glutton - This is like Generic Pop TV Show Theme #27. But it's well-composed, well-performed, and well-produced, all of which you have a great knack for, so v
Sockpuppet - This is what happens when you wake up at 4 in the morning with a fully-formed song in your head after having given up on the idea of coming up with a song for the livefight. Stop that.
Thanks for the frisbee - Cute, poppy, pleasant enough. v
The Uncomfortable Project - If we were still on a one-vote system I think this would get it. Reminds me of Squirrel Nut Zippers (their good stuff, not the stuff that was on the radio). Who else remembers them? Also Asylum Street Spankers. Good stuff, and exactly the right length. v
WreckdoM - Hi, WreckdoM.
I also want to vote for Roymond but he didn't enter. WTF?

Thanks - the vocals were more lazy than deliberate, and I floundered around trying to find a comfortable effect.Daring Front wrote: gizo

I have no idea what your last sentence means...?
Yes - vocals were via the laptop's built-in Mic.... Yes, I will try harder to open a drawer and grab something next time.fluffy wrote: gizo - I like the layered looping thing. Please get a better vocal mic, or EQ your vocals better or something.
I'm not sure if that's a backhanded compliment there - but it looks like I got a vote, which was more than I thought this was worth - thanks. I'll look deeper for the merit in it.fluffy wrote:Atonality works for you, at least. v

Re: I don't golf (Isle Dauphine reviews)
Being that I wrote the lyrics for this, the similarity is intentional No Google was used or abused in the writing of this song.fluffy wrote: Billy's Little Stinko - So is the similarity in the intro vocals between this and Roymond's intentional? Or did you both get the same weirdness from a Google search? Nice and energetic, but I have trouble understanding the vocals most of the time.
I also want to vote for Roymond but he didn't enter. WTF?
I didn't enter the live fight version because I didn't have my recording in time (?) as I was in a training class all week and things were too busy to do anything with your awesome recording (thanks!), BUT most of all...this version rocks!
So, a vote for BLT is a vote for roymond!
