Is there an easy way to figure out what the optional challenge was for the fight that happened, say, fifteen years ago ("ABCD Puppies", at the moment)? Or five weeks ago?
Anyway, it might be nice to record it for posterity somewhere near the album art.

Nope. The way songfight.org works is that the optional challenges disappear into the ether.
However, they get saved on the Jukebox. I think also at one point some folks helped me backfill optional challenges for long ago fights so the Jukebox should also have some of the challenges from the days before the Jukebox.
But I don't know if there is an easy way to browse the optional challenges on the Jukebox, you may have to just click through each fight. :/

Yes, that's legit. That was for a set of titles that went up together which were call backs to titles from the very early days, and in those early fights those were the requirements for the mp3s. For example:
