latency issues

so, i pointed out my one real issue with Kristal over in this forum. i then poked around the 'net and found out i probably have a problem called "latency", where playback and recording are out of sync b/c of computer lag.

this is a bit of a pain in the ass. does anyone have some good advice for reducing or eliminating it?

i found a decent web-page about it. i followed the advice therein, downloaded and installed ASIO4ALL, but i don't seem to be able to get my computer to recognize this driver over my stock soundcard. the manual for it is confusing.

so, yeah, any suggestions?

I get no latency on my old mac G3, but a lot on my pc.
It has to do with HD speed (for audio recording you need a 7200rpm HD, not a bulk standard slower one) + bus speed + soundcard capabilities...

Though I could well be wrong...

what's your soundcard? it might be worthwhile upgrading to one that has native asio drivers.
i have never tried asio4all, but many on the audiomulch list have and have shared some tips. try checking the boards for the list:

...and do a search for asio4all (it might go back some months or so before you find hits). you might find some useful information. i think it can be flaky.

i have a SoundMax card (i think; i'm writing from work.) however, developments: while i still can't get an ASIO4ALL listing on my device manager, Kristal has finally recognized it, so that should be all that counts and i can control latency pretty easily from ASIO4ALL interface. still have to give it a good test-run and i'll run through through that list there. thanks.

and yeah, from time to time i've seriously considered getting a MAC as my next laptop, but that's still a ways down the road. my wife gets a new computer first and she's a windows girl.

cpu aside, try allocating less memory to the recording software you use (or a smaller playback buffer in the preferences). most sequencers actually use very little memory (outside of plugins), and the computer itself deals with the task of replaying audio.

no problem, just be sure to up the buffer again to mix. let me know how it works out.
