Manilowfight! - submissions due 5/31

Post by jimtyrrell »

Barry's Back On Top!

Hey, there's been talk of a Manilowfight in the past. I know the Abba sidefight is still going (and I'm working on mine, I swear), but I want to test the water here. Anyone up for covering some Manilow in the near future? Or does the cheese stand alone?

EDIT: IT IS TIME.

MANILOWFIGHT:

Start date: Tuesday, May 2
Submissions Due: Wednesday, May 31

PM me with a link to your Barry cover. If you need a place to host your mp3, let me know.

Dude. Jesus. No. He hasn't even released an original song in like eighteen years. What the fuck are you thinking.

How contemporary is Abba's body of work? Is that really a requirement?

Abba didn't release six discs and counting of standards. Abba's work was almost uniformly original. I don't know, maybe I'd be surprised, but what I'd expect is people don't know Manilow past those six discs of standards, Copacabana, Mandy, and I Write the Songs (he didn't, of course, write that song, but I guess it's immaterial). I'm pretty disgusted at the thought, but I'll just go ahead and shut up from here on out whether there's demand or not.

i might have to do "mandy" just to include that ever-obnoxious gear change that everyone seems to hate so much.

octave harmony vocal gear change even.

you'll eat those words des. or maybe i should say sing them.

Seems all I ever do is covers these days but I would so totally be in for it.

You're lucky you didn't say that to Vice President Cheney, he's a big Manilow fan. Oh, and a fair shot at short distance apparently.

OMG, Barely Man-enough cover fight! I LOVE IT!

By the way, I HIGHLY recommend listening to 2AM Paradise Cafe, featuring duets with Mel Torme and Sarah Vaughn. I believe it was recorded in two live continuous sets (one set for each side of the vinyl). Beautiful Jazzy stuff.

Maybe I can find a song WITHOUT a key change in it!

New York City Rhythm, dudes. New York City Rhythm.
Or American Bandstand.

Also, would this coverfight include his medly of jingles he wrote: Stuck on the Bandaid Brand cuz the Bandaid's stuck on me; Have a Barrel of Fun (KFC), You deserve a break to day (McDonalds). OK, My oldest sister is a total BM fan, so I learned his stuff. (Do I hang my head in shame now?)

So yeah, anyway, it looks like there's enough interest to justify a Manilowfight. But not just now, I think. There's a pretty major sidefight about to start up, and this should probably wait.

It gives potential participants time to investigate Barry's significant catalog of material.

Stay tuned!

Good call jim, lots of fights goin' on now.

If this happens I'd like to do 'Could It Be Magic', though it's another artist where it could be any one out of 20 songs.

& didja know, 'Mandy' was originally written as 'Brandy' (& probably sang with a different name due to Looking Glass' #1 Hit 'Brandy (You're a Fine Girl))'

I knew a gal named Brandy. God, was she ever a little minx.

That said, I think this Manilowfight idea is terrible. I give a resounding two thumbs down.

Umm! I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but if and when this all happens then I would love to do Bermuda Triangle, 'though I may have to tangle with the lyrics some.

Sorry to barge in like this...
