I feel that I have been remiss in not giving back feedback . So many of you writers give generously of your time and opinions. I keep my paws under the bed always lurking, never participating. I have gotten so much good, bad, wise, ignorant, insightful, cruel, feed back. I must return the favor. I will try to be helpful. I won’t comment too much on production as this site is called songfight and production can be a matter of economics, not skill. I will try not to judge by genre preference but be influenced by craft, ingenuity, heart and courage, although sometimes it’s hard to sort out bravery from stupidity. I want to thank all those who have commented on my work, it is always helpfully painful and wonderfully deflating.

Thanks for the review! Reviews kick ass. I'll be doing mine this weekend.
As for the line in the last verse:
So just go on
And run your mouth like I was gone
You'll find it easy to pretend
'Cause I don't want to be your friend
The intent was to refer to the subject pretending I was gone, but I can see how the delivery might not have been too clear.

The rest...
Kill Me Sarah
+++ I love the weird little delay on the chunky guitar.
It makes it sound very "Ring of Fire". Cool story. Good
melody +++
/// Not entirely hip to the falsetto ///
--- A lot of the timing is still too loose. Sounds amateurish ---
Max The Cat
--- Where's the beat? Where's the 1? ---
+++ lyrics. delivery. voice +++
Melvin
+++ Oh wow, I love you bring everything in
behind the elementary melody. Beautiful
arrangement. +++
/// It could have built more (or better), but hard to argue ///
Merisan
+++ sweet. good harmonies so far. +++
--- The word "tighter" doesn't work. The 'er'
sound is naturally descending, so words that
end in 'er' should be used only in a descending
melody, or else it will usually come out out of
tune. ---
Produce (feat. Macher)
+++ funk +++
--- mix ---
/// rap ///
The Quesadilla Explosion
+++ Great track. Rockin' snare. +++
--- You don't sound very confident at
the outset. Oh that's why. You're stretching
out of your range in the chorus. ---
RattPoizon
+++ points for wreckdomness. +++
/// your voice is as good as the guy from
pigeonhed. Not a great a singer, but a band I
like anyways. ///
--- Ok this falsetto part is going on way too long. ---
+++ Secret Chiefs part +++
Sailor Matthew
/// The sun coming through the blinds makes a
cool reflection on my red guitar hanging on the wall ///
--- I only noticed that because your song was very
disinteresting. Hows abouts some emotion? I understand
it's supposed to be a melancholy song, but man when
most people are melancholy it's a dynamic state
somewhere between angry and apologetic, and often
bordering on sweet, too. Your delivery is none of
these. I can't make out a single word. ---
+++ except "fuck". I do know I like the chords, too.
This could probably be a very good song if it brought
me in +++
Screaming Poet
/// I don't even know what genre Creed was, but I'm not
qualified to review it. ///
slowRodeo
+++ Nice build-up of loops. Moody, with some funk.
/// Oh god, does this go on for five minutes? ///
--- Scanbar told me "yes." ---
/// I guess you're trying to go for something along
the lines of the instrumentals on "The Fragile". I
just think it needs more variation, faster. We have short
atttention. What? Spans. Oh sorry. Got distracted. ///
Smalltown Mike
+++ I'm almost tired of telling everyone how much
I enjoy hearing Mike sing. +++
--- I'm realizing the track really isn't that great. The
guitar, man. Are you rocking out? I can't tell. Sounds
too clean in the mix. It's a great tone, but it doesn't
match the way you're playing. ---
/// Less Valium for the backup singers? ///
Thanks For The Frisbee
+++ Double-tracked vocals compensate for
a lot. Doug martsch-ey. "feet touch down..." +++
/// Didn't really pick up as I had hoped,
but it wasn't disappointing. Just pleasantly
surprising. ///

I was inspired to write a song for this title, but not to finish it. I've got scratch tracks / rough outline for a song HERE in case anyone cares to check it out. I'll post a better version later... I hope to avail myself of a real piano / other instuments... etc...

I Don't Want To Be Your Friend
I guess my song came off political. I can kind of see why people would think that though. I'm not talking about politics. I'm talking about talking about politics.
If that makes sense at all.

Hey hey hey. If you guys don't mind, when you're doing your reviews, could you review the drums for Flvxxm Florvm? I did the drums and I kind of want some feedback on what was good and what wasn't, just so I can improve my recording skills.
EDIT: I just remembered ... Just so you guys know, I only had about 2 takes to get this song right ... we didn't have much time, and I basically learned the song first take, and recorded it second take. I'm not making excuses ... it's just so you know that I didn't put as much effort into the drums as I could have. Sorry Jeff.

That sucks. Well, I believe it.Ratt Poizon wrote:well that just sucks! I just spent almost 3 hours reviewing stuff (and drinking) only to lose everything when I clicked "submit." that took forever too.... oh well... maybe I'll do it again some other time. my opinion really shouldn't matter for most of the songs anyway
Couldn't believe that I had time to listen to all that today, but I did...decent. Didn't write anything down, but I did like;
Kill Me Sarah
Max the Cat
Smalltown Mike
and...looking up this damn name..Flvxxvm Florvm.
and If you don't agree, you can hate me now, but I won't stop now. Really liked what Max the Cat did, hope to see it again some time...Mike & Sarah, quality...and FF, I'm afraid the lyrics hit painfully, painfully home. Why did all the songs focus on upping a friend relationship to sex?! I mean all...thought more would be, angry or mellow or something, yknow...good night, all.

Actually, except for a couple of seconds at 1:15-1:16, this is pretty much the perfect drum track for this song.jolly roger wrote:Hey hey hey. I'm much more concerned about the lack of bass.

Doug Martsch is the mastermind behind Built to Spill and half of the Halo Benders (er, well, half of the vocals, that is.)Thanks For The Frisbee wrote:

A friend recently was saying to me "I'm so over Built to Spill." and I said, "I know what you mean, but I still love them."
"There's Nothing Wrong With Love" is a good entry-level album (with lots of double-tracked vocals.) Although my personal favorite is "Perfect From Now On."
Do check them out! They good!

"Ancient Melodies of the Future" is the best Built to Spill album, if only for the Sam Coomes contributions. I haven't heard the new one yet, though.

I'll try this again....
Cheap Bastards
I like this sort of stuff. Nice 'n creepy... I'd give it a 7
The Dangers
I really enjoyed this!!! are you the butthole surfers? because you could fool me. beautiful. I'd say you're lookin' at a 9 good job.
The Dark Side of Archeology
Derek Drinks his own pee. 10
Fish Sausage
I was enjoying until stupid offspring came on.... but that's ok I guess. Nice beats and stuff, really, but it seems to be lacking music on it. 5

I don't really like this. It could be the vocals or something. the drums don't sound too bad though. 3
Freddie Love
this is nice... I should have had you sing my song. I think it could use more drums... especially a nice ride tapping away would have made this better to me 6
Jim Tyrrell
nice rhythm. I love the percussion, could be louder though... back up singing is great. a sweet guitar solo would have scored you super bonus points. 6
Kill Me Sarah
Country huh? elementary school. haha. I'm really starting to hate the sound of the guitars. I can't really put my finger on it. its almost like I can hear the strum sound above the actual notes. I don't know. If you would have switched it up a bit more that would made it more enjoyable for me. 3
Max the cat
nothing seems to fit into place... but still does... I love that! ohhh yeah... that sweet 70's funk synth bass (if that's what it is). There really isn't many similarities, however this makes me want to listen to clarence carters' "strokin." well, you're just goin' off on some sexual inuendo's aren't ya? music was pretty cool. 8
Melvin
I don't really like this too much... however I'm not really into this style. production wise it's very good. 4
Merisan
I like the dual vocals... some really reverbed out drums would peak my interest. but it doesn't seem like you're going to do that. making me sleepy. 4
Produce
haha!!! I like the "cheesy-ness" of it. I don't like rap. However this is tolerable. music sounds good. endings kinda cool too. 6
quesadilla explosion
so far so good.... drums sound recorded very well, I don't think I care for the distortion on the guitar. I'm thinking if your vocals were distorted more it would make it more enjoyable to me. the chorus puts me off a bit.. a little too "pop" sounding I guess. other than that I like this song. 6
RattPoizon
I like how you turned your amp up to 11 to get that edge over everyone else. this is garbage. 11
Sailor Matt
guitar is nice. nice n' sweet. I'm smelling flowers in my head. oh no. the flowers are turning into permanent markers. I'm getting sick now. I would really enjoy this if you went somewhere else with it. I do like the guitars alot though. was a little sleepy and boring for me... but I supose that's what you were going for. 6
Screaming Poet
For some reason I was hoping this was going to be in the style of Pig Destroyer. So already I'm kinda bummed about that. wow!!! I think I hate the guitar sound... there's a chorus or something on it, maybe not... perhaps it's an electric with the acustic simulator effect... I dont' know.. I don't mean to dwell, but it's making me angry. some more instruments or percussion would have made me like this more... 3
Slow Rodeo
YES I am slowly banging my head. This is some fresh air. This is the sort of stuff that I think needs to transfer into some evil metal or something. ahh, instrumental. I like a good instrumental. this is pretty good. throw some metal in there next time. 7
Small town mike
not too bad. I'd say your guitar sound is right on. I don't like singing like this for extended periods of time. It's tolerable, however. overall not a bad song. 6.5
thanks for the frisbee
this is what I like to call "pussy" music. haha!! sorry, I'm teasin. I don't care for it too much though. I will admit I do like the little bending guitar riff here and there. this is definately not for me. I think you could definately use some more instruments. production is nice. 3

with the exception of 8) "the dangers" I thought alot of the songs would benefit from some type of solo. especially a vanhalen style with lots of divebombs and tapping. I think a fun optional challenge for next week should be to try to play eruption in the middle of your song.
especially if it's all acoustic.
