I actually played one of these for the first time ever last night; I've been wanting to for ages and I think it definitely delivered in terms of the physical interface. Although this unit is from the series with the whole sampler/sequencing hardware as well as the pads and it goes into a ridiculous amount of depth in terms of capacity and features, but I'm guessing it's similar to using the control pad in conjunction with another sampler or your computer.
I think that these units only really come into their own when used in live performance where they're perfect for recreating synthetic sounds/beats without a keyboard or computer. For studio use I would imagine they're a bit redundant as they require a bit of practice to become proficient at (using as an instrument) and it's easier to sequence and program music on computers (plus that way you only have to do it once
