Winners of songs - permission

Post by rowley »

congrats to all who have won Song fights in the past.
i have a little proposal which would promote song fight and your endeavours on this site.
I am a podcaster and would like to play the winners each week on my podcast at darkcompass.com
So i'm really asking for your permission to play - starting with last weeks winner The Seamus Collective for Ignorace is bliss.

Please feel free to shoot me down in flames if ou feel i'mm stepping over the mark, i just thought it would be cool, to let my listeners find out about you and songfight.
let me know what you think guys.

You know, I betcha most of us would like to have you play our stuff for all to hear, so I for one think your idea is a winner. I'm also sure just as many of us would want you to know that most of the time, "winning" is arbitrary. If you focus on the songs that get the most votes, you're going to miss some truly brilliant stuff (and perhaps some turkeys, although sticking with the popular vote doesn't always spare you from them, either). Just some input from a songfighter. As an alternative suggestion: Listen each week and play your favorites.

Of course, rule #1 is Do what you want, so yeah, man, you can play the S. Collective's "Ignorance Is Bliss". Thanks.
I'm late for the Winnie the Pooh convention.

I second Seamus's reply all the way, and I'm sure EVERYBODY ELSE will, too. Just don't forget about the other great songs on here. And check out the Sidefights, like the last weekend sidefight! Not everything gets voted on!

Are you really asking for permission? If so, here are my suggestions:

1) Keep a list of people who (perhaps by responded to this thread) have indicated that it is okay to use their music in your podcast.

or

2) Every week, send a message to the people (who are reachable via email or PM) whose songs you want to be in your podcast, telling them "Your songs are so awesome. Can I use it one a podcast? Please let me know."

If you are really just looking to get a general feel for whether most people would be okay with it instead of really getting anyone's (or rather, without getting everyone's permission), then I would still suggest the following:

3) Every week, send a message to the people (who are reachable via email or PM) whose songs you want to be in your podcast, telling them "Your song is so awesome that I have included it in my podcast. Please let me know if you have any problem with it."

People are weird, and someone might have a reason for not wanting a song to be included in your podcast. It would be cool if you prepared for that possibility.

Rowley - a few podcasters and radio hosts (Glenn Case, Marcus, myself, etc.) have created a thread for their shows here on the boards and simply updated it each time with the shows' playlists. That way people know not only if they were featured, but what company they were in. It helps give the flavor of your podcast.

I think that works best. I think the "Currently Digging" forum is most appropriate.

So I don't even understand what this is, but if you want to use my songs, go ahead. Or is this only for good music that wins fights?

Thanks for all your input guys, I'll take it on board. This post was to get the feel as I listen to all the songs when they are dropped onto the feed, I have my own personal favorites, but thought I'd go for the winners first.

There are so many of you that contribute to the weekly fights, I thought it would probably be difficult to track individuals down directly, hell, I don't even know if everyone has a membership on this forum who contributes.

I will contact people directly, once I get to know you all I'm sure everything will flow nicely.

For now, Seamus you song will be played on my show for Friday 22nd.

Thanks again,
Rowley.

Or for that matter, why would someone enter at all, if they didn't want their song to end up in places other than Song Fight itself? It's kinda inherent in the medium, isn't it?

Not neccessarily. Most people would agree with you, but ther might be people who don't want particular songs played, or have used a sample that they haven't cleared, or just despise the idea of being played on the radio. Not saying they're not nutters, but even nutters deserve to have their opinions heard.
