Dunno if this is the right place to ask,
What's the policy on swearing? I understand americans are more touchy about bad language, and a pretty offensive combination of f-bomb and jesus has found its way into the lyrics of our next song, wchich I don't want to remove unless it means I'll be banned from SF.

Swearing, heavens to betsy, no! Why would you even consider taking such a course of action! And leave our dear lord Jesus out of this!spinlock wrote:Dunno if this is the right place to ask,

sounds so slow now.
woulda been so much better if we had been allowed to use stereo back then. kinda sounds like a bunch of guys standing behind each other. heh.
i couldn't get the sound effect right for the guy fainting. sounds like a door slamming. but my impression of my mother is SPOT ON.

Too bad network TV doesn't allow most of these cuss words. This would have been a great Partridge Family song. I can see Danny Bonaduce tearing up the bass on this one.jb wrote: you could also have pointed him to this SONGFIGHT WINNER: http://www.songfight.org/music/top_draw ... drawer.mp3

plenty of time left to get into the collab forum, post raw tracks, and ask for help with drum programming or live drums.LML wrote:I made an entry all by my lonesome! And it's not electrocrap. I hate using royalty free drum beats, but ah whatever. I suck at drums. Anyway, I like it.

re: Get a Life
I have written over 45 songs, and this is the first one where after I was done recording it, I did not like it very much (yes, I know many you think all my songs suck so you probably won't think this one is any worse).
Yes, I know I have 4 more days to work on it, but I am leaving to go away for a week, plus I would rather just put the effort into creating a better song for the next fight.
On the plus side, this is the first Songfight song where I did not use a pre-made beat. I did not create the beat totally from scratch, but hardly anybody does that. I looped pieces of an existing beat (which I had licensed already) and moved parts around some to fit my lyrics. I also did some production changes (reverb, delay, overlaying) on the vocals for the chorus.
So, the question is do I submit it for this weeks fight and risk ruining my golden reputation, or do I scrap the song and maybe have it only appear on some "lost tracks" type CD once I am rich and famous? It seems like a waste to go through all the trouble of making a song, and then having nobody hear it, so I am leaning towards submitting it.

I wanted to try to do something on my lonesome this time. I don't really think it's shit, actually. The drums fit the song well in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with royalty free, as long as you're not just taking a "jingle" from garage band and singing to it. Either way, I'm pleased with it, hopefully others will like it too.blue wrote:plenty of time left to get into the collab forum, post raw tracks, and ask for help with drum programming or live drums.LML wrote:I made an entry all by my lonesome! Re: re: Get a Life
The fact of the matter is that tons of people write music—including beats—totally from scratch. It's really true. If you want to use existing beats, or chop up beats, go nuts. But you should know that tons of people make their own beats and music to go with the words they write. It's what people do.impulse wrote:I did not create the beat totally from scratch, but hardly anybody does that.
I think the general feeling at SF is that if you don't like your own song, don't submit it. Lots of people (myself included) have written SongFights that never got submitted because they weren't good enough. Just so you know.impulse wrote: It seems like a waste to go through all the trouble of making a song, and then having nobody hear it, so I am leaning towards submitting it.
Cheers.

Yeah, but I don't feel that it's bad to use a sample if you're able to use it in a creative way. Some people are just not GOOD at making their own drum beats. I understand the arguement for collaboration, but it's much more difficult to work with another person's individual music style than just finding a pre-existing beat you like and working around it. A Yamaha PSR-70 made the drum beat for my song, btw. After that, I've been messing around with the piano making my own beats, but I'm a LONG way from being able to make them usable in a song. So until then, it's royalty free for me. That won't last forever, once I update my hardware.

I don't really care if someone uses samples; it was mostly Impulse's "hardly anyone makes their own beats" line that I objected to.
I've said it before, but I guarantee you'll feel better about/prouder of the music you make if you actually make it yourself.
The argument for sampling is so often "but it's too hard for me to make my own beats" or "I'm not very good at making beats yet." That's not a good reason. You have to work at it—for years—to get good at it. That's what musicians do. It's too hard to collaborate with other musicians? That's what making music is about.LML wrote:Some people are just not GOOD at making their own drum beats.
