Well now I'm curious. What exactly makes this--the film with the most Oscar nominations this year--a gigantic bag of crap? Not that multiple-oscar-nominations means it's a good movie. Just look at Crash.

Terrible songs, mostly. Almost always performed WAY over the top. With lyrics apparently written by a 12-year-old. A dumb 12-year-old.

I'm not so good at actually reviewing a movie, but I guarantee you will hate this movie. I went to it with high hopes and wanted to leave 2/3 of the way through. The fact that everyone in the movie looks and acts exactly like a real person but has a different name is distracting. (When the Jackson 5 are introduced as the Campbell Connnection, I laughed out loud.) And then on top of that they they sing these songs that are sort of parodies of the real thing. (Can't remember the title of the Campbell Connection song, but it sounded just like ABC.)

But perhaps the worst thing for me was the slipping in and out of singing during the dialogue. I realize this is a "musical," but since it's about people who make music, it doesn't seem to work when they start singing their dialogue. And often, it's for no apparent reason while the person their talking to is still speaking normally!

I don't know--I hated every character and every song. In the end (spolier?), everyone finds redemption, everyone loves one another, a group hug would not have been out of the question. It's bad.
