I saw him a couple times, but missed these antics (from the NYTimes obit):

He also had a sense of humor that often cut through the sobriety of the concert atmosphere. He sometimes surprised his accompanists by pasting centerfolds from adult magazines into the scores from which they would be performing. At a concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Symphony, he dressed as Haydn, in a wig and livery, to conduct the “Toy” Symphony. And at the San Francisco Symphony’s 70th birthday tribute to Isaac Stern, he played “The Swan” movement from Saint-Saëns’s “Carnival of the Animals” attired in white tights, a ballet tutu, a swan-like headdress and red lipstick.

Sounds like I would've dug this guy.

Any suggested listening I should search out?

The Bach Cello Suites & the Dvorak Cello Concerto would be a good primer.

You really would have no reason to know him unless you were very into classical music or play the cello seriously. I would think very few people would recognize the name, frankly.

I thought everyone knew that the correct formation of that joke is "...and don't call me Frankly!".

Then why didn't you end your sentence with, "and don't call me Shirley"?
.....dang, I set you up for the spike and you missed it.

Well, although it's a bit clangy, I knew him personally like, through some work colleagues, and if it helps get over the loss, in real life he was a bit of a grumpy prima donna. Not disimiliar to me :) Although he certainly knew one end of the cello from the other, so to speak.
