50 songs in 90 days (Where is Glenn Case when you need him?)

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

50 songs in 90 days (Where is Glenn Case when you need him?)

Post by The Weakest Suit »

pardon me while I butt into your post.

‘A song normally has 3 parts: words, music, and performance.
Without music, it's a poem.
Without the words, it's an overture.
Without a performance, nobody will ever know about it anyway.’

~ Whiskey Jack Dave
(list owner of the original 50 Songs in 90 Days Challenge)

I think this group is interesting enough to warrant re-establishing the link:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/50songs90days/

The challenge is a little different from some of the others out there, in that you can post lyrics, music, or both as part of your response.

please continue with the usual nonsense...

I'll never understand this desire to bang out as many songs as possible in a short period of time. I know a ton of guys here seem to love it, so I'm not knocking it, I just don't get it.
But, I will say that I enjoy listening to the songs.

I don't have a big problem with writing a cd in a short time, but 50 songs seems a bit excessive. Maybe somebody else will go for it though.

its better to like what you write, quality is better than quanity.
my oppinion is that this is too many songs for one challenge.

EDIT: mean stuff

Yeah, people seem down on writing a whole bunch of songs really fast; I'm not sure why. Unless there is a severe time restriction, I think the quantity vs. quality argument is a false dilemma. That said, 50 is frankly insurmountable.

Dude,
Luke's 'Prayer for Pancakes' is like one of my favorite tunes to have come from this site. In fact, from anywhere. I think the severe time restriction really worked for him there.
Quality, thats what I say. Thats why after my initial excitment of finding this place, I seem to never fight. I cant get the songs 'finished' enough to consider them worthy.

That's exactly why I'm in the 'quantity' camp. For me, I gotta just get those ideas out past my internal censor, and see if there's anything there. In fact, when I found SF, I was suffering from what I liked to call writer's block. I was stymied by the idea that a song needed to be somehow complete and impressive before it was even written. Sounds silly, but that's the best explanation I can come up with.

Now (and thanks in large part to this site), I don't mind writing a bunch of songs that I consider 'bad'*, if I get one that I think is good. And usually, there's something to be gotten out of all of 'em.

All this said, I don't think I'll have time for this particular challenge this summer.

*Which is not to say that I make people listen to all the bad ones...

This past February I did the FAWM, RPM, AAD and 3 Songfight! entries for a total of 39 songs. Of those, I selected 11 for a "Best of February" collection CD, 5 or 6 of which were from the AAD. Some songs were alive with improvisation and some were mapped out stinkers. There is definitely something to be said both for and against the quantity factor but once the February whirlwind settled down, I was fried. Whatever pace works best for you, I reckon.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Of the thousand or so people who might be reading this, we've had maybe half a dozen say they weren't interested. Over-fucking-whelming. At least you left the basic information there for all the people who might care. Except for the part where you didn't actually do that.

Is there any way to restrict the "edit post" function to people who can pass an "I am not a whiny bitch" test?

I've never seen someone crumple like that in the face of such mild criticisms; that mean stuff Thanks For The Frisbee wrote must have been pretty mean.

That's a good point. Didn't mean to slag all the songs in that fight; I was more using Prayer For Pancakes' 30 minute time limit as an example of a really extreme time restriction.

Seriously, dude. Anyone who WAS into the challenge was probably too busy writing the 50 songs to bother posting here. Don't let the bastards get you down, man. Just because THEY aren't man enough to do it doesn't mean that the information wasn't useful to someone. For the sake of historical perspective, i have reposted the information.

Thanks,

i think i said something like, ' id rather take a year and write one good song than 50 piles of crap'... so it wasnt really that mean i dont think,

so then i realized that i write crappy songs all the time. thats one of the ways to improve i guess, but i personally dont want 45-50 of my worste songs on display...although there are some stinkers in the archive for sure. i can also see the percentages side of it.
write 50 songs..a couple MUST be good. its just not for me. sorry to have played a part in crushing your dreams man  somebody will do this!!

I'll write lyrics for 50 songs in 90 days (that's a cinch), if at least 10 bands agree to do them (5 songs each).

I might actually give this a shot.

This appeals to me for same reasons Albums-A-Day appeal to me.
Because its an intense creative process, with the purpose on creating not selling (not literally), and most important because it sounds like fun.

Every time I come up with a small guitar part, or idea for a song that i want to turn into a well polish structured song, tha can be enjoyed by someone else besides the performer (me), it then becomes more of a technical adventure, than a creative process. Can i find the right beat for this? What chord should go next? Are the levels to high/low?

Yes, i do agree that 95-99% would be complete crap, but there’s a merit in its self( somewhere once i find it, i'll post it here)

So much drama! Write songs and post them on the Internet. Or don't. Good idea/bad idea/silly idea/waste of time...yeah. All that.

But 50 songs in 90 days doesn't even seem that big a deal. A little less than two days per song? Or about 4 songs a week? We can do that. I'll bet the typical SongFighter would do it with grace, with a good-song rate over 25%. All this worry about all those crappy songs you'd have to write to make quota is bull. What's the good-song rate here in one-song-per-2-weeks land?

Given, of course, that SongFighter had 90 contiguous days with no long absences or work/family issues. We, alas, do not qualify. So maybe that's really the challenge: be a songwriter with all your shit together. That's a toughie.

Heh @ the title of this thread.

I am primarily working on the Half Racks CD at this point, but even if I wasn't, I am planning on staying away from the crazy deadline music projects for a while. In February, I failed to produce a complete FAWM, I failed to even really start on RPM, and I didn't get to my AAD. I also failed to complete a AAW when we did that.

That's a lot of acronyms.

I know the "create a crapload of songs in a small amount of time" bug will bite me when I get caught up on some of the projects I have looming on the calendar, but I'm busy enough right now without adding a project like this to what I am already sorely behind schedule on producing.

There, I said it. :)

ROCK!
