QOTD - My first band was a 3 piece with me on guitar, the Greek thunder on bass and vocal (through his bass cab!) and Bob on drums. This was 1981, I'm guessing. We did Sabbath covers and originals in the hard rock vein. Strangely enough, the Thunder ran into Bob a couple of years ago after not seeing him for almost 20 years, and we now all play together again. We are marginally improved in all that time, and recently added a keyboardist, but if you ever want a dose of moody psychedelic cave-man rock, give us a call.

First band: RPM. Drum machine pop. Learned a lot about writing songs by trial and error. My friend and I used to do a SongFight! type of game where one of us would write lyrics very quickly, hand it off to the other to write music very quickly and then record it right away. Then switch roles and do it again. And again.
And years later, after not having spoken for ages, he emailed me to tell me about this website that posts titles and you have a week to write a song...
Bonus: First live performance was RPM covering "Purple Rain" in the 7th grade talent show. I was terrified.

A beautiful day ahead
Hit the water early because it will be packed by 9:00am
It was nice, maybe a half dozen groms as far as the eye could see
I feel rejuvenated and ready for whatevah
QOTD:
We were a power trio and we did a lot of AC/DC, Sabbath and Zep. Billy and I would switch off on bass and guitar. Matt Was a Bonham fan, Billy was a Hendrex fan, I was into AC/DC. No one wanted to hear our original stuff, and all we played was house parties back then. But Billy and I were constantly writing and only our group of future musicians and friends would listen to our stuff. But we'd pop in something of ours every time we played a party. People didn't know what to think because we rocked it hard, but they never heard a band screaming into a mic before and window shattering guitar.
Great memories.

qotd: My first band was me and two of my friends sitting around in guitar class going, "Hey, let's start a band." "Yeah. What should our name be?" "I don't know." "I'll write the lyrics." "No, I'll write the lyrics." "I'll write the guitar riffs." "I'll write the guitar riffs too." "Here's a guitar riff." (Plays something really shitty and simple.) All: "Yeah! That's awesome!" Teacher: "You guys need to stop talking and focus more on your work for class."
Nothing ever came of it.

BLT: Where? Jealous, me.
Looking forward to a domestic day of getting Mrs. Rabid a cell phone, dismantling her apartment with various implements of destruction, yardwork in what passes for Portland sun and general loungitude at mi casa.
QOTD: A one-off band in high school called "Exhibit A". Wasn't a core member, they brought me in to bang on congas and other percussive toys. Highlight: rocking a cover of the extended version of Time Zone's "World Destruction".
Yes, it was the '80s, pompadour, lennon glasses, grey pinstriped suit, striped vans and all.

Today, I"m chillin. Coffee, breathables, listening to some buddies tracks that rip it up... feeling kinda good.
WE had a KILLER band practice last night... I've been obsessing with my guitar practice the past two weeks, only missed two days of practice, shortest one was 2 hours, longest is 6 and I'm averaging 4 hours a day. Man, there is so much I don't know about harmony, melody, chords!!!!
Driving me crazy!
And bending...man, that's a fuckin art, starting a riff on a bend that's actually in tune. But I'm having fun with it, while the dishes pile up, the studio is a freakin mess and I still haven't done my taxes (but I did find my accountant who was on vacation ... so that' ll get back on track, and since my last name starts in an "S" I usually get away with this (they go alphabetically...)
First band I was ever in was a fuckin blast. (Back to Front) Saved my highschool experience, and set me on the path I"m on now. Thehipcola was the lead singer and rhythm player. First recording studio experiences in that band. Played some fun shows, total teenage arrogance to boot. Good times.

"Groms"? Is that short for "Grommits"? I thought that word was only used in Australia!Billy's Little Trip wrote: maybe a half dozen groms as far as the eye could see
My first band was The Mess. (seen here 20 years later) We had no idea what we were doing. The whole idea behind the venture was to get as drunk as possible and try to impress the chicks. There are worse ambitions in life.

My first band was all the way back in Junior High school. There was a show called Smash Hits and they had a contest- enter a song and win a chance to record a song with KISS. So I put together a band. We had no idea about any musical fundamentals. The band had two names. It started off as The Young Stallions and later as The New Breed. When your band names are both references to pro-wrestling tag teams, you know things are in good shape. Sam did vocals. My part....well, I borrowed the neighbors bass, too bad I lacked the ability to play and an amp. But I also had a ! And Jason finished the trio on drums. A huge frickin' drumset. Here I was with a Kawasaki One Man Jam and Jason with a Lars Ulrich wet dream drum set that his dad would haul to my house and set up for rehearsals. And we had a roadie. Why? No clue. He didn't last. We made him wear a crash helmet. It was a crazy experience with crazy basement rehearsals that included throwing darts at posters on the war and making 'great' songs like "The Power of Horny". In the end, Sam moved away and everyone got tired of traveling all the way out to his new house. But at least I got my first experience songwriting (no I didn't write the Power of Horny). And no, we never entered the contest.

As a matter of fact, yes. Don't get all big headed, but 99% of the American surfers admire the Aussies and even the big tube riders of Hawaii get their style and lingo from the Aussies. The guy that taught me how to surf when I was about 12 was an Aussie, and still to this day is a surfing bud and great friend. My friends step brother that came here on vacation for Christmas and summer. He also brought me my first AC/DC album back when Evens was the singer, before anyone could even buy an AC/DC album in the States.Caravan Ray wrote:"Groms"? Is that short for "Grommits"? I hear that between the sharks and the coral reefs, surfing in OZ is serious shit. That must be why Australia turns out the best surfers in the world.
Anyway, we were a band to get into the High school parties and "hopefully" have an older girl touch our naughty area.

We were called Praetorius, and our first big song was called "Nosferatu." It was no black metal, but it was considered very dark and unsettling for a talent show in 7th grade or whenever. I hate being in bands, though, probably because of that one. The drummer told everyone I "sang like a pussy." He was a cocksucker.
My day was great, I ate pizza at work and listened to Matmos. Gotta love when the boss is out. Now I'm off to watch The Hitcher again. Rutger Hauer is dreamlike(fucking censors) as hell.

And I bet ya'll attempted at least one Beach Boys cover.Spud wrote:My first band was all of the guys in high school who were going out with this one chick. She was our lead singer. The drummer was my locker mate, and another one of her boyfriends, or course. That's how I met her. I played keyboard.
This is an interesting question. My first band was a punk rock and I was on bass. That band never played a show but practiced ALOT and yet still managed to suck. I would be the bass player for many reincarnations of that same punk rock band (that did play out) until I would graduate to a guitar. Eventually, I got into what I call my first REAL band. A band that practiced regularily on original material for the soul purpose of actually entertaining OTHER PEOPLE.
"Johny Spastic Rocket Man" later shortened to "Johnny Spaz" and later changed to "Raddichio". I played lead guitar and sang 2 out of every 10 songs. Kind of a progressive dark rock... we got compared to Blue Oyster Cult more than one time.
My current band, Ghost Town Gridlock broke up after our show last night. I was the lead singer and secondary guitar. We were, as you might have guessed, punk rock.
Working the overnight tonight. Suck. Almost over.
