In just under 10 hours I'll be having a phone interview for a very interesting job in another state. I'm not sure I want to move again but this job sounds cool and the company is big, stable, and decently-managed (much moreso than where I am right now).

QotD: What do you do for a living, and how long have you worked at your current job?

I'm a software engineer by day, and I've been at my current employer for just over two years.

I suppose I can answer that question with something I wrote today. I was asked to provide a "staff profile" for our office newsletter - so I "outed" myself and my alternate personality.

Reproduced here with the names of innocent companies and individuals removed:

John is Senior Environmental Design Officer on the ***** ***** Project, and has been with *** for just over 3 months. Prior to working with *** he was a dredging engineer with Queensland Transport. He has also been an EPA officer in Mount Isa, an alpaca farmer on the Gold Coast, a newspaper columnist for the Kiribati national newspaper 'Te Uekera' and various other things in various other places – some of which were related to engineering; environmental or otherwise. Husband to P_____ and father to 3 year-old H_____, his interests include curry. Winner of the ‘Best Gospel Performer’ award in the 2002 Mount Isa Star Search, John refuses to either confirm or deny rumours of any association with subversive and sexually ambiguous recording artist, Caravan Ray (http://www.triplejunearthed.net.au/caravanray).

I was a software engineering type up until about four years ago when I got laid off. Since then I've been back to school to get an AA (Audio Production) and a BA (Interdisciplinary Arts & Performance), but am no closer to rejoining the workforce. The whole idea and process of job hunting terrifies me to an irrational degree... the Mrs. is working as a teacher, but we've been dipping regularly into the retirement savings as well.

<- Preparing for being out of town for the weekend, my excuse for not having a song this week. Last day of work before 4 days off totally rocks. Especially since I know I don't have to plan anything for tomorrow, it's what I have to do today and that's it!

Speaking of...

QotD: What DON'T I do? My official title is Data Processor for a small-town (2.5 branches) Credit Union, but my job responsibilities involve all of the following:

System Administrator, Network Administrator, Desktop Administrator, sole IT department representative, Projects Manager, Client Relations, Third Party Vendor Relations, Purchasing, Supply Ordering/Inventory, Handiman, Tech Support, and (I feel like, most of the time) a babysitter for 'technologically slow' employees (read: all employees here). I've been here 2 years in a few weeks.

Pity me, please.

Got the recording setup in place last night. One song is done (I think), as I had tracks laid down on it already. Another just needs a new drum track. So, the ball is rolling. I'm kicking around an idea for the upcoming fight as well, but we'll see if there's time for it.

QotD: I am a graphic designer for a company in NH. 'Computer Printing Specialist' is probably more accurate. Most of the stuff I do comes in already designed, and just needs to be output. I've been here almost six years.
I'm a professional musician as well, playing as many shows as I can in the local (and not-so-local) area. My summer schedule can be found on my Myspace page.

My ID card claims that I am a "Business Data Analyst II," which strikes me an incredibly depressing and Dilbert-esque title. I prefer "Bean Counter." I've been working here for...oh my god is it four years now?? Jeez. I'm almost vested. I make a lot of spreadsheets and run lots of financial reports. I make budgets, and kindly request that people consider sticking to them. Other jobs I've had in the past 10 years:

-All-purpose office minion (many of those jobs!)
-Animator (More fun to do non-professionally, it seems)
-Animation Teacher (Fun, but exhausting)
-Set builder (Tons of fun, but inconsistent and low-paid)

I'm currently trying to decide what I actually want to be when I grow up. I hope to come up with an answer before I retire. The job I really want seems to already be filled by the cast of Mythbusters.

Hump day. Been pretty frikin' busy at work today. Work? well then:

qotd: I have two jobs. First, the full time job M-F 9-6pm. I work at a DSL company doing many various things that stem from a tech support base. I've been here for just a little over two months. It's a decent job but nothing spectacular. Decent wage for decent work.

My cool job is at Traffic Pulse or traffic.com We are responsible for real time traffic in many cities and of course I monitor with the Tampa crew. We have many contracts such as local CBS and NBC TV affiliates, COX and XM radio. Our biggest contract is with the FDOT ( 511tampabay.com ) and we even dispatch Road Rangers... system of trucks that help out on the highways. We listen to police, fire, and rescue scanners obtaining information as well as keeping up with city, county, and state agency websites. I've been there for about 6 months. I love the job, but the hours suck.

Print Monkey. I've stopped paying attention to the job titles, as the company I work for has changed them every 8 months for the past 4 years, each one more meaningless and empty than the last (although I rather enjoyed being a "Digital Specialist", giving people the bird with impunity... that title didn't last long in the corporate reimaging).

Been doing pre-press, computer & traditional, for the past 16-odd years at a variety of printers and service bureaus on the west coast.

Retail work never panned out for me, the two times I did that were catastrophic (Loma Prieta earthquake, and a christmastime plane accident through the roof of a mall directly above the well-populated Santa's Grotto--you Bay Area kids might remember these events). I can take a hint, retail gods...

Also hacked graphics and IT-type work for Disney Consumer Products down in Burbank for a while.

We look forward to your updated CV, Fluffy. Good luck!

I'm a consultant in media & entertainment. Mostly business and technology (process engineering, architecture design, implementation, testing, etc.). Currently working in broadcast TV, but I've designed a satellite distribution system for public radio, various digital asset management systems and digital imaging and prepress systems for publishing. Almost 8 years in the current consulting job.

The Bible says, "The wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23). Do you get a car with that too? Commuting must be hell.

Good to hear Fluff, hope you get it. Where will you relocate?

I'm in the swimming pool business. I started when I was in my late teens and started my own little pool service biz right after high school. The only reason I started my own company was to have a flexible schedule with school and my band, plus no boss telling to quit hanging out at the beach and get to work.
My business grew faster than I thought it would and after about 2 years, I had to hire a helper, my drummer, lol. We would surf in the morning, go to school, come home, go clean pools for a few hours, then gig at night. Twas the life.
The biz kept growing, so I quit school and built my company instead. My drummer continued working for me and going to school.
I later got into other areas of the pool business and got into design and construction.
That's what I do to this day and probably always will. I love the swimming pool business. Although still a small business, I now employ 14 people and we do everything from weekly maintenance and repair, to plumbing and electrical.
By the way, my old drummer got his degree in aeronautical engineering and we still get together several times a year to jam. I always tell him I put him through school. :P
