I saw on the net something about Art Song which is a form of self expression I love, and write, so I logged in. I don't know much else about this forum yet - but to Billy's Little Trip, Roymond and Embers of Autumn, thanks for the cheers. What's the fighting thing about? I could be a fish out of water ! As for what I like, any music that's real, especially where less is more (like cave art versus grand art - both have a voice which resonates! - economy of style) to birdsong. From the primitive to the passionate. If music is a manifestation of human spirit and that spirit is innately felt, I'm there. Another example: I hear an entire symphony in Jeff Buckley's song "Grace" - it's that expansive and if only the gentle are ever strong, his rendition of "Alleluia" is enough to move mountains. When Tony Bennett was once asked what makes a singer an artist, he replied : "It's what they leave out." I like that a lot! I think all music is period music one way or the other - most things in life would aspire to the condition of it.
By the way, "Embers of Autumn" is a fantastic name - it would make a great title for a piece of music - the colour of burnt ochre. Actually, "Song Fight" would be a great name for a sing-off between operatic divas!!

And since no one seems to have filled you in yet about what Songfight is...

Basically, every 7-10 days a title and a due date are put up on songfight.org. You have until that due date to write and record a song with that title. The song has to connect to the title, but you can be a little liberal with your meaning. Then the songs go up on the front page(with accompanying artwork which anyone can submit) and people listen to them and vote for their favourite. Usually there are reviews here on the forums. The winner(announced when the next batch of songs for the next title go up) gets nothing but bragging rights.

That there is Songfight.

Thank you Bjam for explaining Songfight to me. Wow - that all sounds enterprising and very much a challenge. Nice to know such a thing exists.
And thank you Jolly Roger for the generous sentiment about "Nocturne". Yes, I've been really fortunate with reviews. In truth I've no idea how my music sounds to others since I can't hear it for the first time, being mine, but it's always nice to know I reach folk out there - and even if I don't, any reaction is a good reaction, be it good, bad or indifferent. For me, I think the thing to do is to keep moving forward and not to compete against anyone except myself - in that, each new piece I write is really the first piece, if that makes sense. The journey is always within and I've come to learn that the greatest terrain in human existence is where one's soul resides. Cripes - that's heavy!!!

Anyway, you folk have all been very kind in welcoming me to this forum, so thank you all for that. Cheers for now.....

If you click on the Song Fight! logo at the top left, you'll go to the main page, from which you can check out the music archives. Many a day can be lost in there, so be careful.

Thanks everyone. I'm not savvy with computers - can't make head or tail of the Idiot's Guide - I don't even own one. I use my brother's laptop when it's here, other than that I go to the library. I'm a bit of a bubble boy at heart! Noddy ain't got nothin' on me!! I write my music using a pencil and some manuscript paper - I can't find a good quill anywhere these days! I'm out of my era! But that's OK. Hmm - I doubt I'll take up the challenge to fight, but I enjoy tapping into what makes other folk tick - so if it's OK with everyone, I'd like to keep in touch. I like to learn about how other folk do what they do....

Oh, by the way, Luke and Billy's Little Trip - if you haven't heard them, check out Jeff Buckley's renditions of Piaf songs. I think that's why Buckley was big in France - France recognized the chanteuse (can't spell it!!) in him. I gave my disc away so I can't check them for you - but there were two songs and I think one was Hymne a L' Amour (I still can't spell!!) - the disc featured just Jeff Buckley and a guitarist - can't remember his name. Someone here will know - you probably know anyway. The phrase shapes were kind of dispersed in much the same way Dali dispersed the image of Vermeer's "Lacemaker" to make it something else, less or more...

Just thought of a great movie I once saw called "The Legend of 1900" which might interest you too - I think that's it - about a pianist who grew up on a cruise ship - search it out!

So, do most folk here write their songs having the words first ??
