Konichiwa songfighters! Roll Call!

This weekend has been a very long one for me. Sunday especially as my wife and the kinderlings have been feeling the strain of missing our pet hamster (after his passing from cancer), so we went all the way out to NYC to go get a new furry animal from a hamster rescue out there. We ended up with an energetic pair of gerbils. Good stuff and the family seems happy and it feels good to help animals in need. But damn all these trips into NY are wearing me the fuck out. Working in NY and going into NY on my days off has left me tuckered out.

Work on Septemberian has been going full throttle. I spent a large chunk of the weekend typing up the story. Usually, I deal with the story in college ruled composition notebooks. But this weekend was typing it all out and damn, that was a laborious chore. I wish I had someone to take dictation. Oh well. I'm still heavily considering doing my novel as a podio-book. It may ensure that I can get the material out when I want them. I wonder about the whole character voicing thing but it's better than me and my hunt and peck typing style. It may be a fast hunt and peck but it can be hard focusing on the written page and then getting the typing into a flow. My flow ends up very staccato.

Question of the Day:
Do you consider yourself knowledgable when it comes to Songfight history? And if not, what aspects do you think you'd want to/ need to know more about?

If you have ever seen the Songfight group on Facebook, then you know that Glenn Case gave me the honorary title of Songfight Historian. I feel like I owe alot to this community as it has helped me so much when it comes to my music. So in turn, I have always stayed very involved in it. And one aspect of my involvement has been my interest in knowing the stories that go along with SF and the music. I always feel a little sad when I hear new people say that they haven't gotten a chance to hear much more SF stuff than the stuff they came in to. There is so much great music in SF. All the way back in 2000, SF had already begun churning out great stuff (Have you ever heard Kissing Contest's "...Cotton Wool"? That's a great tune). And over the years so many spectacular bands have graced this place. Going through the archive is an awesome experience.

So do you guys delve back into the archives? Do you like finding out background history to the music at SF?

New IKEA catalogs are out, but not at the stores? WTFIKEA

QOTD: I dunno, so much of the history of songfight is specifically written in threads on dead messagebaords that on some level it becomes impossible for any new person to learn about how pissed people were about that one song that Amsmspsptk had, or how some people managed to not hear the racism of "On My Block" by dub, or how some people thought that "Dinner for One" by You Pour a Pearl wasn't really appropriate for songfight, or that one song which, for no reason, basically just described me having sex with dudes, or how 80% of SF used to be Colin and drew and their friends. To me, those stories are the real history of songfight, and it's kind of hard now to dig them up to learn about them.

Looks like tonight's plans to BBQ on the beach are rained out. Just as well, 'cause I've got a bunch of work to do to get ready for the Weird Al show this Friday.

CD sales were surprisingly brisk over the weekend. Just having the thing there on stage makes people much more interested in (and receptive to) my originals. Maybe someday I will free myself from the Margaritaville shackles once and for all, hmm?

QotD: Funny you should mention that, erik, 'cause I just recently followed a link someone put up somewhere in here, and read all about the On My Block business. Don't ask me how I got there though.
I am keenly interested in SF History. Anyone got any helpful links to boards from days past?

Very true. Is there a way we can help to perserve songfight history and convey it to the newcomers?

In other news- I just found the librivox website and I'm very happy as I listen to the audiobook version of Bram Stoker's "Lair of the White Worm".

Or the legendary hook ups on songfight. (I can think of at least two of historic value)

Spud, JBB, ADD, FBF, Eric, Niveous, Fluffy, RxW, MCFRONTALOT, etc.. (DREW?)(and whomever else...)... we should all write a songfight history page... or update the wiki and link it, or link wiki to IT.

I mean, I came a year after it started but I have a lot on the 4 or so years from there. (as to say that I don't feel knowledgeable enough to write about the last 2 or so)

------------

Hungry again, got some banking to do today... and I'm gonna search hotels later and book one in the ATL.

The boards themselves no longer exist, although the wayback machine or similar could get you a few things. however, the sheer volume of the board posts would be a daunting task. just think of how many posts we do in a day - now multiply that by 365 * 5 or however many years it's been!

Maybe we can do a set of interviews, kind of like a SF Behind the Music.

And maybe we should come up with lists of what we think is "essential songfight listening" so that a new listener has somethings to try out, because the archive is huge and it's easy to miss gems like Redcar, Brody, etc.

DRC: gone is the bitching about my job, here is the bitching about being bored in the lull between now and my next job starting. I really should work on something creative but I also feel like I need some time to recuperate.

QotD: I been here longer than anyone else but I haven't really paid that much attention. Also there was a lot of "behind the scenes" sort of stuff between the Dumbrella crew which wasn't really visible to anyone else. drew made some posts about some of that stuff in his "tales of songfight history" threads but I'm pretty sure he only scratched the surface.

Unlike some people I don't actually pine for how things used to be. I guess I'm the only "old-timer" who actually LIKED the multi-title experiment and wish that would come back. Its "problems" (which I didn't really see as problems) were much less severe than the problems of a single ginormous fight. I also like how we have a large nicely-categorized sprawling forum for all of our stuff rather than it being 30 visible threads of which only 3 are relevant, since there's way more to the Song Fight community than just the fights.

When I do think about the old days I can't help but feel like it was a completely different place (which is in many senses quite true), and this place is much much better. I don't get why people who haven't been around as long as I have are nostalgic for the Narbotic era and act like crusty old curmudgeons hoping the damn kids will get off of the lawn.

Oh, I never said I was nostalgic. Christ no. I liked the evolved Songfight. But I like looking at history as well. There are many interesting stories and good songs that can be touched upon and listened to when you look back. But the idea of going back....no way.

PS- I miss multi-titles too. (If one more person says that, it'll make J$ appear like Beetlejuice :))

What is so different about how things used to be? Isn't it like exactly the same now, but with different people?

Sure, no differences at all, except for user-submitted art, timely updates, a nice variety of title styles, a large community-oriented forum rather than a dusty crevasse at Dumbrella, a much stronger spirit of cooperation and community, a visible vote result, a decent well-maintained archive...

Yeah, this is how I feel. I don't necessarily look back as songfight 'used to be'... I just look back to a time where I was more active and I prioritized SF more in my life. It's my own fault that things are not the same TO ME ...not to the actual concept and life line of the site.

I keep my foot lodged in the door though. I want to come back strong. I may soon too. I'm back in a full time computer job with the freedom of the internet and only practicing in a band once a week. I still love Songfight...and the annual get together is a great excuse to visit new cities. (except this year I'm visiting my OLD CITY!)

That's pretty much what I meant. I've been around for 4 years now and I think things have gotten better. This is a much better forum then our old Dumbrella one. (I like being able to say tomato sandwich!) I think we've grown since then. JB & Spud, kudos to you for making SF a grand ol' place to be in.

Today was terrible :( I've been unwell all week, and then last night got really bad(I tried to come downstairs and thought I was being all stealthy, but, uh, woke up the entire house. Woo, way to have no depth perception when sick!) So we went to the ER at 4am. Got 4 huge bottles and 4 smaller-but-still-significantly-big bottles of blood taken for tests, and then a tasty IV full of fluid. I now have two lovely bandages on my arm thanks to my terrible veins. While getting discharged, the nurse told me when I came in my temperature was 101.7. Holy cow! It went down to 99.8 by the time we left, which is still kinda high, but not that bad.

The doctor called while I was sleeping and apparently I have mono, the kissing disease. Ooh la la! Which would be fine, if you know, I had actually gotten some kissing out of this. But no! I haven't kissed anyone in at least the last 6 weeks. Ugh. Such BS.

Anyway, I feel terrible and will probably continue to do so for a couple of days. Which sucks because I was meant to drop off cupcakes at people's houses today and go to the shore tomorrow. I did send my mum out for grapes and ice lollies. Woo!

QOTD: I know a bit more than some, a bit less than others. I was on the old boards for a year and a bit(I only started posting right as we changed to this board). Hanging about in the IRC back in the day and going to SFLs has increased my SF knowledge.

Dude, I didn't say there were no differences at all, I was just wondering what has happened that was so monumental that would make one think that returning to how things used to be would be unpleasant.

Now this is like the Songfight I knew. Meandering and pointless squabbles.

It's not worth parroting the same stuff as everyone else, so I will just say, I like the 'new' Songfight, and I like the thing that makes j$ appear. Also, like Hoblit, I haven't really had much to do with Songfight in a few years, but keep my foot wedged in the door.

Playing footsies with Hoblit, perhaps?

*cough*

I think I'm finally getting over throwing in the nur ein towel.

So...

I guess I'll see you tomorrow!

Oh, and, ok, also, I made the kids some instant mashed potatoes today w/ some cheddar cheese & ketchup & red+yelllow food coloring stirred in. It was very, very orange (Spencer's favorite color).

I broke my low E on my strat about 5 days ago.

I really wish I had some kind of power conditioner to kill the humbuzz I get recording in our house, which is made 3,000 times worse by having my speakers on.

And also: I know next to zero Songfight historys. But... the future looks good?

Muh.

Anyway, hey everybody.
