I decided to reject the seller's counteroffer on the condo. I think I'll just rent a place for a few months while I rebuild my savings and find something nicer.
QotD: How frequently do you move?
I seem to change my residence every two years or so, on average.

The open mic I was going to go to tonight got flooded
My Dad is going to NYC tomorrow for a business thing, so my brother and I are tagging along to take advantage of the free hotel/gas. We'll be there all Wednesday and Thursday till the early evening. We've done all the touristy things, and nothing on Broadway is grabbing me(or I already am seeing it later in the year), so I'm spending the day trying to find some cool things we haven't seen. At the moment I'm thinking the NBC studio/Radio City tour on Wednesday, and the Natural History Museum on Thursday.
QOTD: 1992, 1997, 2002, ...?! Next move will be 2008, killing the 5 year gap we've got going. I get really antsy after being somewhere for 5 years though. I'm super sick of this area and ready to move on. I predict I'll be like this for the rest of my life (Heck, the reason I'm choosing the career I'm going into is ease of movement. And the money.)

Happy Birthday, JB!
Today I'm workin', but I'm leaving early to take Andy to an eye appointment. Then I'm headed down to Hampton Beach to play at The Boardwalk Cafe.
QotD: We bought a house six or seven years ago (you'd think I'd remember), so I'm pretty settled in at this point. Until the kids get too big for it, I guess.

Happy B-day to JB!
I moved in 1977, to college in 1991, new room 1993, grad school 1995, to MD 1997, new place in MD 1999, bought house in 2002, been there since. For a while there I had the every-two-years thing going.

QotD: I don't undergo any nomadic tendencies on purpose, but I have moved twice in the last 4 years (albeit to one place and back to the first). My wife and I will probably move again in the next 2 years, but this one, barring any big events in life, will be for quite a while.

Happy Birthday JB!
And there is something to the 7 year thing. Every cell in the body is changed over a period of seven years. With it brings emotional, physical and mental changes. Some more extreme than others.
......you're listening KBLT. Next caller, you're on the air.
QOTD:
I move about every time I get evicted.
I TRY not to ever move. Could be because I was shuffled around a lot as a kid because of divorced parents. My Dad moved to Cali and my Mom stayed in Ohio. That was a bitch! I eventually gave up on the Craziness and stayed here in Cali. Since my wife and I married, it's been about every 5 to 7 years, mainly because of a growing family. I've been in my present house for 14 years and have built up some pretty good equity with a payoff not too far away, so now my need for change is outweighed by my economic comfort. Who would have ever thought that I'd care about such things?

They relocated to a north Georgia mountain log cabin home between Blue Ridge and Blairsville where they currently reside.
today: Verizon has broken switches... many phone calls ensued.

The first seven year cycle is the most important. It's the beginning of everything, the foundation upon which the later structure will be built. You moved twice in your first seven years of life. That's 2.33 moves. How often did you say that you move, Fluff?fluffy wrote:Happy birthday JB!
I don't think it does. While my family moved twice in my first 3 years, we never moved at all after that. My parents still live where they did when I was 3. I only started the every-other-year thing after I started college.

When I was growing up, we moved every two or three years, with big moves in 1961 (Los Angeles), 1964 (Las Vegas), 1969 (Bay Area). On my own, I moved to Berkeley (1976), Santa Clara (1982), and then Arizona (moved 1985, bought a house in 1986 that we're still in).
I can remember many times, during my vagabond years, thinking how cool it would be to live in one of those houses where you've been there for about thirty years and there's all sorts of forgotten stuff up in the attic that you don't even remember you have until it's time to move to the rest home
Sadly, we don't have an attic; plus I'm such an organization freak that pretty much everything I have is cataloged on the computer, in addition to (in some cases) existing in reality. So other than the occasional, "that's where that went to" moment, 22 years of collected crap is, thus far, just collected crap. Collected and catalog'd...

1978 - born in Tucson, AZ
1979 - moved to Thousand Oaks, CA
1981 - moved to Albuquerque, NM
1995 - went to college in Las Cruces, NM. First year: lived in dorm
1996 - second year: lived in apartment
1997 - third year: lived in a different apartment
1998 - fourth year: lived in a different apartment
1999 - graduated college, moved to Virginia for a job
2000 - moved back to Las Cruces, NM go to go grad school
2001 - bought my first home
2004 - couldn't find a decent job in Las Cruces, eventually moved back in with parents briefly before moving to NYC for a job
2005 - moved to Seattle for a job
2006 - bought my second home (silly me, thinking my job would get better or I'd be able to find something else in Seattle)
2007 - moving to San Francisco for a job (and lucked out with my house sale still turning a profit, though not breaking even vs. rent)
2008 - will probably buy my third home
So uh. I guess really I've moved close to once a year, except from 1981-1995 and 2001-2004.

I've now lived in Brisbane for almost 4 years (in 2 different houses) - but next week my wife has a job interview in Broome, in the far north-west of Western Australia. That would be an exciting move.

Hey y'all.
The last two days have been busy but have included some genuine gems. The gems have included teaching the kids about various different musical styles. And at the same time getting the girls to become Dresden Dolls fans. It was a win-win. The boys learned about the Stones, Beatles, and tons of others; while Charly & Salana added music I like to their playlists, ensuring happier days for me when they control the music in the home. Win-win.
QotD: 4 moves. Queens, NY to elsewhere in Queens, NY to Brooklyn, NY to New Brunswick, NJ to Highland Park, NJ.

When I was a kid: when my parents moved to college; when they split; when my brother was born (a few different places there); everytime my stepdad changed jobs ('87 when the Challenger blewup -- he worked at NASA; '90 with Martin Marietta layoffs; '94 with Lockheed Martin; and '95 when SEI came along); when I graduated high school in '98; in '99 when I upgraded my apartment so my fiancee could move in; and in 2000/2001 when I bought a trailer which sucks ass ("for the investment of not wasting money on rent"), but will soon be replaced with a home built on the land we have yet to purchase.
So, um, whenever it's time to move.
But seriously, we thought about moving to Seattle. However, after visiting 3 different times and staying a total of a month there, we realized the Cost of Living is so much higher, and I like my job with 30 to 35 hour weeks but excellent pay and my bills per month total around $350 to $400, so instead, we travel. Yippie!
Today... ugg. Last week our computer guru at work gave his notice, so (being that I'm #2 in charge out of 18 or so employees) I've been busting my ass making sure the replacement guy will be "well suited" to the task. I think he'll do good, but it'll be a while before he knows it with confidence. I'm just glad he knows PHP (a rare trait in my small town)!
Plus I have to train the #3 guy to really step up and fill my shoes while I'm gone to Amsterdam and I've only got 4 weeks to do it. Been working through lunch to type up directions (de-tailed instructions..press Ctrl+A, open Notepad by clicking Start and...), and generally just about working a 40 hour week! Hard work.
On top of those very important things, I have to closely manage around 8 of the employees while juggling my regular tasks which include preparing over 1000 eBay auction listings a week, answering dozens of emails, and so on and so forth into infinitum.
However, I have to say that this is way better than when I was working the jobs I now manage. When you're sitting there working assembly-line fashion hours on end...it's hard to keep from going insane...especially since there is NO music in our warehouse/office and no talking.
But it's all good... It's Been Real, It's Been Fun

QotD: My family moved around a bit when I was younger.
We moved from Sylmar, Ca to Seattle when I was 3
Moved from Seattle back to Sylmar, Ca when I was 8
Moved to a few different houses in Sylmar from ages 8-15.
We moved to Simi Valley, Ca at age 15 where I lived through high school and part of college.
At 21, I moved out on my own when I transferred to UC Santa Cruz. I lived in the basement of a creepy old house, then moved in with Phil to the tiny room he rented a few blocks away.
Moved with Phil to Minneapolis, MN at age 22
Moved with Phil to Simi Valley and spent a terrible 6 months with my parents at age 23
Moved with Phil to Northridge, Ca at age 24
We moved back to Minneapolis at age 27
Bought our house in Saint Paul, MN at age 31.
We've lived here for 2 years and will probably stay for at least another 5.
Tomorrow at work we're having our annual Registrar's Office picnic at Como Park. I signed up to bring a pasta salad, but I didn't want to bring a boring old pasta salad. So, I just spent two hours making a spinach and artichoke tortellini salad with lemon zest, sun dried tomatoes and roasted red peppers (among other things). It's delicious, but the recipe said that the prep time was only 8 minutes!?! How can that be? I know I'm a slow chopper, but still. It took me forever. I hope everyone likes it.
One bummer thing... We just found out today that Spencer's kindergarten doesn't actually start until Sept. 6th, but we were originally told Sept. 4th. I specifically took the 4th and 5th off work so I could be here for his first few days, to make sure he adjusts ok and stuff. Then I have to fly to Nebraska with Allison on the 6th (plane tickets already purchased by my grandma) for a wedding. Now I find out today that I won't actually be here for his first day of school. I'm totally upset.

I move only when necessary.
From birth till 21 at one house
Then to college for three years
Back home 6 months till...
18 months at camp work
1 year at other camp work
2 years - first job
2 years renting
since then in a house - 8 years
I've been lazing around playing Splinter Cell three - I'm a teacher with a few more weeks off. I spent 3 weeks working at a summer camp in case anyone noticed I wasn't around for a while.
