Konichiwa Songfighters! Roll Call!
I'm teaching computer classes all day with a brief respite in the middle to enjoy the sights and sounds of the San Gennaro festival in Little Italy.
Question of the Day:
Have you ever had luck looking for musicians using classified ads (web or otherwise)?

I met the bass player for Loyalty Day (David) through a singer that I met over Craig's List. Erin also knew him, which closed the Sam/Ken/Erin/David loop that helped make Loyalty Day happen.
I'm currently working with a new singer/songwriter/guitarist and her drummer, who I met through Craig's List. They're cool and the songs are pretty good, so I'm going to practice with them a while and see where it goes. The plan is for me to play lead guitar, but I'm currently playing bass, because it's apparently impossible to find bass players.
I've also had many less fruitful experiences with people met through Craig's List who were flakes or sucked or both. You've just got to churn through lots of situations that aren't going to work before you find one that does. Unless you're a drummer, or apparently a bass player, in which case you can play with whomever you like, I guess...

I've never tried to find a musician, although I occasionally considered answering somebody else's ad I have never actually done it.

One of the guys I jam with, the Greek Thunder, found a keyboard player (!) through I believe My Space Musicians classifieds - does that sound right? It was a good fit but he left after a couple of months. Too caveman-ish for him, I suppose. I've never written or responded to one otherwise, but look at the Craigslist ones occasionally.
Any updates on:
Jim Tyrrell's Variax guitar - how's that thing, anyway?
Jefff's electric drum kit - how's that thing, anyway?
How's that fella who sliced the nerves in his hand a year ago - that was bumming me out!
All the newborn babys fine?
That's all for now.

yawn.
qotd: yes.
I answered a craigslist ad for a lead singer. Didn't get the job. I think the guitarist, the fella who wrote their songs, wanted to lead sing. I think it was the other guys who wanted a lead singer...ultimately they decided, as a group that they were going to stick to a three piece.
GTG's founding member placed a myspace ad for a lead guitarist- Jay became our lead guitarist, later had to quit the band. I now work with Jay in HIS band The Funeral Dazies. He has also become a good friend.
I place another ad for another guitar player when Jay left. While we got a few bites, it was a girl who knew us who answered our ad. Apparently her b boyfriend was looking to join a band. Turned out he was a perfect fit. Later he would quit after a show along with the Bass player which would ultimately be the end of GTG.
Recently placed ad for my own availability. One guy with an acoustic guitar said 'lets see what happens' but then canceled at the last minute.

Variax update: it's not bad. The intonation was kind of weird, and I discovered that most of that is just me pressing the strings too hard. I've never played an electric, how am I supposed to know?
Anyway, now that I'm used to it, and now that I have one of those Pocket Pod thingies to plug it in to, you'll likely hear it on a SF entry before too long.
Baby update: Sean is 11 months old now! He's pulling himself up to standing, but can't quite walk yet. He doesn't sleep through the night, but neither does the four-year-old, usually.
QOTD: I haven't met musicians through the classifieds, but I've gotten some work from answering Craigslist ads. The Hampton Beach shows I played this summer were from a CL ad.

Interesting. I do play my acoustic as a work out. But how high are the frets? You should go play a Les Paul at guitar Center to see if you have the same issues.jimtyrrell wrote:Variax update: it's not bad. Hi!
QotD: I haven't personally, but Phil found a drummer once through some sort of an ad. His name was Frank. He pronounced Darth Maul "Darth Mold". He ran off with Phil's dad's drum chair from the 60's. He could only drum so-so. Years later he returned the drum chair. That was strange. The band didn't last long, but they (Phil on guitar / vocals, Phil's brother Tone on bass and Frank on drums) had a cool practice space. The band kind of dissolved when Frank took off with the drum chair only to re-surface years later... oh and our son was born. Frank - ha!
Work has been absolutely insane for me lately. The "management" team has thrown tons of work at me and they all want it done right away. They all keep changing their minds and all of them are telling me different things. Yep. So stupid busy.
Maybe Phil and I will have a chance to work on the next fight this weekend. That is unofficial, a mere hope at this point. If it becomes official, I'll post in the pre-fight thread. I love doing songs, so it would be the coolest if we could pull it off.

Odd. The first band I was in, Coathanger, had a similar experience with our drummer. Except it wasn't a stool, it was a cymbol. And it wasn't ours, it belonged to the guy who owned the practise space we hired. And he hasn't resurfaced. But the underlying message is there. Drummers are bastards.Heather. No song from us this weekend, but hopefully we'll be able to record more frequently in the near future. Our lives may be changing for the better soon.Heather. Redmon. wrote:Maybe Phil and I will have a chance to work on the next fight this weekend.
But, I'm sure nobody read my original post, so I have not idea why I'm quoting it.

No, Phil will be working out a way that he can work during the day again by designing stuff from home.
The night shift is killing him and our relationship and it sucks.
Hopefully his job will work with him to make this happen. Then we'll have a real schedule where we'll have dinner together and sleep in bed together and not waste the whole weekend trading naps. It will be great. Lets hope it happens. Tuesday is his meeting with the bosses.
