Oktober zehnt, zwei tausend und sieben 10/10/07
Today is a special day
for someone, somewhere
I hope they enjoy their day
It would be great if it's better than they expected
All bad past is forgotten, just for this day
New future troubles aren't thought of until tomorrow
A huge piece of the perfect cake
Drugs and alcohol aren't needed anymore
Their damages disappear as if never there
To feel love and know it's real
To hear only about the things they did right
Today is a special day
for someone, somewhere
I'm sure of it
Question Of The Day: Do you feel that you should be 100% honest when giving your opinion that could mean hurt feeling. Should you sugar coat it and not be brutally honest, or give your absolute feelings to someone if you can't stand their work? Do you give your opinions on the Internet the same as you would face to face?

Roll call: Tonight is the open mic at The Lucky Dog in Plymouth. I'm the host for the evening, which is kind of a weird gig, since I'm the musician who ends up playing the LEAST. On a good night, that is. I just usher the acts on and off stage, and make sure everyone gets time to play, and tell the drunk guy who shows up at 11:45 that there are no time slots left. It's still the best job I can imagine having.
QotD: I strive to be as honest and straight-forward as possible. That said, there are times when honest input would not be constructive. HOWEVER: this does not mean that dishonest input is necessarily a favorable option. Short answer: it's situational.

I had to wake up incredibly early today. I am exhausted. I just found out all the shit I had due for Spanish on Friday (and the test) has been pushed back to Monday. this is incredibly good news. I can actually get some sleep tonight/tomorrow.
qotd: This is a very old discussion here. Be honest and direct, but don't be an asshole. Receiving compliments or encouragement can motivate someone to keep doing whatever it is, music, writing, etc.

and what's wrong with just being honest? why must you be brutal about your honesty? there's such a thing as tact:
"God, that dress makes you look fat. Are you stupid? What were you thinking?"
vs.
"Hey darlin', I hate to say it, but this dress really isn't very flattering on you. I like your green dress better, you look great in that one."

Roll Call is my third favorite forum on here. Most of us like it, I think. But it sounds like you're trying to kill roll call out of love, not spite and hate, so I'll let it slide. Oh, and on that Big Shots thread, you win. I'm an idiot. I forgot to get back to you. Anyway, it seems to me that Roll Call is probably becoming progressively less trafficked because SF, on the whole, is becoming less trafficked. Since I've been here, fights have been getting progressively smaller, and overall, crappier. Less songs, less reviews, less votes. But I know nothing about long-term trends, or what this would mean in that context. Anyway, roll call rocks ass, especially when BLT starts it, because I always get to express my love for tacos. He's probably starting to catch on to the idea that me and a lot of others will completely ignore his question, in favor of tacos. But it's no surprise. Tacos are a solid food.jb wrote:AS I SUSPECTED, ROLL CALL THREADS ARE BECOMING LESS AND LESS TRAFFICKED! I TOLD YOU ALL SO! I DID! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!
I'm pro-roll call, pro-tacos, and pro-tact, when I can manage it. Apparently, it's difficult to pull off on the internet.

Konichiwa Songfighters,
I'm playing receptionist and it hasn't been fun. Other than an abundance of really cute Asian women, it's been a drag. But it doesn't help that I'm horribly tired and would rather be at my desk listening to Pinoy Rock (Sheila and the Insects rocks).
Did I mention that I got new art from my artist for my novel Septemberian. Great stuff. I can't wait to show it off.
QotD:
I strive for honesty at all times. My life has gotten much better since I adopted that philosophy.

Like everything else, there are ebbs and flows. Last year at this time, Songfight was pulling in well over 100+ votes per fight. Lately, we are averaging about 70. But no one's giving up the ghost on the big fight. It may be the same with the roll call. Ebbs and flows. That and the QotD thing. I bet that more people would be apt to Roll Call if there wasn't a question that went along with it. The questions can be fun but occassionally, they're a chore.jb wrote:I told you so's and maniacal cackling

To a woman, all she hears is the first version, whist you spew forth the "tactful" version.jb wrote: "God, that dress makes you look fat. Are you stupid? What were you thinking?"

It's best to just eat something with lots of chewy caramel in it when confronted with this question and just keep holding up your index finger indicating just a moment while I finish chewing this delicious chewy caramel. Fifty fifty chance she will walk away to look at herself in the mirror, giving you ample time to sneak away and take the dog for a walk.

I think you're making the same point that I was trying to make, albeit more effectively than I was.Niveous wrote: Like everything else, there are ebbs and flows. As far as QOTD, I never got the idea that it was mandatory, and I don't think anyone else does. If I don't like the question, I'll skip that part, and post whatever I wanted to post. I think that without the QOTD, Roll Call would be boring, and its traffic would disappear. It seems that a lot of people show up just for the question, and ignore the "roll call" part of it. If you ask me, those two aspects of the roll call forum share a fairly co-dependent symbiotic relationship.
In conclusion, everybody do whatever the hell you want. Roll Call doesn't have any hard and fast rules.

We are musicians. And musicians like to talk about themselves. It's an inherent quality. So the Roll Call is a space to do it. There's no harm in having it around. So what if the numbers are down lately? Who cares.

I understood. It was humor. I just decided to reply to his honest statement because there was truth in that jest.erik wrote:I do. Others, not so much.Spud wrote:You understand that that is his response to the QOTD, right?

I agree with Niv that the QotD can be chore sometimes.Niveous wrote:Like everything else, there are ebbs and flows. Last year at this time, Songfight was pulling in well over 100+ votes per fight. I started that feature of the Roll Call, back when Roll Call was new and there was some opposition to it, to draw people in and keep them interested. Mainly to prove the nay-sayers wrong.
I was even coming up with the question on a lot of days, but then my question got called boring, so I stopped. I gave others a chance to make the question.
The questions became harder for me to answer, so I actually stopped posting in the Roll Call. And I was so Pro Roll Call at the beginning.
So, I still read the Roll Call everyday, but I rarely post any more because I don't have an answer to the question.
Maybe, now that the Roll Call is well established we could come up with some other daily attraction to draw people in for a while, and then go back to QotD?

First person* to post a picture they have taken gets to** tell a story about that picture. It can be a recent picture, or one from the past. Everyone else can relate tangential stories, or post pictures that are thematically related somehow.Heather. Ok, let's have more ideas!
*If you just let everyone post pictures, it becomes more of a picture dump and less of a conversation between board members.
** Yeah, yeah, I know anyone CAN post a picture, but anyone after the first poster CAN put forth a QotD and somehow people seem to abide by that guideline

QOTD:Let me give you my honest opinion of this question Chris....
no actually I usually try to be direct but am more than willing to ease of my level of honesty to protect feeling if I think it will be counter productive.
Busy busy. Breaking in new textbooks this year - so lesson planning is especially thick - speaking of which....

QOTD: I like to be honest, but soft enough that the truth isn't a total kick in the balls. If it's somebody I don't like, I can be pretty brutal. I'm usually about the same on the internet.
As for the poll - as I read it, I actually began to crave tacos. Thanks.
As for today - I finished up my The Dream of the Rood paper for Rep. Lit. Works. It really was a pain to finish, but I think I should at least pass.
Another frenzy has come and gone. Me and Lord of Oats are still pushing through - each with 4 consecutive entries. You should stop by and do some voting and reviewing. You can get to this week's frenzy (I'm Leaving This Place) HERE!!
