Have you considered soundfonts?

I'm really enjoying having Reason on my laptop. We used it as a drum machine for band practice the other day and I was able to load up a cello sample and play it in a song. It sounded great.

Are you after a general 'midi soft-synth' recommendation, or a 'general midi' soft-synth recommendation? 'Cos there's an important difference between the two.
For the former I'd suggest checking out either Kontakt or Reaktor depending on whether you're interested in something that sounds like real instruments (kontakt) or something more synthetic (Reaktor).
For the latter, I'd recommend checking out Bandstand
All of these are by Native Instruments, and no, I don't work for 'em!

I'll second the soundfont recommendation.
I currently use SONAR 6 and I use a lot of soundfonts. Did SONAR 5 come with a soundfont player? If not, there are ones available for free out on the net.
You can find many free sound fonts out on the net also. This is a good site for some.

If you look under the collections section you can find many that are organized in a GM format.
