I'd like to fight about whether pre-recording backing tracks before the title is announced is cheating or not.

not really - I just wanted to respond to this

Cigarettes, when lit, just happen to be the exact temperature required to release Polonium 210- the factor that actually causes cancer. On a funny note, I get more radiation from smoking a half pack a day than I am allowed to get working with Iridium 192.

I have thought about this hypothetical situation, though strickly in regards to a 'friend' and what 'they' may have done. Along the same lines...Say there were more than one title in a Songfight week (hey, just sayin'...) and you start writing music with one in mind, but then change (switcheroo) to the other mid-stream. Is that any different?

[edit]More specifically, the rough groove for my 501 came the morning of the title. I had time and was looking to write music. When the title arrived it fit the attitude that the song "needed" and I kept going with it. I see this is controversial but I'm willing to discuss.

Just to play devil's advocate, I'm going to say that pre recording tracks is about as moral as killing babies. I've got dozens of songs laying around lacking only vox, but I routinely refuse to use them, beacause it would defeat the purpose of a [week] deadline. One of the biggest things that separates the men from the boys is that there is very little time to work the craft, and fighters have to be quick, decisive, and resourceful. If a fight comes up and you have the whole week to work on just vocals and lyrics, doesn't that give you a bit of an edge?
I mean, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't freak out and spas if someone posted that they prerecorded, but it's kind of like friend flooding or farting in church- you probably won't go to hell for it, but you won't win any brownie points either.

Who was it who wrote a song utilizing all three of that week's titles, then submitted the same song three times? I think one of the titles was Danger Bus. Was it Max the Cat? (I know,I should just look it up...)

I don't recall that, but just last summer Caravan Ray and Tex Beaumont submitted the exact same song for both Nur Ein and for Songfight! (I think in songfight it was Sugar Shaker) but the song was clearly inspired by both titles.

When I made my post I actually was thinking of a post Dan-O made before the "Prayer for Pancakes" skirmish.

Yeah, Maxthecat, I was reviewing all three titles that week. It was pretty irritating.

Well, I didn't pick from "dozens of songs laying around", though I didn't let go of an idea that was fresh under my fingers. So, consider this my confession.

Yeah, I couldn't submit a pre-written song, even if I had one laying around. I do have a scratch-pad 'song' which contains a couple dozen riffs/ideas that I wouldn't hesitate to use, though. More have gone into the heap than have ever been plucked out, although that probably has more to do with their quality than anything else. Kind of a spice rack of poop. Or for poop. :)

I'm sure that people sumbit pre-recorded stuff all of the time, though, and if you can fit in lyrics and melody to the titles when they're posted, more power to ya. Shoehorn away.

I wasn't talking about pre-written songs. In my case it was a riff and my use of it when I got some time that weekend to produce it. I hadn't planned on fighting, since March was all fucked up for me, but the title brought it out. In any case I generally own up to mistakes and see his point and accept his criticism.
