June 15, 2008 - Fathers' Day

Post by jimtyrrell »

I was gonna start a new thread for today but I noticed we missed yesterday! Not wanting to let the holiday go by unnoticed, I've made a Fathers' Day thread. Go dads!

QotD: How was your Father's Day?

Mine was surprisingly fun. I mean, I knew it would be good. My boys made cards for me, and they got me Boom Blox for the Wii (awesome). But the surprise came last night, when this guy got up at the show to play guitar with us, and it turns out he's from Lynyrd Skynyrd! Holy crap was he good. They're playing at Meadowbrook on Wednesday night, and I guess a few of them got into town early 'cause it's Bike Week. He was a real nice guy, too.

Hey that's pretty cool, Jim. Did you ask him to play a Neil Young song with you? :)

My dad has been gone for eight years, but I thought of him all day. I even watched the final round of the U.S. Open for him. Well, maybe me too. What a finish!

That's really cool, Jim. If I was there, I would have yelled FREE BIRD!

QOTD: Fathers day was great. We just hung out and frolicked in the pool, listened to tunes, ate good food, played a couple great poker games, watched the movie Jumpers, etc.

Go Jim Go!

QOTD: Not bad, not bad at all. Caught up with my dad on the phone, lounged, realized I was technically a step-dad (he's 29, so it's not like I'm doing any real dadding), got inappropriately dressed and went to a punkabilly wedding reception (bona-fide business suit & shit-kickers). Enjoyed the open bar and saw a mess of people play interesting music.

Hey Jim, do you know which Skynyrd guitarist he was?

That's funny, I met one of the early guitarists for Skynyrd when I was about 15. Me and a friend had snuck in to see a Rush concert, and the band opening for them was a band I'd never heard of (Blackfoot). As we were hanging out watching the roadies set up, this guy came over and started shooting the shit with us. We thought he was a roadie so we were just trying to fit in and chatted him up. Then he told us he used to play for Skynyrd and we thought he was full of it. But he stuck to his story and said he was the singer and guitarist for the opening band. We still thought he was full of it. Until the show started and there he was front and center on stage. His name was Ricky Medlocke by the way. Nice guy.
