Are there any cool art websites?

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

Are there any cool art websites?

Post by Kill Me Sarah »

Okay, that's a very vague question, but what I mean is how would you finish these sentences:

music is to Song Fight! as art is to _____________
or
music is to fawm as art is to ________________
or
writing is to NaNoWriMo as art is to ______________

My wife is an artist and does really cool things, but like me, she is not always self-motivated to do her art, so I was wondering if there were any cool online communities and/or challenges out there that you guys are aware of that might jump-start her creativity.

One site that I think is REALLY cool is http://www.1000.com
You didn't say the type of art your wife is into, but they have many contests with all kinds of art styles.

I'm not an artist, although I play one on the Internet. :P
I love graphic art. I'm just a hack, but I really enjoy doing photoshop art. I like making pictures with shapes and shading to give depth and in the same picture use an unrealistic angle to the rest of the picture or two dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes and images together, etc....if that make sense. I've entered a few to the art section here, like this one. Andrew Reist made the little guy on this one. Or just with text and shape like this one. This one is to look like a flat floor and the word "weird" is mirrors, but you'll notice that I didn't reverse the letter reflecting from the seemingly vertical wall. That's part of my subtle genius, lol.

Photoshop art is to an artist what a remix DJ is to a musician.
....I suck at the analogie.

You sure that link is right BLT?

My wife is mainly a painter, and also likes to do some mixed-media collage type stuff.

You can see some of her drawings from our short-lived Story & Illustration-A-Day project.

Do they do contests for more "organic" forms of art? By that I mean, my baby don't do photoshop :)

Not sure. Does this one work. It says: Digital illustrations, real life sketches, line art, paintings or cartoons are acceptable.

I don't really do any serious art, but I've been messing around at www.drunkduck.com for a little while. It's mostly for comics, but some people do pretty artsy comics (I think one such artsy comic is called AHAB). From what I can tell, it might not be quite what you're looking for, but it's definitely a cool place to learn some new techniques and post what you're working on.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. So far deviantart is probably the one she would be most interested in. She probably won't be doing comics or Master Chief fan art anytime soon  Though we have talked about doing a children's book or even a graphic novel in the past. Actually, anyone read Ruse? She did actually really like that series for the art (though we haven't read it in years, is it still around?).

Yeah, I was going to say that deviantART is to art as NaNoWriMo is to writing...

(that is not supposed to be a favorable comparison)

(that said I do post some of my stuff to dA as well)

A lot of more serious artists are giving up on dA and switching to Flickr, which now allows non-photographic art as well.

I picked up a new tablet today (a Wacom of course) my older tablet was a total mess and couldn't work with Vista, so I figured it was time to buy a new one. From as far as I can tell, Wacom's tops when it comes to tablets - it has a great tutorial, solid features and hasn't glitched on me so far.

There's a topic every week, you do the art, you post it. Voila. More of a Songfight concept than dA(which seems to be more... somesongsy.)
Songfighter since back in the day.
