Because Calico's are a type of cat.
Funny story, when I was around 10, my sister had me running around helping her catch a stray cat. It was next to where she babysat. It was a calico persian kitten. We put up signs, etc, but we knew she was stray. So we had an exotic kitty. Puff was her name. We had her for around 15 years. Loved her. Miss her.

As BLT pointed out, Calico is a type of cat. However, one might tie in the word 'alley' with cats to. Here stateside, we typically call feral cats, alley cats.

But as Spud noted, this can obviously be about anything right up to psychedelic space in between tall buildings in a large city.

Not all Calico Cats are female. I'm not sure of the odds, but very rarely a male calico is born. They are usually born sterile, but being so rare they are worth quite a bit of money. Hey everyone, I know this isn't the intro section, but I'm new and just wanted to say hey, and put in my two cents worth. I hope to be contributing a song this week, I just need to find a new microphone.
My last one got destroyed by the cat. Lol.

I just googled - apparently we call them tortiseshell.

The term "tortoiseshell" (also called calimanco or clouded tiger in North America) is typically reserved for cats with brindled coats that have relatively little or no white markings. Those that are largely white with red and black patches (rather than a brindled aspect) are described as tortoiseshell-and-white (in the UK) or calico (in the United States).

Maverik and Fargo's sister was a calico but she just didn't pull through like the two guys. She had been named by the vet though. Tortoise. ( My song Sunny Again is written and dedicated to her very short life)
