[No Horse Town]

My kid started kindergarten today. Same school I went to for 3rd-5th grade. It's mostly the same... I guess it hasn't been that long. I think I recognized the librarian. Sophie's teacher seems really cool and down-to-earth. The school is obsessed with hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, which is good I suppose. It's Bandelier Elementary, which means the mascot is a "Banda-Bear", uh.... yeah. Seems like they've got a pretty swell music program compared to most public schools here. Lacking a car, I've gotta walk 15-20 minutes each way to drop her off and pick her up, so looks like I'll be losing some of this beer weight. Wow, this is one abomination of a paragraph, huh? Anyway, I'm stoked and optimistic. Sophie seemed pretty prepared and confident overall.

QOTD: What was the earliest school you attended that had a "school song", and do you remember the song? If you do, would you care to transcribe it here? I think it'd be nifty. Here's mine:

It's Bandelier Elementary,

Holy shit, that's the elementary school I went to! My district was assigned to Sandia Base but I was in the full-time gifted program, which meant going to Bandelier and being sequestered in the sped shacks.

I don't remember us having any sort of mascot or song at the time though. Actually I don't remember any school I went to having a song until college (NMSU), and while I know there was a song I never actually learned what it was.

Well, my high school (Highland) may have had one, but I never paid attention to that sort of thing. (Come to think of it, Bandelier could have had one too.)

Wow, it sure has changed since 1988. Now it's a "liberal arts" magnet school? What the hell? Looks like I wouldn't even recognize it if I saw it, either, what with all the remodeling.

Of course none of my teachers are still there, but that's unsurprising. Mrs. Fisk (2nd and 3rd grade) was ancient even back then, Mrs. Kreis (4th grade) was just there for the year that I had her (she was too awesome a teacher for that school to hold her), and Ms. Lazelle died of a brain tumor 10 years ago (and in retrospect she was probably affected severely by it even when I had her as a teacher).

I just remember sing a lot of hymns, because I went to a catholic school. Like:

I was never sent by any school to represent anyone in any sport. I might have had more of an interest (and a half a chance) if I had not been two years younger than my classmates, several inches shorter, and a bunch of pounds lighter.

The first time I actually enjoyed playing a sport was on the college newspaper's softball team. Also had my first beer there. Coincidence? I think not.

I may have this mentioned elsewhere on here - but I think softball is an extremely fine sport. It offers the older and more portly gentleman a chance to still play a team sport - but also have the opportunity to sit down and have a beer at regular intervals. I played it for a year in Mount Isa. As a participation sport - it is far superior to cricket.
