Complain about your schedule. Apparently people like that sort of thing.

November 6, 2008

Post by Spud »

A few months back we put on a show with Patrick Clayton (he says hi, btw). He brought two band from Vancouver and one from Paris, France. I brought Octothorpe and the Pathetic Wannabees, performing as two separate bands (we have been know to join forces in the past). The show opened with the PWs and Octothorpe played later in the evening. Mad Dog, while performing as John of the Pathetic Wannabees, made this remark at the end of the PW set:

"I also play the character know as 'Mad Dog' in the band Octothorpe, who are performing later, so I'll see you again in a bit"

This brings up my QOTD:

When you perform music, are you performing as yourself, or are you "playing a character", as described by Mad Dog above?

Wow, PC! I was wondering what he was up to. He kinda disappeared.

I'm pretty much an exaggerated, bombastic version of myself on stage. My stage mannerisms and banter draw very heavily from John Flansburgh, unsurprisingly.

Why does the name Patrick Clayton sound familiar?

QOTD: I've never played as a character, just myself as a band member. I guess I used to take myself too serious and thought characters and theatrics were for actors and entertainers. I used to considered myself a "musician" and I was always under the impression that I could "woo" the crowd with my "ingenious" and "never heard before" blend of "unique" music. Ha, what a dumb ass I was.
But I have thought about it from time to time. My earliest musical influence that I can think of is Alice Cooper. Kiss was my first concert, ever. I thought Spinal Tap was incredibly clever and fun. I go see Dread Zeppelin when ever they come to town, and now, White Gold is my rock hero. So I guess it's apparent that I've always had a love for theatrics.

Old-school songfighter. Probably still holds the record for most collaborated entries in one fight (Postcard).

Goddamn mechanics had my car all day, and I called them at 4 to find out what was up and they told me they didn't have time to get it on the lift, so how about tomorrow morning. Fucking weaksauce.

I'm sure I've come across his music in my time here. I've listened to every song ever listed on the SF front page "five years ago today" from it's conception, or since I've been a member, I forget which came first. Plus members will link up old songs from time to time when reminiscing. I'm always eager to hear the cream that has risen to the top.

drc: busy day

qotd: YES

Ghost Town Gridlock: I'm definitely my alter-ego. I'm a plain disgusting foul mouthed punk rocker. I go on stage with my balls in my hand.

The Funeral Dazies: I'm Major Dick D.K. at your service. Much like my GTG persona but dumbed down and zombied up.

Hoblit: I'm pretty much myself whenever I'm on a bill as 'Hoblit'. While always a rated R show, much more peaceful with the audience.

When on stage, I prefer my GTG persona though. Its an outlet for the pent up jerk I used to be.

I don't really have any characters as I'm definitely not comfortable on stage for that.
However I do have an alternate name; in Brainpipe I'm The Supreme Commander.
Also, when Suave Noise Youth existed I was Trilobite TK.

qotd: never performed music live.

I'm getting sick of saying that, but I don't have the balls to show people my music, much less play it for them.

I "play a character" from 9-5 on weekdays. Not a particularly good one. It's this middle-aged dude that wanders around with a "I'm trying to look interested, but I'm really not" look on his face.

Wow. You're gonna rock their socks off one day, and wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Surely there are girls aware of your hobby?

In Florida... bands don't get the girls. I'm currently writing a song about this. Not just about the girls, but the whole Florida package deal with being in bands. Its not anything like it's cracked up to be. NUTHIN'

Alas, I'm in college. I think there's two girls I know who have heard my music. And one's my sister.

EDIT: now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure my sister doesn't listen to my music.

Hey they figured out what's wrong with my car. It needs a new converter. It'll cost me about $700 and they can't do it until Monday. Anyone headed up to Dixville Notch this weekend? I'll totally pitch in for gas.
