So I was just listening to my favorite Canadian radio show, The Wingmen (www.bite.ca/radio) and at the end of the show they played Damien Rice's "The Professor". I had never heard the song before and though I like the composition, the lyrics left me screaming WTF. Some of the lines were smart, others boggled my mind to why he chose them, like:
Loving is fine if you have plenty of time
For walking on stilts at the edge of your mind
Loving is good if your dick's made of wood
And the dick left inside only half understood her
It's could be that I just don't get it. I'm perfectly fine with that. Or it could just be a whacked out lyrical choice.
QotD: What lyrical choices have made you say WTF?
Loving is fine if you have plenty of time

QotD: "Ellen and Ben" by The Dismemberment Plan. I love this song, but WTF?
A song about two people named Ellen and Ben (duh). A quick synopsis...
Verse 1, They meet.
Verse 2, They sleep together.
Verse 3, They are so deeply in love (and lust) that they alienate themselves from all of their friends.
(Also note that the narrator is one of the alienated friends)
Then, the bridge:
When I was ten I had this book of modern fighter planes with F-15s and MiGs
And headed for a brighter future with the Ocean City girls on the boardwalk
Singing oh oh oh oh oh oh yeah ye yah yah yah
Then verse 4 is about Ellen and Ben breaking up.
I suppose that it's supposed to symbolize something, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.

Ross is either trying to tell a 'Maths Teacher Joke', or he is using some southern hemisphere slang to tell us that he just got some action.

Sigh...what is the world coming to!?!?!?
In my day - nerds knew their place. They got a short, sharp wedgie and a swift clip around the lughole - and kept their nerdishness to themselves. None of this proclaiming holidays in the Washington Post malarcky!
I blame the internet....

speaking of your car site...
you probably would have enjoyed it here in Taranaki last weekend, this was on:
http://www.americarna.com/
Personally - it pissed me right off. Lots of stupid middle-aged knob-ends driving around making dicks of themselves. I plan on writing a very stern letter-to-the-editor suggesting that the organisers be lined up against a wall and shot like dogs.

I think its about how the narrator wanted to be more than friends with Ellen but he was too busy singing oh oh oh oh while Ben took some initiative and even though they really didn't get along when they met, he asked her out anyway and the narrator was jealous but now that they're breaking up, maybe he'll keep his eye on the prize, and instead of singing oh oh oh, he'll actually do something about his feelings instead of just show her his stupid airplane books like he did when they were 10.inevitableguy wrote:A song about two people named Ellen and Ben
As for the QotD, I can't think of any off hand, though there are plenty because I know I've had plenty of snarky one-sided conversations with songs, I just can't think of any right now. Vague ones keep coming to mind that have to do with me knowing too much about the singer singing them and thus breaking the suspension of disbelief but the only specific example is an ex with a song no one would know... oh, and some guy from an affluent family singing a song about growing up poor or something, but I don't remember who it was or what the song was actually about but I remember comments along those lines being made to a song.

Re: 3-3-09
By the way, do you ever watch Top Gear? It's a BBC automotive show, but they have fun with a number motor sports. The host is a guy named Jeremy Clarkson, and he's a crack up. They run episodes on Speed TV here in the states and they're always entertaining. Jeremy will always test drive the vehicle of the day, then they have an anonymous race car driver just known as "The Stig" to put the car through the true test. Then they give then their own rating on the big board.Caravan Ray wrote:speaking of your car site...

Anyway, Jay Leno was talking about his new toy, the Ariel Atom. I wanted more info, and it turns out that Top Gear did a piece on them. I really want one or at least just drive one. >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaWoo82z ... annel_page
