8-5-09 (The Sidefight Question)

Post by Niveous »

DRC: I want to learn how to be one of those people who can walk up to any person and strike up a conversation. I have been told that I'm outgoing and been razzed for the fact that I'm the "only person who could go to the hospital and come out with a gang of friends". But I wanna learn how to make that approach to a stranger.

QotD: The big fight is the star of Songfight, but there have been many co-stars in the past

What has been your favorite Sidefight?

Be specific. For instance, if you like the GOM, tell me your favorite GOM year.

Though I didn't participate*, I was rather fond of the Theme Song fight. Jim of Seattle's theme song for Starfinger was teriffic.

Also, Nur Ein. Participating in Nur Ein IV was an absolute blast.

Original Flavor Coverfights are always interesting, and I've walked away with two astounding covers of my work by some of Songfight's Finest.

My favorites, though, have got to be the random, sometimes unannounced, Hxaro entries. The outpouring of love, the thrill of the surprise, the flamboyance of the gesture of getting a whole bunch of people to record songs by one artist... To me, those really signify the amazing nature of what we've created around here.

*I sort of did one for Drew, who organized the whole thing, but I wasn't an official participant.

Yeah, I was gonna say, I have a certain fondness for Secret Santa's first lovefest...

Hmm...I sent a PM to Secret Santa. It's still sitting in my outbox, dated September 18, 2008. I had a suggestion for him. Guess Santa does not exist! Anyway, I have another idea for similar, if anyone wants to get something going, or take a whiff.

With fewer side fights to have experienced, I'll just point to my favorite Nur Ein! song, El Balazo by Ross Durand. Right about when I found Songfight! as well.

Yeah Hxaro is definitely the awesomest, simply because of how altrustic it all is. But songfight-song coverfights (especially Covermaster's Choice) and Themesong Fight are also way the hell up there.

I'd like to be more into Nur Ein (since everyone else is and that seems to be a common rallying point) but there's just so much stuff that it's hard to keep up with.

I love the Hxaros. Those have been great in the past. But when it comes to my absolute favorite sidefight, I have to go with Nur Ein II.

It started off with a phenomenal line up of 25. The first fight was Sister Cocaine and we were already struck dumb when Luke Henley dropped out at the get-go and Puce struck first blood. The second round brought even more shocks as Calfborg and BL/BR were out and Frankie Big Face edged out a victory. Then came the third round- "State of Emergency" and the guest appearances rocked including a killer performance by Smalltown Mike, the ringer-like appearance of Brad Sucks, the creation of the WSA and 4 eliminations (Reist, S. Durand, WreckdoM & Tyrrell) that knocked the whole fight on its ass. Then the judges thought they thrown the contestants for a loop by taking their guitars away. Instead they created some amazing songs, especially Merisan & Abominominous, who fought it out for the win. The fifth round would give them back their guitars and took everything else and we ended up with a solid final 4- Merisan, Abominominous, FBF and Puce. Then came the most unexpected twist of all as Abominominous shocked us all by dropping out. Merisan would fall victim to the 6 minute song challenge and that left the wily veteran vs. the talented Canadian. In the end Puce would pick up the well deserved win and FBF would gain the drive that would inspire his win 2 years later.

I love the Nur Ein.

The only sidefight I've been in was Gift of Music - but I had so much fun with it that I've been looking forward to the next one ever since.
