songfight on turntable.fm

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

This is pretty damn cool.

You know, one of the things I really like about Spin Tunes is the listening party. It might be fun to do with Song Fight, too and we could use this service to keep the competitive aspect of Song Fight.

...

Hrm... so this HAS to be social. You can't listen to a more than a preview of a song if you're the only DJ.

I couldn't find anyone to DJ when I set up there a while back, but I'd be keen on taking part in SF spinning. My name there is very similar to here and everywhere else.

Anyone want to set up a listening party for the fight? I know it would involve a little more proactive notification than Spud has been able to provide lately, but it might be a fun way to launch the next fight, if we get enough advance notification before the mp3s get posted.

I know Spin will probably be super-interested in this for his Spintunes listening parties, since the uStream he's been using has been buggy and laggy.

Wait, they don't have their own login system? It has to be through Facebook?

Not yet. Looks like (similar to Google+) it's still in testing/Beta. They're just piggy-backing on FB's log-in system for the moment.

Alright, provided that one of the things they plan on implementing is a non-Facebook-dependent login system, I'll definitely sign up once it's out of beta. Then listening parties!!!

I guess I'm not getting the listening parties. Why are they so good? And if they are so good, why doesn't the Mighty Song Fight have this?
Please explain in simple terms of beer and sex.
.....and sandwiches. Thank you.

Think of a room where a party is happening. There's a big 6-foot sandwich and everyone's got a piece, and they're all washing it down with beer. Someone in that room can put all the Songfight songs on, and then that music will drift out of the speakers and have sex with the ears of every person in the room. A Manhattan Glutton song could come on, and one of our sandwich-eating, beer-drinking partygoers could say "Whoa, that was a really sweet guitar riff!" And then you're standing next to him, so you swallow your last bite of sandwich and go "I dunno, I think MG is just a conceited guitar douche." And the two of you could talk about what you're hearing - AS THE SONG IS PLAYING. You're reacting in real time instead of posting reviews all at once to a board. This is criticism's equivalent to sex. Unfortunately, it can only be accomplished when you get a bunch of people who are all interested in hearing about the same music at the same time while eating the same beer and sandwiches.

Until now.

Now, through the magic of turntable.fm, you can be drinking a beer at your desk, surfing the web on your porn machine, and join the virtual equivalent of a room like that, filled with all sorts of people sitting at their desks, drinking completely different types of beer. Some of them might not be drinking beer at all! The important thing is that they're all interested in hearing the same music at the same time, and maybe talking about it as it's happening.

So if I say "Let's have a listening party, starting at 9pm Eastern," then everyone will join the room around that time, and I'll start playing through the Songfight entries for the week at that time. We all hear them at once and can all react to them in real time. It would add another level of interactivity to Songfight... in theory.

I hope those terms were simple enough. I threw a lot of beer and sandwiches in there, at least.

EDIT: Oh yeah! And the reason Songfight doesn't have listening parties (yet), is because turntable.fm is brand-new. As late as, like, two weeks ago, there was no convenient way to do what I've described.

Ok, you have my attention. :P

Wait! Is the music shaved or natural? I like it both ways, but given the choice, I prefer not to get reverb in my teeth. ........ :?

So......you freeze the beer into ice cubes? I don't like beer cubes. :?
Until now.

That's just sad. But whatever floats das booot.

Yes, perfectly clear, thank you. I wish you were my teacher growing up. Maybe I would have become a doctor, or maybe even a astronaut. :D

Well, let's talk timing for "Ruthless Lately." Here's a Doodle, please let every one know when you could (best) make a listening party :

http://www.doodle.com/kau74t7xi7ph8t26

Spud, I apologize if I'm being a little presumptive about a Thursday evening possibility. I figured I'd go for a wide span. The songs don't have to be posted to the homepage - in fact, it would be nice if we could have the party as a kind of special premiere before they go public. All we would need is the .MP3s.

I think the listening party sounds like a cool idea, but I wonder if we need to have a whole separate system for doing it? Unless I'm missing something, it seems like icecast + irc would do the job even better. Folks could use their own clients both for the chat and the stream and we wouldn't be tied to some crappy Web 2.0 site that requires a facebook account.
