I love great beginnings of songs. I was one of those guys that knew the beginning of hundreds of songs on guitar, but not the whole song, lol. So my party playing was a medley of great beginnings. Like I'd start with "stairway to heaven" then seamlessly flow to "free bird", then to "welcome to the jungles" and so on, lol.

Song beginnings that have always got me playing air instruments? Hmm.
I've always liked in the intro to "I send a message".

Of course "the Ocean" always gets me playing air guitar and drums...together! First the guitar riff, then when it breaks, the snare snaps, lol. I'm sure people look at me and think, OMG, he's got skillz, yo! :)

And who doesn't love the intro to "my Sharona"?

The opening to "cannonball"
http://youtu.be/7AsId-qVIb4

Simple, but when "seether" comes on, I'm playing muted chunk chunk chunk guitar.

I always get all dramatic feeling when I hear the intro to "lunatic fringe". Makes me want to do improvisational slow flowing dance moves like Gary Busey, even though I've never done that.

You know, I just realized I could go on forever, so I'll stop here and give someone else a chance before I use them all up. :)

Def Leppard have a lot of good intros, from "Gunter glieben glauchen globen" before Rock of Ages, to "If you've got love in your sights, watch out, love bites" before love bites.
Ken's Super Duper Band 'n Stuff - Berkeley Social Scene - Tiny Robots - Seamus Collective - Semolina Pilchards - Cutie Pies - Explino! - Bravo Bros. - 2 from 14 - and more!

i would just like to remind everyone that Ken eats kittens - blue lang

There're too many. But some classics are Communication Breakdown, You Really Got Me, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Iron Man...on and on they go. It is not always an easy thing to do, write something like that.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Don't all those songs just play the main riff of the song solo before the band joins in? This to me is one of the weakest intros you can have.

Boooooo! Get off the stage...
:D

With that said. Another song with, as Ken puts it, the weakest intro you can have".
Kashmir. I don't care what I'm doing or where I am, I absorb this song when comes on. Yeah, that's right, I said absorb. ;)

Who can't love Sweet Home Alabama? .....well, except maybe Mr. Young. lol

And when I hear the cash register start on "money", my brain always says, PLEASE let this be Floyd.

I've always loved the mellow intro to Come as You Are. The flanger is such a simple FX but so right at the right time.

Rock-n-roll ain't noise pollution. Not a big bang intro. But the tight room guitar opener sounds great. Makes me want to pick up my guitar every time I hear it.
http://youtu.be/5JWBmZTad2E

Of course I have to mention the intro that every beginner guitar player learns sitting on the corner of his bed with his tongue sticking out one side of his mouth for extreme concentration. Smoke On The Water.

Sweet Child of Mine has such a cool guitar opener. It always inspires my air guitar.
