2007 Songfight Inventory

Post by Ross »

As the year comes to a close I thought it would be interesting to look back at my year and see what I've done. Perhaps others would be interested in doing the same - so here is mine.

Ross Durand Songfight! Year-end inventory.

In official Fights - 21 songs. 19 as Ross Durand, 1 as half of Deux Freres, and 1 as half of Syd and Me. I didn’t win any fights, but my ”tw3erp” was the fightmasters pick for that fight.

I Was in Nur Ein! again and made it to the 4th round.

I played at the Live Event in Culver City - the first night of the west coast tour.

I was in two side fights. The first was the ukelele fight sponsored by Minty Handy, the title was “I’m Coming.” The second was one of JR’s frenzies called “Don’t Lie to me.” I guess technically I won that. :-)

I recorded a cover of “Spalding Gray is Missing” for the Secret Hxaro for Abominominous, etc....

I recorded “I am the Walrus” in the style of Bob Dylan for fun. It’s in Monkey Business under Who koo koo ka choo, or something like that.

I recorded an album for the AAW/WTF (Album in a week with twists for fun). You can find that link in my signature file.

So all together that’s 43 Songfight! related songs recorded this year, 41 I wrote or co-wrote.

How was your year?

Niveous Devilchild's 2007 inventory:

In some ways this has been a quiet year for me musically. In others, it has been super busy.

I didn't appear in the big fight until halfway into the year. I collaborated with Heuristics Inc as the Montserratian Secret Police in the "Ottoman" fight. I also did a little songwriting as I wrote BLT's "So Weird" and Take950's "Anamoly". And XTRG participated in the "Thank God for Memphis" fight. That was about the extent of my big fight year.

I ran Gift of Music (with help from Eddiebangs) and it was a good as it ever was. I participated with a cover of Les Tetes Raides' "Quest-ce Q'on S'Fait Chier".

I ran the annual Nur Ein and that was awesome.

I did a lot of songwriting for the FAWM. I wrote "Some Handsome Hands" and "Overexposed" for Plat. I wrote Glenn Case's "Psychopath". And I wrote 10 out of the 14 songs on the Zinkline "Bending the Worlds" album.

I started the Purple Reign Compilations (along with Glenn Case)

I started work on putting together the NY Songfight show.

I only released one new song during the year that wasn't related to SF in any fashion. It was a Zinkline throwaway called "Maybelline".

Silent E got together for a long weekend and recorded a handful of songs.

So, in closing, I didn't do a lot of music yet kept very busy in the music stuff. Here's to a very musical 2008.

I entered the "A Woman On Paper" fight with Tiny Robots.

I played four of the West Coast tour dates, in LA, SF, Berkeley, and Seattle, in Tiny Robots and Merisan.

Erin and I entered Nur Ein, and placed third. I'm really proud of how a few of those songs turned out. We wrote more original songs in those seven weeks than we had prior to Nur Ein, so that was great. Of course, we got so burnt out afterward we needed a seven month hiatus...

I joined a non-SongFight! band "in real life" and have been practicing with them for a while (http://www.myspace.com/lonaecho). We've got our first gigs coming up starting at the end of January.

I just managed to slip a Merisan song into a fight before year's end, for "Credible Threat", thanks to some great lyrics by 15-16 Puzzle and singing by Erin.

Still on my list of things to do some day: more Lunkhead entries, more Tiny Robots, more collaborations, and finish my GOM cover.

Teh fluffy inventory:

Four solo entries (tw3rp, baby be quiet, night terrors, and counting). Baby Be Quiet was my first SOLO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recorded some tracks with Octothorpe for 501 but they weren't used in the final track.

I helped out with BLT's Purple Reign track ("For You") doing synths and vocals and some general production advice and stuff, and we won that one.

Non-songfight-wise, I did the musical soundtracks for two ultra-short animations by my friend Pat, and also made my first (shitty) animation ever (and did sound for it, but not music).

Sadly this has been my most musically-productive year since 2004, when I did 5 Song Fight entries and a sidefight or two (I know I did Themesong Fight anyway). My peak year was 2001, when I did 12 Song Fight entries and a few Cover Fights. Arguably 2006 may have been more productive than 2004, though, as while I only did three solo entries that year I was also part of Octothorpe's most productive year since 2003, having taken part in 3 of their entries, making it 6 total, and also I did a bunch of remakes of my better 2001 entries.

Basically I suck.

Rone Rivendale's year end inventory.

Well I only did ONE solo song for SF this year. That was Night Terrors.

I did TWO songs with Posyden as Destruction Enterprise. Ran Away to Paris and Evil April.

No sidefights or live events.

Semi related to SF, last week I put out the re-debut of my 1st commerical album called Headphones. It's sold 2 copies in it's first week (as opposed to zero in a month the first time I put it out back in Jan.)

Not very eventful this year. I'll have to pick it up in 2008! ^_^
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D

1 songfight song.

A bajillion gigs, including the epic tour in Korea. Recorded many songs, wrote quite a few. It's quite refreshing to step away from songfight and write for myself. I do plan on stepping back in the ring soon enough, though.

One solo entry, and featured on keys in one song in the same fight. It seems possible, however, that these songs won't be posted on the site until after 2007 is already over.

My list for '06 was also embarrassingly short: three solo songs, no collabs.

I did play a lot of live gigs with my band at college in '06 and '07, though. That's valuable experience.

Here's to a very musical 2008, Songfight.

Frisbee and I went out in round 4 of Nur Ein II:

Let Me In Thank Glennny for the Frisbee
Sister Cocaine Thank Glennny for the Frisbee
Brownie Points Thank Glennny for the Frisbee
State of Emergency Thank Glennny for the Frisbee
No One Else Thank Glennny for the Frisbee

Played the California dates of the West Coast tour playing:

Bass for Minty Handy

Bass for Tiny Robots
Guitar & Vox for Zipline

Recorded the FAWM album with lyrical help from Niveous as Zinkline :

Leatherneck
Apple Valley PTA
Babylon

Sky is Falling
Stay Home
Submarine
Threshold
Xerox
Prom Night
Hot Peppers

When my son Django was born I convinced Minty Handy to write a G & U tune for hom and surprise my wife with it when she came home from the hospital.

So that's 16 + 5 + 13 (Get a Life served dual purpose FAWM and SF) = 34 new songs for the year I had a part in writing, plus the Minty Handy Django song I asked for.

i started in april with the "clause 5, sub-paragraph d)" fight and have written and submitted a song for every fight from that one forward. that's 23 songs.

i also participated in fawm last february and wrote 14 songs, but only recorded 7 due to illness and getting used to the machine i record on.

i also wrote a full Maki song that i couldn't record right at the time and recorded an alternate And Counting song that was much better than what i submitted, and a completely different My Darling Ruin song than the one i submitted. so 3 more songs there.

total for 2007 40 songs.
that's 40 more than i wrote in 2006.

I posted this list in the NY resolution thread - but I may as well join this masturbatorium as well:

OK - so the end of year wrap up is:

9 Songfight entries for Caravan Ray
01/09/07 A Woman On Paper
02/01/07 Convalescence
02/12/07 Get A Life
03/07/07 Couldn't Have Been Worse
04/23/07 Clause 5, Sub-Paragraph d)
06/06/07 The Sugar Shaker
07/12/07 Ottoman
07/27/07 So Weird
10/15/07 Baby, Be Quiet

1 Songfight entry for Caravan Ray and his Performing Loin Fruit
And Counting

6 Tex Beaumont songs for Nur Ein
Let Me In
Sister Cocaine
Brownie Points
No One Else
State Of Emergency
The Thing Most Easily Forgotten

2 Tuneflow entries for Caravan Ray
The Guy In The Mirror
One Foot Out The Door

1 Purple Reign entry for Caravan Ray
So Blue

7 songs on Album-A-Week - Nude Alien Euro-Disco for Vegans
by Caravan Ray

Dirty Secret
So Weird
Save A Pony From The Glue Factory
Andre Was Here At Midnight
Le Funkydisco
Sunglasses and a Smile
I Love You

That's a sub-total of 26 - subtract 3 because No One Else and Sugar Shaker were the same song, as were So Blue and One Foot Out The Door and So Weird appeared both in Songfight and on the AAW.

So, a total of 23 new songs for 2007!

Add to that:

2 Songfight entries for Lyricburglar (lyrics stolen from Spoons and MCEric B), as well as a Heuristics cover for the Total Request Coverfight and a Thomas Dolby cover version for Roymond in the GoM, which were effectively Lyricburglar efforts with all new music for existing lyrics, a Hell Yeahs hxaro, a Velvet Underground cover and a Bloc Party remix - I seem to have done a pretty good job in avoiding real work and family responsibilities this year!

Relatively quiet year for me ... in terms of what's out there, rather than what i started but didn't finish satisfactorily ...

1.14 songs for the Hoosenbergler FAWM album (currently offline) Feb

2.8 songs for SUK, though I did also bring bass and bv to the new Masters of Grip song. (March to December)

3.4 songs for my failed Album In A Week, Spacepub's 'Cupcake & The Chorister'. (July)

4.Part of XTRG's 'Thank God For Memphis' songfight (August)

5.2 cover versions, New York telephone Conversation for the Lou Reed coverfight (aug) and Run For Your Life for Glenn's Beatles requests thing. (Sep)

6.21 songs for the Tiny Paws of Fury's 'Devil's Bagpipes' double AAD October

7.2 songs for Purple Reign 1 (nov)

8.10 songs for Purple Reign 2 - there are actually 12 kicking around the internet, although of the 9 I wrote only 7 got 'released' and there are 3 I play on but I didn't write 'em. (dec)

9. 'I Want To Get On it' songfight (December)

So that's 63 songs made available in 2007, just over one a week. In the last two years I was averaging 2 - 2.5 songs a week. I had a typically busy creative period from August onwards, but I still can't believe I didn't make any music apart from SUK between March and July. I guess that must have been when I was failing to get the Hoosnbergler album finished (again) and not finishing up my 'Pink Chocolate Cabaret' album.

Man, I don't get how you guys can put out so much music and say that was a slow period for you. I'm ecstatic when I come up with more than one song in a month!

(I also need to get better about recording song ideas and then later finishing them. Most of my song ideas disappear into the ether, and the few I manage to sketch out notes for just sit on my hard drive until I forget about what made it so great.)

Alright, let's see.

Oh hey, I love the bold idea!

Right before I arrived here, I made an album-a-day, Start With a Shower. It had 6 songs.

I started with the "Thank God For Memphis" fight and have entered every week since. Counting the current fight, that's 12 songs.

Right after my first fight, I recorded 1 song, Ragfish Blues, for a project still in the works, tentatively called wikEPdia.

Starting with the "A Friendly Reminder" fight, a couple of other local goofs and I started a band called Blues Manufacturing Facility, simply to parody that Blues Train Blues Industry fellow. The thing kind of had a mind of it's own, and drifted into lo-fi blues-rock territory, and actually got some votes a couple of times. We submitted 7songs. We have not made any songs outside of SF. It is important to keep in mind our use of the "untrustworthy narrator" in our songs.

Also, in BMF's first fight, I made 1 song with Phil Wages, as Wages of Oats.

I wrote 8 songs for Andrew's 55-Minute Frenzies, 7 solo, one with Rock, Paper, Steve. To the best of my knowledge, my solo entries won once and tied for the win twice. The Rock, Paper, Steve song won by a unanimous vote. (I forgot to vote.)

I wrote two solo songs for SUK. The first one won. I also wrote, played on, and produced a song with the Knights of Griznacht. I acted as facilitator on another song of theirs that wasn't really a song. I'll count that as a total of3.

At some point, I made another AAD, The Epithetic Ferryman. It had 8songs.

I wrote 9 songs for the first Purple Reign Compilation, as Chopped Liver Meat God. I did another 4 for the next round, three as the Meat God, with help from Phil Wages on one of them, and another as Kick the Fat Kid, with Johnny Cashpoint.

I did 1 song with Rufus & Beauclerc for the short-lived LimboFight. If I'd have known then what I know now, it would have probably had a different name. It could come back, but the name would probably be different.

I did 2 songs for TuesdayFight! One of them was good and won. I also did 1 instrumental track for a EuroFrenzy. It wasn't great, but it's a song if I say it is.

I have quite a few other songs, but I'm not sure when I did them all. I'm pretty sure 2 of them were definitely 2007. A nice thing about SF is that it keeps track of when you did everything for you, so you don't have to.

Well, I think that's about it. If I've added correctly, that's 65. Not bad, I guess, considering I've only been really been actively songwriting since mid-August. Of course, I've also been involved in some top-secret projects, so the real number may be something closer to 81.

Yeah, but to be fair, those last two I mentioned weren't written during that time period. And they're not good or anything. I'm sure there were a couple more, actually, but you know, I guess it reinforces your point. As an artist, I take messing around very seriously. And look what SF has done for that. Let's say there were two other songs from beforehand, since there probably were. Then that's 0.5 songs per month for the first two thirds of the year. Then I discover SF and am somehow rocket-boosted into 20 songs per month. Whether you want to have deal with all my songs, whatever, but I think that really says some good things about this place.

Hey, I did nothing for Songfight.

I did, however, make two Møurning Brëth albums, and I started a band called Dickfist with friends.

I have been songfight lazy. I'd like to songfight again someday. I need a better place to record though.
